2002 WRX Engine Oil low by 2.75 Quarts
I'm an Idiot.
Got my oil changed by mechanic 2 months ago. Didn't check oil level. Coming to a stop at the bottom of a hill this AM, oil light blinks on and off. I turn the engine off immediately 'til light turns and then pull off the road. check oil, it's off the bottom of the scale!!! so I let it cool, then start her up. no Oil light. I drive 2 miles to auto parts store (no oil light) and have to put 2.75 quarts of oil in her. I think this is how I roached my turbo which made buzzsaw sound when not freshly warm and stopped boosting past .095 MPa (should go to .12) Would that kill the turbo? Do you think I damaged my engine? I'm a idiot. |

1. Didn't check oil level.
Not real smart - always check once a week or so (you have a turbo which spins at a gazillion rpm and uses an oil film as a bearing - bad things happen when the oil isn't there) 2. Coming to a stop at the bottom of a hill this AM, oil light blinks on and off. The oil light is for pressure, not level, so it coming on isn't necessarily all that bad - it's a warning light, not a "hey, you just killed your engine" light (which is a good thing!) 3. I think this is how I roached my turbo which made buzzsaw sound when not freshly warm and stopped boosting past .095 MPa (should go to .12) if you are running the stock turbo + boost control, 0.095MPa is pretty normal depending on the conditions. The buzzsaw sound can't be a good thing, though... 4. Would that kill the turbo? Well - it certainly could kill the turbo, and it's very possible you damaged the bearing/bushing, but the fact that it still makes boost is a good sign - it's not dead yet! 5. Do you think I damaged my engine? No - probably not - the turbo may have been damaged a bit, but it's more sensitive than the rest of the engine to changes in oil pressure - unfortunately, only time will tell... drive for a while and see how it behaves This is one of the reasons I maintain my cars myself, and always keep an eye on things like coolant and oil/trans fluid levels, tire pressure, etc. |
