I don't like it. It is almost as bad as if it were FWD only, which would be a deal-breaker. The auto is almost a deal breaker, but the rest of the car, in SVX's case makes up for the drawback of being an automatic, plus the fact that the car only cost me $1250 to buy and transport here, so the deal was pretty darn good otherwise.
I would prefer if my SVX had a stick. My next one will hopefully have a converted 5 or 6 speed, and not previously wrecked and marginally repaired. My current SVX is never going to be a car-show queen, but just a very competent sure-footed cruiser. My next one will hopefully be much more of a looker, as well as being extremely competent. My Legacy is a stick, as is the Miata. I like the H6 engine a lot, and I like the rush of the Legacy's turbo, also. I am sure I would love the rotary's silky-smooth throttle response and revving it to the moon, compared to the boxers' 7K redline. I prefer the manual in my Legacy, and in the Miata, to an automatic of course. If Subaru officially backed up an H6 with a manual gearbox with VTD or DCCD, in ANY of their US products, I would probably already own one. An un-corked EZ36 in front of a re-geared STI/Spec.B 6-speed with DCCD would be a beautiful thing, and would be far more winter-competent than an RX8, even if not as good on a dry warm track in the summer. And I could drive that every day of the year, even if a rotary with a 6MT driving just the rear wheels would be a significantly purer experience under just the right circumstances.

While it may have not met your expectations, the RX8 sold much better than the FD (see sales chart couple pages back). Since we're talking about modified cars now, yeah the rotary can put up some big numbers (granted, 3 rotor ) |
