Just returned from a a few hot laps in a Porsche 997 Cup car at Watkins Glen...
... as a passenger only, unfortunately. Man, I have to hand it to endurance racers, dealing with the heat, noise and vibration for hours on end. 5-6 laps of that as a passenger and I was ready to come in. For those familiar with the "bus stop", thought I was going to lose my cookies there.
Anyhow, what an amazing piece of machinery, very cool sequential gear box.

Probably way to much vibration to hold a cam steady while in the car.
I bet it was an awesome experience, hopefully someday I will get to experience it. |

I envy you.
I got to ride in a 997 GT3 around the Nuringburg Ring, it was simply awesome |

Ha, no pics. Right hand was on the roll bar, left on the crotch strap of the 5-point harness
In the garage, the car parked was next to a stock GT3 (a desireable car in its own right); it was interesting to note the differences, a Cup car being loosely based on a GT3 (correct me if I'm wrong). Brakes were incredible once warmed up. The car is owned/driven by a retired GM engineer friend (name withheld to protect the guilty) and he had some significant skills, times were in the 2:05 range... |

Guilty of what?
I've run there before, its a great track. Somewhat neutered in the last few years with the extended run off though. |

Yes, some of the challenges of WGI have been tamed to a point but all that armco still stikes fear into the hearts of a guys that usually run on "club" tracks. I'm not nuts about how the esses have changed and apparently neither was the driver of an Elise today-- he spun at the top and wrote off his car... |

Gotcha.
The only real spots which made me nervous were turn 1 and turn 8, which have been made completely safe now. I wonder how one can spin in the esses though. |

How'd you get the opportunity? Did you have to pay or what?

Didn't cost me a cent, though I'm sure I owe the owner dinner! We were having a business meeting, really...

Yeah, you got me on that one. I can only guess that he lifted abruptly or was cutt off-- I don't know how forgiving an Elise is to drive. I will say that I've seen 3 or 4 written-off Elises at WGI over the past 2 years.

I went out as a passenger in one of the 997's Synergy was building for a customer at VIR. Their customer took me out (after having some lessons all day from Price Cobb) for a few laps. Simply amazing. The power, the handling . . . if I could only replicate that on my autox car. . .

Hey man, how are you? As you can see by my sig I've joined the dark side. If I could go back in time I'd have gotten that STi in '05... Well, the guy might still be around. If you make it to Watkins sometime soon a beer (or three) at Seneca Lodge is on me... |

I was wondering that myself, the esses seem like the safest part of the track. I spun my S2000 going into The Boot (Turn 4 I think?) a few years ago. FYI, that's a 3rd gear turn in the S2000, NOT fourth gear with minimal braking. Trust me.
