Default How to? Jersey city to Lancaster, PA avoiding most of NJ Tpike

I want to know if there's a way to get to Lancaster, PA from Jersey Cit without using much of the NJ turnpike. I went to Maryland last weekend and the NJ Tpike was a parking lot, both going and coming back. I don't want to do it again. Is there a better way?

Hmm to go to Lancaster I think the most direct route would be NJTP to PATP. You might be able to get around it by doing I78 West out into PA.

Take Rt. 1 South until you get to the Princeton area. Then take 95 South into PA, then Rt. 1 South to the PATP.

He asked for a way to do it without getting on the NJTP. . .he didn't ask for a faster way.

Besides. . .depending on the time you travel, traffic on Rt. 1 isn't bad once you get past the New Brunswick area.

NJTP was a crawl last weekend for me. Local roads would have been faster I bet.

I'd also consider 31 south and 206 south.

287 to 78 to 31 to 95 to 1 to PA TPK
287 to 206 to 95 to 1 to PA TPK1

31 seems to go a bit quicker for me these days. They added some new lanes recently. Both are much prettier rides than Rt 1.

Arrow Directions

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Lancaster and my folks still live there so here's my usual route...

-78W into PA ($0.75 toll at the bridge just after the border)
-Take Exit 49a (Trexlertown) for route 100S
-Go about a mile on 100s and make a right onto Schantz Rd (you'll see a sign for Reading) You'll turn right just after some railroad tracks at the traffic light
-Stay on Schantz road untill it ends ( a little over 3 mi), you'll come up to a stop sign at a "Y"
-Make a slight right onto rt 222 south. You'll be on 222 for a while, it will be one lane, then two, then back to one. When it opens up into 2 lanes the second time (about a mile after Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robins which was on your left) You'll want to take the ramp on the right for 222 towards Lancaster. Stay on this road and keep following signs for Lancaster.
-You'll pass a big shopping center with a Target and Marshalls on your right. Shorly after this you'll take a ramp on your right towards Lancaster 222/422. Just after you merge you should see a Best Buy on your right (just so you know that you're still on course).
-After a few miles the highway splits, you'll want to stay to the left, again towards Lancaster.
-The highway ends somewhere here and you're dropped into some construction, it's not bad, just continue on 222, after 5 miles or so it opens back up into 2 lanes again and stays 2 lanes all the way till it hits rt 30 in Lancaaster

Sorry most of PA doesn't have exit numbers and I don't know the exact distances, that's the reason for all the landmarks.

I haven't driven it for a couple months and there's some construction going on through Reading. Trust me though, it's definitely the quickest way to Lancaster, living in North Jersey now and having gone to college around Allentown I have done the trip hundreds times. It's not as confusing as it seems. If you have any questions shoot me an email or a PM. I may be able to find some distances and such when I get home from work. Just curious, what are you headed to Lancaster for?
