Horns: Try to install the Hella Triples, or get the new compact ones?
Guys,
I have a question for the horn/wiring gurus. I have the old-school, Hella Triple air horns with compressor off of my Jetta - see picture: But now, these are on the scene: The newer model def. looks easier to install - but the wiring is all still present on the Triples. My only qualm is, where in the hell do you install the Triples on a Legacy? At least the Jetta had such a small motor that there was plenty of space to work with. Anyone installed the Triples and/or the new compact unit? I'd appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks!

If you like the triples, then it's worth it.
But who knows, you might like the compact's sound better...??? |

Not really, it's just that when I removed the resonator box/piping to put in a straight tube to the air scoop, it left a ton of space in that area. Enough that I don't even have to remove anything to get at the left spark plugs for a tune up.

I made a bracket and mounted an extra set of horns in front of the radiator. There is plenty of room up front but you would need to face them down towards the ground. That also may reguire more tubing?

Because Subaru's horns are wimpy and gay?

As for fitment, there is plenty of room between the A/C condenser and the front bumper, which you can pretty easily access by removing the grille. The horns would most likely have to be aimed straight down, but the way the bumper mates up the radiator support there's not much of a gap there, so the sound would be reflected out the front pretty well I think. Actually, I think if it was in that locating up front, it would be better pointing down to keep water and other junk from going into the horns, being in the front grille and all. |

Haha, seriously, I don't care. I see way too many idiots on the road who fully deserve to get the ***** scared out of them. I love these things - they sound like the classic Ferrari horn, and that alone is worth it to me. Thanks for the help so far guys - if anyone has seen pictures, I'd be eternally grateful! |

See, that's what I have but I've been really dissapointed with. Compared to the air horns, they suck. They're far better then stock, but not really that piercing. Plus, mine inevitably lost connectivity at some point and the tone ends up sounding really wierd. Haven't figured out what's causing it to lose full power.

I also have some mini horns (similar to the option JLow03 posted originally) that I snagged off a Caddy in the junkyard. I'm guessin' they'll be a bit more "meaty" than the stock horns and probably have a deeper tone than the Supertones. We shall see... Pat |

if you guys haven't already done it, you might try relaying the Hella Supertones. i've seen quite a few rigged up like that, and they literally knock me back a couple steps when they're hit.

I just installed supertones.
All my wiring is wrapped up (including for the lights), the connections are heat-shrunk, and I'm using a relay so I don't expect any problems. I haven't even used them yet. Last edited by jamal; 11-07-2006 at 05:32 AM. |

Just curious, which kind sounds like a italian/ferrai style tone?
I've read hella supertone is just same as OEM but much louder. How does the compact one that JLow03 posted(not the triple horn) sound? Any advice? Thanks |

Some of the air horns aren't all that impressive.
I think the Hella supertones are more than adequate. The tone/sound is not what some would like. I think some are wanting a deeper "semi truck" sound. |

The Hella Triples are really amazing. I mean, you have no idea - compared the Supertones, they are night and day. I've never found the Supertones to be staggering - most German cars, i.e. my father's Mercedes E430, have very authoritative horns. The Supertones merely improve upon what was stock - the Triples really make people take note. Pat - glad to hear you're having troubles as well. Some days mine work, others they don't. Could be the wiring (in fact, I suspect it to be) but they worked fine for several months. |

I actually have a dual horn setup that was given to me as a gift a LONG time ago, but I never installed them. |

You may want to check the output on ralleylights.com, but I think they're still supposed to be fairly loud.

Non-mainstream, custom installed, cadillac horns, from a Pull & Save for $12, FTW!
Seriously, go look at any 80's cadillac in a junkyard, they all come with 3-4 horns and are good attention getters. Newer ones I think I have one huge horn, but those are also harder to find junked. |

rallylights says the air horns and the supertones are both 118db, so the main difference is the tone.
The dual trumpet horns aren't as loud. |
