New ACT SB5-HDSS Clutch Install
I have been a member here at NASIOC for about a week. I joined because I have just started my clutch shopping experience. My 2007 WRX is completely stock with about 77k on the odometer. I bought it brand new in 2007 and absolutely love it. Here recently I have noticed that my clutch has started slipping and have decided to start the shopping process for a new one.
My first post on here was a less then desirable one as I have found NASIOC is full of a bunch of trolling tools looking to attempt to show how big their dicks are. I asked a question and the only good answer I got was a link to the Clutch FAQ thread. I found it to be more then helpful. After some research I have decided to go with ACT because of the excellent reviews it has got. I drive my car daily and it is my only one so when I do the clutch I need it to be right the first time. I have decided to go with a full face sprung organic disk for its excellent stock characteristics. The part number is this so you know which one I am talking about: SB5-HDSS. I am going to pair it with an ACT Streetlite flywheel. I am posting this thread to find out the following: 1. Does anyone have any experience with this set up? How does it fair and what can I expect out of it? 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this setup? 3. Is there anything else I need in order to do the replacement or anything you would suggest doing while I am performing the switch? 4. Any other HELPFUL information would be greatly appreciated. Please try to keep in mind I am new to the tuning world and this is the first 'Aftermarket" part that will going on my vehicle.

The HDSS is MUCH stronger than you need unless you have a turbo swap you didn't tell us about. Personally I'd stick to the Exedy OEM replacement or stage 1. Clutches are one area where you buy what you need and that's it...bigger is not better. That said, at least you picked the lowest ACT has to offer.
1) I have an ACT XTSS and Prolite flywheel, so it's kinda similar, but more aggressive. Honestly I think you'll probably like it. It's harder to drive, it'll take some getting used to, and morons who you let drive your car (emissions testing people, car wash people, etc) will likely stall it multiple times trying to just pull it forward 5 feet. But, up and down shifting will be smoother due to less rotating mass, and initial engagement should still be smooth. 2) Advantages: smoother/faster up and down shifting Disadvantages: less rotating inertia means worse launches and it'll be more difficult to accelerate from a stop 3) Not that I can think of. Make sure your rear main seal is in good condition, because if it's leaking at all now will be the time to swap it out. 4) There are two ways to do the swap. First is to disconnect the front axles and driveshaft and drop the tranny. Second is to pull the radiator, lift the engine, and shift it forward a half a foot. I recommend the latter. |

You still forgot to mention how much torque your car is making. That's the most important number.

Some of us "Trolls" have been here for YEARS answering questions from people such as yourself.. Some obviously have more time and knowledge than others.. So some post more and know more.. The kick in the balls comes after reading and answering the possibly 40th post of the day (across mutiple forums and forum sections of course) and then finding out that EVERYTHING you first read and then subsequently took the time to post an opinion on... was wrong...BECAUSE pertinent info was left out... If the car is stock, is there a reason why the clutch isn't staying stock?
I can see stepping to an Exedy Stage 1 clutch if you're bumping up boost and want better grab when launching. This is where my brother's at, and 21psi with the Stage 1 clutch is a good fit for slipping the clutch on a high rpm 1st gear launch. OEM is Exedy. There are fan boys for both sides as well as haters for both sides on the Exedy vs ACT debate. Both are pretty competitive these days I'm sure. Torque specs are typically at slip, so plan choice based on that and based on your long term modding plans. I would compare both brands, look at specs, and probably just buy the well fitting one that costs less. I would also note that OEM costs a LOT less than these higher torque options, so if value is a concern stock may be the way to stay. It just comes down to your plans with your car. |
