excellent writeup, worked very well. i ended up not using a new strip of caulking, i hope it seals correctly. i dont have a digital camera, but when i get access to one ill show my baby off

very simple mod, tho pulling the front housing from the back is alittle harder than i thought.

Enigma76: Glad it worked for ya. Is there anything in the write up that could be more clear before i submit it to scoobymods?

DUDE

SWEET

Awesome write up. I read through it and ripped my car up today. It's VERY EASY thanks to your instructions.... For those that are worried I have 10 thumbs and I am a complete putz, and I pulled it off in an hour and a half start to finish. I have some more pictures if anyone needs them. i will probably be uploading these up to pbase tomorrow. I left in my parking lamp orange bit so it looks slightly legal. For those that are worried about not having orange blinkers the stock buld are yellowish so you should be fine. I am ordering silvervisions, but until they get here I don't care... The car look even better than the pictures and cost $600 less than ordering them. Now for the rest of my exterior mods... I am just waiting for a shipment from subaruwrxparts.com and then I have to figure out what to spend the next $1300 that I have on....

Muffler and uppipe and downpipe...

Muffler and springs...

Who knows but everyone that is thinking about this DO IT!!

THANK YOU SKIVVIE!!!!!

Plus they give you 3 bulbs, not just 2 like the other places do.

I dont think they make the Silvervision bulbs for the 04s yet. If you need them, here are the bulb numbers:

Parking light: 168 (you can find these anywhere)
Turn Signal: 7440 (I have found a set of them for $18, they seem to be a more speciality bulb)

LYHTSPD,
where did you find a set of the turn bulbs? I just called one of the local dealers and they don't have them.
Ben

edit,
but then I called another local dealer and they claim to have them for $5 a piece... that and some silver spray paint might just do the trick...

I found the bulbs online. They are Polarg bulbs (kinda pricey, but they are supposed to be brighter than run-of-the-mill bulbs). I found a set of amber 7440s for $18, and a pair of amber 168s for $12. Free shipping!!

I just noticed this today. The front turn signal and back-up light bulbs are the same (#7440, white bulb). The rear turn signal light is a #7440 as well, but it is an amber bulb!! You can just go to the dealer and get a pair of bulbs for the rear turn signals and they will fit in the front turn signals. Others may have already noticed this, but I never said I was the sharpest tool in the shed.

Yeah, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer either, but you have to watch for the serated blade. I did notice that they were the same though. that's why I called my local dealer. They are $5 each from subaru just sos ya know!

Hah, that'll teach me to order stuff without checking the actual part on the car first. Didn't think they'd change the bulbs from the 03's to the 04's. Well... looks like i'll have a set of silvervisions for sale soon. =]

I agree - Great writeup!!!

Will be trying this soon my 04. BTW, had a strange thought - I also currently own a corolla and saw this DIY angel eye mod on this website:

vamp.darkravers.net

Then I thought the shape of the front headlights were pretty similar. What do you guys think? Should I attempt the angel eye mod when I open up the headlights? It looks relatively easy if you've got the time. Or do you guys think this is just way to ricey?

Okay, just to update on the amber bulbs... I called a few local dealerships, and even went to one. Turns out none of them know what they are talking about. Avoid Marin Subaru and Bianco Subaru at all costs. The Bianco Subaru folks were nice, but hardly knowledgable, and the Marin Subaru guy was just a straight out *******... i hung up on him it was so bad.

Anyway... I finally called the nice people down at Santa Cruz Subaru (where i got my Rex from) and they were happy to help. They don't stock the bulb and would have to order it... turns out the retail on the amber wedge is like $21, but Chris offered it to me for $14 and change. I'm going to see if i can source them cheaper online first, but goddamn they are expensive. He actually recommended trying a Toyota dealership since the Matrix's and a few of their other cars use that same bulb. I'll post if i can find them cheap.

jacobsen1: are you SURE the ones that are $5 are the correct bulb? Bianco told me the same thing, but when i got there they handed me the bulb for the '03.

I called bald hill subaru in Warwick RI, and asked for the amber bulb from my back end and they quoted me the $5, but they could have also been mistaken. They close at 4:30 in the afternoon so fridays are the only days I can go and this friday I was sailing in a regatta, so next this comming friday I will try to get some...

Bump...

Did anyone try this with the black spray paint? Wouldn't that effect the "spread" of the light?

Aaron.

FYI, the Part # for the amber bulbs at the dealership is:
84920KE020

These are the rear wagon turn signal bulbs which fit in the front turn signal sockets. The bulbs are a little harder than the clear ones to pop into the socket, but they fit. It took the parts guy and I like 20 minutes to find em. For all the bulbs the computer just says "12v 21W bulb", of which there are like 7 different types. So just bring in that part number and they'll give you the right bulbs. And the bulbs are $15 a piece, so they're no cheaper than the ones LHYTSPD found on the Internet. Hope this helps.

$15 a piece???? What are you talking about man? The ones I bought were $18 a set, and that included shipping. I also like them a little better since they are made from colored glass, not clear glass that has been tinted orange.

Those are a different bulb man. The ones I screwed up on were the parking lamps. Stupid me put an 18w bulb in a socket designed for 5w and started to melt my parking lamp lens a little.

The turn signal bulb I got was the proper 12v @ 21W.

BTW, I think I will claim that I was one of the first ones on here to do this. go me!

Yeah, I know. I just wanted to point that out. And I just want to point out that I saw LYHTSPD's lights and thought they were so cool so I followed. So yeah, I am a follower. But hey, I have SDR's now and you don't. So there. Oh, and mine is a wagon which is just inherently better.
