Hybrid Rear Axles?
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone knows how to go about making up a set of "hybrid" rear axles to suit an 06 WRX. I want to retain my R160 rear diff (for a number of reasons) but swap to later 05+ STi rear hubs. I know my WRX rear axles wont fit in the STi hubs, and visa versa. Is it a simple matter of finding the correct STi outer stub and CV and attaching it to the WRX axle? Will the WRX axle have the right number of splines to mate with the inner race of the STi CV? Am I over-simplifying things or on the wrong track completly? I know very little about these particular parts so forgive my noobness, and any help would be appreciated. Chris.

You can do the complete R180 swap using STi axles, or you can order the Drive-Shaft-Shop conversion axles.
There isn't a combination of OEM components that will make the R160 work with STi hubs. Phil Andrewtech Automotive |

That's the least common kind of swap so, I think you're out of luck. I don't even think DSS makes axles to go from R160 to STI hubs

Ahh, I didn't read it right. That's correct, no one makes R160->STi axles. Only R180->OEM hubs.

The only reason to keep the R160 is because you already spent $1000 on a new LSD for it. Is that why you want to keep it?

Thanks for the replies guys. I didn't realise that the conversion was that uncommon.
The reason I want to go this way is: I want to keep my 5 speed. The 06+ is not made of glass, like many would have you believe. I like the ratios for my circuits and it is a damn sight lighter than the 6 speed. I'm not pumping out massive power, and won't have the money to do so. I can't swap to an R180 with my 5 speed because I don't think they make an R180 ratio to match (I'm told I have a 3.7 rear, which you can't get in R180). I can use the MFactory LSD to strengthen my R160's major weak point too (spider gears), and it is lighter than the R180. BUT, I need to swap to a 5x114 rear end. I have the 6 Gun conversion front end and currently use a 5x114->5x100 modified bearing. I'd like to be able to buy regular 5x114 bearings, instead of having to get them from 6 Gun or have them custom drilled. 5x114 also offers a greater wheel choice. Finally, I have some tricky Brembo front calipers (not the regular STi type) that I'll be running next season and I'd like to match them up to a Brembo rear. This is not really necessary, I'd just like to for my own satisfaction. So... I wanted to go to the 05+ STi rear hubs to solve my problem, but it looks like I can't. Seems I can't swap over to the complete R180 rear end either. That sucks. Is there a way of re-drilling the stock WRX hubs to convert them to 5x114? MasterKwan, I recall a photograph you had on here somewhere of the 2 different hubs and it looked like the mounting points for the ABS ring would interfere with any re-drilling. Can anyone confirm this? Is there enough meat on the WRX hub to re-drill? Suberdave, I'd like to find a local solution before buying more stuff from the US, but I'll keep them in mind. Thanks again for the input guys. Chris. |

I don't think the WRX hub is big enough to support re-drilling to a larger spacing. The STI hub is both thicker and wider. Yeah, the tone ring is much larger on the STI hub. People have talked about machining an STI hub down so it fits into a WRX bearing but, I'm not clear how much meat you'd have left after doing that. You also have the same tone ring problem. Maybe consider changing the transfer gears to support the R180?
