all you paintballers out there... get in here
recommend me a gun. im new and im thinking about a tippmann a-5, but i want something electronic.. i dont wanna be pumping in a field competition. price range $300-400. even though im new i want something of the intermediate+ level as i have plenty of experience with firearms and breaking them down and cleaning etc. for that reason im pretty confident i can handle skipping the beginner crap, and just getting a good marker from the start..
so whats good out there in my price range?

I've got an electronic Spyder Impulse w/a Dye Boomstick that works great.
Coming from my ancient VM-68, this was a huge difference. Nice, rapid, straight fire. No malfunctions yet. Its no Angel but it works great for the price. |

heh, I'll sell you all my gear (Spyder w/ electronic trigger frame, electric hopper, oil, JT proteus mask, gloves, 12 oz tank, tubes, everything) for $300 shipped. Only took it to play once, and it wasn't my thing so its been in my closet in the box.
edit for a pic http://premium.uploadit.org/tylerwayne/paintball.jpg and a few other things that wouldn't fit on the table. Last edited by wrxpunk53; 09-26-2004 at 11:27 PM. |

Just get a tippman 98, forget the electro-pneumatic stuff for now. Spend money on a good mask, at times it's more important than the gun is in hitting people. People get the pimpin gun, cheap mask. Can't hit anything regardless of what gun you have if you can't see.

Ants,
No disrespect to the old school puimp fans which is fun and I support myself via a CCM Sniper II (I captained a pump only team competing in semi tourneys), in todays rec-ball world unless you plat stock class against others and/or are at a small field I doubt you'll have much fun going pump. Its a fact of life now that semi is the minimum requirement to be competitive on most rec fields today. Don't shoot the messenger. As for the A-5 thats a fine marker and is very popular right now. Myself I'm old school and keep a Tippman 98 Custom around for friends and rec-ball play. Its tougher than Superman and legendary for being as dependable. All you need is a Revy, an upgrade barrel (the stock one is horrible!) and a very inexpensive anti-siphon tank setup if you play in extreme temps of heat or cold. All together the marker and updates should run no more than $300 complete via internet purchases. The A-5 has an e-trigger option but the cost of it plus the gun makes no sense but for the hardcore scenario style enthusiast which is its own branch within the sport overall. If you have any desire to compete in tournaments which are by large Sup-Air and Hyperball fields then I would strrongly suggest you look at an e-Spyder (decent) or better yet an Impulse. The base box stock Impulse offers more than enough capability for most players of any regard. Think of it as a WRX minus the RE92's. It can be upgraded with a laundry list of items though the base unit is an excellent purchase and tool right out the box and cost is in the neighborhood you describe. Now of course there are a hundred other markers you can look into anthing from a 2k4 Autococker to a used Angel, all of which have their merits and supporters. Not to say these or others suck (they don't) but the best value from the info you've shared (newbie, rec'baller, wants to spend >$500...) I feel quite confident about suggesting to you the Impulse. Its easy to own, not dificult to maintain, a lot of marker for the money and best of all its field proven with a long history in both rec & tourney play. Oh and one thing unlike firearms. Take the marker (thats what they're called in the sport rather than 'guns') to your local shop and have them tune it for you. Then go home and leave it the **** alone. I see more people choked up over their gun at my field, tourney events and the store because they couldn't resist jacking with it than I do people who just simply have a "bad" or defective marker. 8 out of 10 times issues with markers in general are due to untrained/unskilled teching of the marker and folks not cleaning the marker (maint.) after use. One last thing. Having even the most expensive kick ass rig which in this sport people have as much as $4K+ (no I'm not kidding) will not do you a bit of good if you don't play, practice and play often...then most importantly learn. Playing once a month and never touching your marker inbetween will get you nothing. Meanwhile playing every weekend or every other and practicing such as dry fire trigger speed drills at home will bump you up the skills ladder real quick. No pump type marker required. Have fun and if you would like more input & advice toward paintball I suggest you stop by the NASIOC of paintball at; www.PBNation.com. There is a ton of good information there from folks that are quite active in the sport be they rec, sceanrio, tournament, refs, field owners, mfrs. and professional paintballers too. Welcome to the sport and my own personal passion. - Janq |
