Default Be sure to change your Cabin Air filter!!!

Vehicle 04 STi
Mileage 79xxxx

Ok so I ordered a bunch of Maint parts for summer, some obsecure stuff like PCV valve, and rad caps, plus a few other thing. In my order was a Genuine OEM Cabin air Filter.

I figured it was time to replace it...actually I knew it was well over due. I NEVER expected this thing to be like this though!

Total time needed to replace 25 minutes for a green thumb.

Tools needed : Phillips screw driver.

This filter was BLACK and I mean BLACK, I have pictures will upload in a moment.

How many miles, years, before you replaced it. You should replace it every year.

I replaced mine at 30k miles and it was pretty disgusting. There were leaves and all sorts of crap in there. Only reason I changed it was because when you switch the ventilation from outside to recirculating, you can hear the leaves stuck in there. I'm most likely going to change mine at least once a year. I bought my filter off eBay for like $12-$14 (i forget), but it looks identical to the subaru oem one ($30 ripoff).

^^correct the 02/03 WRX's didn't come with the cabin air filter from the factory. Not sure about the later models. I put one in about 4/5 months ago, got one from ebay for 14.25 shipped. The filter should be changed yearly, as seen in the pictures above, it gets pretty dirty if not changed.

The cabin filter is stored behind the glove box. You have to take out the glove box first.

Are you the original owner of the car. 02 models didn't come with the cabin filter as far as I know. I bought my car new, and didn't have one. Maybe it was an option.

Just bought one on ebay as well for $12....I'm a HUGE fan of replacing parts with oem but I couldn't bring myself to spend $30+ on a simple filter for this job..

I like what it says in the manual on page 4-13. A bunch of useless information and not a single picture of where it's located at or how to get to it. Could you imagine every 7,500 miles spending $30ish on this filter, comes out costing more than replacing the oil, wtf.

Air Filtration system (if equipped)

If your vehicle's air conditioning system is equipped with an air filtration system, replace the filter element according to the replacement schedule shown below. This schedule should be followed to maintain the filter's dust collection ability. Under extremely dusty conditions, the filter should be replaced more frequently. It is recommended that you have your filter checked or replaced by your SUBARU dealer. For replacement, use only a genuine SUBARU air filter kit.

Replacement schedule:
Every 12 months or 7,500 miles whichever comes first.

NOTE
The filter can influence the air conditioning, heating and defroster performance if not properly maintained.

I just got a filter from Advanced Auto Parts and it cost $12... it fits almost perfectly. It is a Purolator "Breathe Easy" # C38188 electrostatic charged cabin air filter.

I did the Home Depot special last time, but I was very unhappy with the filtering capability (had lots of dust making it past the filter and into my AC system) so I went with a real cabin air filter this time.
