Default Subaru requires your VIN to lookup a part?

Why the hell do they have to have my VIN to get me a price for a part!

Everytime I've had to call to get a part, my WRX is at home, not being driven because it needs the part, so I don't have the VIN handy.

WTF!

the new software for the parts look up has changed and now requires a vin number. Its supposed to be more effecient... I thinks its a PITA too. Upgrade? I guess

Subaru doesnt require your vin to look up a part.

Of course, having the vin number takes all of the guesswork out of choosing the correct part the first time.

Most parts folks can look up parts w/out a vin

Some will always require a vin simply because they don't want to be incorrect and/or they are lazy.....

And sometimes we parts people HAVE to have the vin to make sure we're getting you the right part.
with some parts, it's just impossible to filter down w/o a vin number.

Already been discussed here

How is this a Warranty/SOA issue?

exactly. espically when I call a dealer.

but that said, the vin is a great way to be sure you are getting exactly the right part.

I ran into this recently when ordering the cargo area light and rear power socket for my Impreza. The parts person told me that the parts were not listed for my VIN and may not work.

they wont.

the wiring for these pieces is not in your car.... (under the headliner)

you would need to either install wrx headliner wiring

or custom wire the pieces

I like it. Even though no one to my knowledge requires this, more and more dealers of all makes of vehicles are asking for a VIN. Takes the guesswork out of getting the right part. I carry the VINs and build dates of all my vehicles in my notebook, that way I have them at my fingertips. Also on some of the upgrades/mods I've taken in a VIN off a vehicle that has the part I'm looking for and I've received the right part every time. Works for me.

Heh heh, yeah. A while ago I went in to get a bunch of oil drain plug seal rings (I always like to have them on hand) and the guy asked me for the VIN.

Me: "Why do you need the VIN for a few seal rings? It's an '02 WRX."

Him: "I just need it."

Me: "Everybody else usually just grabs them for me. I don't have the car here, and I don't know the VIN. How many different drain plugs did they use?"

Him: "Oh, you're right, I don't need it. I'll go get them."

As a parts wholesaler, I totally understand the need for the vin.

What's really a shame: It's the WHOLE vin. Not the last 6, not the last 8, the whole darn 17 digit shtick!

Neat tip though: Find the VIN on auto trader if you need a custom application. That's what I've been using to get my 06 STI stuff

OMG

The world must be coming to an end when a parts department ask for the VIN to ensure they get you the correct part the first time.

if you are using bell and howell (now snap on) yes you need the last 8.
Dealres using the "FAST" parts system you need all 17. Unless you take the last 8 and do a vehicle inquiry to get the rest.

also this has nothing to do with this forum, please see the sticky in the general forum on this subject. Dealers are not using your vin to do anything other than look up parts.

dont be so paranoid.
