Default OUCH, OUCH, and OUCH. BimmerWorld 3-Car Crash In-Car Footage from Watkins.

Watkins Glen was a rough day for BimmerWorld Racing, with all three cars being taken out in one corner. Watch the crash unfold from all three in-car cameras.

So was it Clay getting into the tires that caused it all? And wasn't one of the team cars ahead of him?

Clay in the tires, collected by both teammates.

Didn't look like he had the greatest line in the world going into that corner, and just took the track out a wee bit far. It looks like the three BMWs were the only ones involved in that, in the end. By trying to avoid each other they all went into spins and tagged each other... and all the other cars drove right on through the carnage.

For some reason your post reminds me of John Madden. "The team who scores more points is going to win."

Hrmmm... I don't know whether to be insulted or enthused. Madden is a fool, but he rakes in lots of cash. If I can state the obvious as well as him, I might be on the road to riches. I'm gonna have to ponder this one for a while

So, really, did any other cars actually get caught in that wreck? From the in-car cameras, I can't completely tell.

Wonder why they need tire walls there, they had Styrofoam there when I did a track day in 03. It was fun taking the turn wide there. From what I saw, he just understeered and kept the throttle in it when he should have lifted off the steering or the throttle.

They also might want to put up a video on ebay of them not crashing out all three cars

It looks like there were four cars. The first car came to rest outside the corner, but the second in-car shows two cars on the inside (plus the car the cam is in).

It wasn't so much his chosen line as it was brutal amounts of understeer launching the car to the outer edge of the turns. It's hard to make out in places becuase of the dark cockpit, but he has to crank in about 900deg of input to get the car to turn.

In a few of the preceding turns, he was also off line from apex to exit as the car just wouldn't turn.

Add in that he was running 5th or so, and you can see he was doing his best to keep pace while fighting the car. At Laguna Seca, a dipped wheel wouldn't cost you anything. At Watkins, it cost a lot...

From a viewer/enthusiast point of view that was to put it simply 'dreadful.' Coming off the last corner you could see Clay getting out of shape and then before you know it parts were all over the track....

The part that took a second to grasp was that all three BimmerWorld cars were out. The Tripoint mazda team car is trashed too.

From my perspective one of the Bimmerworld cars is salvagable and of the other two cars maybe one can be and it was clays car... the car behind clay on the left of the track is 'trashbin'. I am not sure how the third BW car got so far out of shape to fishtail all the way across the track when there was room and tankslap the tripoint car in the nose... but we were not it the car so we will never know now.

All in all this was a very expensive mistake....

Damn! Well, this beats the Infineon start crash. Wasn't there another race that involved 2 or 3 of the BimmerWorld cars on the start. It's like they are magnetically attracted to each other when any of them have an issue!

So if they have any less than three spare/backup cars, it's a safe bet that Clay will be the one sitting out the next round?

I saw this yesterday. Sadly that was basically the end of the race. Big shunt, though.

If you can believe it, all three BimmerWorld cars are being fixed. Nick's is supposedly already done... The only car in that incident that is trash because of tweaked frame rails is the Mazda 6 from Tri-Point driven by Jim Daniels. Shame...

Good ol' Dorsey aint so good at judging damage... haha

Part of the understeer could be the line though. I know I can make any car understeer horribly if I just turn in way early. And in the case of a car you know is understeering, putting in more lock is the exact opposite of what you want to do.

That is a possible cause of understeer, but keeping in mind how many laps he has at the track, and that he was running towards the front, we can assume he didn't forget where to turn in at Watkins Glen.

Look at his hands on the wheel in the corners prior to the crash.

Yes, you are correct. It was either 03 or 04, and all 3 cars came together before start finish, with one of the cars on its roof. It was pretty impressive to watch that from pit lane.

Magnetically attracted to each other? Like Timo Glock and his teammate last year at the GP2 race in Magny Cours?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lonAHJbH3lQ

PS. I searched hard to find a video that didn't also include the Ernesto Viso crash that I know disturbs some of you. This is ONLY the Glock incident.
