QFT

Unless you signed a repair order authorizing the replacement of your transmission you are in the clear. legally they can not make you pay for this. You didn't authorize it. The dealership is stuck with this one.

Go in to the dealership. walk to the service counter. politely ask for your keys and thank them for repairing it for free. take your keys and drive off. You don't owe a thing. Unless they have your sig on paper there is nothing they can do at this point.

I'm pretty sure they knew exactly that, and that's why they have been "on my side" throughout this. I am relieved to say that the warranty denial did finally get overturned, and the car was released to me free of charge earlier today.

I am still not pleased that the thing blew up in the first place, and though it did get covered, the dealership informed me that if it happens again it WON'T be covered. So, HOORAY, I have a brand new car with a bumper-to-bumper-except-the-transmission-and-anything-else-we-don't-wanna-cover warranty. I had some strong words for them, they had some for me, but in the end I managed to get the car back peacefully enough (I did apologize for some of my outburst).

I called the woman who was 'on the case' at Subaru customer service, and informed her of how it all went down, and told her I didn't like the idea of a selective warranty and the general treatment of this case from front to back. FWIW she told me that higher-ups would be informed of this.

Tomorrow I will go back to the selling dealer and tell them of my woes. I don't know that I'll get any more than "I'm sorry to hear that" but wtv. I need to vent a bit and I want everyone to know about this.

Maybe someone will send me a fruit basket. That would be nice.

Maybe a spare tranny (just in case) would be nice too.

Companies with names beginning with H appear generally to be more Helpful.

Your reaction to that S company treatment is understandable based on other experiences.

Thanks! And at least the flaming turd shows me that they know I'm alive, that's something I guess

Exact same thing happened to me at 52k miles on my 2007 wrx. Awaiting to hear back from SoA if they will cover it. They are currently "investigating abuse", but this seems like a common problem.

Default 09 impreza clutch/throwout bearing issues

Name: Seth

Make: 09 Impreza WRX

Mileage: ~19k

Time Out Of Use: one week

Problem And Likely Cause: large amounts of vibration in clutch when disengaged clutch pedal

Modifications: none other than tint

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): No (see below)

Reason Given For Denial: normal wear item

Your Story: At 8.5k miles my whole clutch went out. I was cruising on the highway with the cruise on and the clutch starting slipping constantly. The dealer (Mike Shaw Subaru) gave me a goodwill replacement on the clutch, flywheel, and throwout bearing. I was informed at the time that the throwout bearing went and damaged the clutch in such a manner that caused it to slip.

Given a new clutch and how quickly it went, I went out of my way to be as gentle as possible on the clutch. No dropping, slipping or ridding of the pedal. Last week, I was exiting the highway shifted into neutral and coasted to a stop. When I started again the when I was disengaging the clutch pedal (about 1.5k rpms engine 1st gear) and i felt an abnormal amount of vibrations. Every shift there after I felt the same vibrations, even in reverse. The next day I dropped the car off at a transmission place near my work.

The mechanic took apart the transmission and found that "the clutch was disentegrating". There were bits of clutch everywhere in the transmission. The mechanic had the clutch inspected by the clutch doctor, the only thing other than that there was unusually extreme wear was that there was an large amount of what he thought to be anti-seize inside the housing. The mechanic then resurfaced the flywheel. The mechanic also noted that the shaft the throwout bearing is mounted on has a little indentation in it.

I've been in discussion with my dealer and they said they needed to see the clutch, throwout bearing and flywheel. Since the flywheel was in good enough condition for the mechanic to resurface it I gave the dealer the clutch and throwout bearing. I spoke with the service manager this morning and here is the summary of the discussion:
1. he commented there was excessive wear on the clutch, and didn't comment on the throwout bearing
2. they needed to drive the car to prove anything towards the issue being covered under warranty.

Currently the car is at the transmission place (in pieces) about 45 miles away from the dealer. So I'm in a pickle and not sure what to do, any help would be awesome!

You should have only dealt with the dealer. Never use a private place while you're under warranty.

+1^ Unless you modded it and then you are responsible for it. But, you didn't in this case. So, now you are stuck...... Been there done that and have the bills.

Stupid and offensive question, but...is this your first manual transmission car?

Unfortunately, Subaru does not allow resurfacing of flywheels. There is no spec listed for minimum flywheel thickness. I've seen flywheels cut to the point where the springs of the clutch disc hit the heads of the flywheel bolts.

What's the reasoning behind always replacing the flywheel instead of resurfacing it?

As he just mentioned, if you take too much off, the damping springs on the clutch disc can get close enough to the flywheel crank bolts that it rubs....not good.

That and engagement issues. Every Subaru tech and Field rep has told me that SOA does not recommend resurfacing flywheels. Either clean it up and re-use it or replace it.

Reason Given For Denial: User error

Your Story: So the clutch began to slip around 2700 miles, never dumped the clutch or shifted above 4500 rpm at that point. I took it to the dealership, they pulled it and said it was user error. I asked them to explain, all they would say is that it appeared as though the car had been taken to a drag strip, which I knew wasn't true. So I ended up having to pay out of pocket.

^ how is that possible? how do they deny because 'it may' have been taken to a dragstrip,.? that makes no sense, they have to give you proven reason you caused it to wear. A random assumption of racing with zero mods and no proof will not hold up. Call SOA.

Parthew.....you can take your car, and jam something between the clutch pedal and the upper 'stop' such that the clutch is nevery 100% engaged and slightly slipping under load and it would last much longer than 2700 miles. The WORST 'user' couldn't kill a clutch in 2700 miles even if it was your job to destroy a clutch ASAP.

I would involve SOA if I were you.

I could destroy a clutch in a parking lot. All they have to do is pull the transmission and look at the flywheel and clutch disk/pressure plate. It is even worse if there is clutch material in the bellhousing area.

True, but you would know you burned up the clutch. The smoke and stink would give it away.

I've seen clutches taken out in less then 3000 miles before. and they were operator error. it doesn't need to involve a track to do this and it doesn't need to be launched.

you would think so... but I have had people tow in their vehicles because it lost power on the hwy. turns out the clutch was toast and stank like you wouldn't believe. for some odd reason they never noticed the smell.

I have had people bring their car in saying the clutch "just broke". I had one that comes to time. Yet when you get the vehicle look it over, remove the trans and ask them if they got it stuck, they lie and say no. When we show them the pounds of sand that was stuck in the crossmember and undercarriage, they are speechless.

That particular vehicle stunk so bad you could smell it 15 feet away.

Do you mean to tell me that some customers will be untruthful in an attempt to get a repair covered under warranty?

No, say it ain't so!

its those people that make it hard for honest customers to get warranty work done. "yeah sure you were just driving normally through the intersection when second gear let go? haha... right............"

This says either the release/throw out bearing or the pilot bearing in the flywheel has broke open or failed as they are both sealed grease bearings.
