TiC Klunk Killer - Comfort vs Race
i'm thinking of getting of the TiC Klunk killer for my 06 rex. i'm split between the 'comfort' and 'race' versions. keen on 'comfort' becos want to minimise NVH increase but thinking of 'race' becos i'm afraid the improvement using 'comfort' would be marginal and both cost the same.
any insights/opinions on the above? thanks!

If you drive every day and like music, comfort...
That's me, and I opted for just the comfort diff bushings to see if they'll do the trick alone with minimal nvh |

I just installed the comfort version on my wagon.
I just installed the klunk killer package. Everything was straight forward (and I did it on ramps). I was wondering about the NVH issues. Its the comfort version. I dont have any kind of whine or vibration, but I am hearing a noise that I've never heard. On quick decelleration I hear a click or klunk from the rear. Almost sounds like something loose but I know that the bolts are pretty damn tight (and I rechecked). Is this that "normal" diff locking sound that people get? I dont get it on accelleration, just when I make the rear jerk with quick on/off throttle. I just never had the sound before but I've read that other users have heard the rear diff very pronounced on stock cars. |

Anyways, has anyone got the RACE version? I'm pretty sure I am going to go with it, but I wanted NVH reviews |

I just installed Unabombers Sexy Rear end which is the "race" version klunk killer and a set rear subframe lockdown bolts from Whiteline. It feels like my rear end is ALOT tighter, but I know have a clunk when on/off the throttle. Kinda weird that I installed a kit called the klunk killer and know I have a klunk that I never had before, lol. Oh well, go with the race version. Nick

I have the Race Klunk Killer, and I don't feel like it created excessive NVH, nor did it cause any new klunking to occur. Acceptable NVH is a subjective thing though... I also happen to think that Cusco motor & trans mounts are acceptable.

The low speed clicks and ticks you are hearing is the rear diff.
The klunk killer is to eliminate the high rpm/hard shifts that slam the rear rear diff and subframe around. |

Yeah, I was just goint to state what you had emailed me. The click is the diff engaging....which I thought was odd too (adding the KK and getting the Klunk?@#). Its always done it, you can just hear it now.
There IS some whine at 60-70, but its not bad and I expected that to happen. Accelleration is different. It seems to respond quicker(?) The start off from a stop feels much "tighter" I guess? (I'm digging for a description here but I cant think of the word). There is definitely a difference, its just hard to name it. j |

I guess my car will be unbearable with the RACE version and Cusco engine/tranny mounts...Sounds like FUN!
And ude, what your saying is exactly what I want; To get rid of that excessive lag upon acceleration (and it ISNT the drivebywire) by eliminating wasted time and energy the engine and drivetrain uses up in the soft mounts/bushings. The 05 RS wasn't ANYWHERE near as bad as this car, and I had both at the same time for one day. 33k on the RS and 15 miles on the i, and the i definitely had sloppier acceleration. (minus the .00005 second delay of the drivebywire) |

Mine is throttle by cable...but you can definitely feel less slop in the acceleration.
Also...The diff brace bushings can be popped out EASILY. I was able to push them through with a piece of wood while standing on the brace. The diff's studs came out without having to "double nut" ...lol.... the bolts but I did have plenty of rust on them. My next mods are either endlinks or brake lines, but I think I'd like to do the tranny mounts and bushings. I just dont want to move too much of the driveline shock to the gears by making other parts stiffer. Of course, I could alway adjust my driving habbits....I think the stock driveline has too much slop in it. When I had my Spec V, it was a common thing to fill the mounts with 3m window weld to make them solid. Removing that slop helped shifting and throttle control significantly, I think I could acheive the same here with harder mounts. j |

I feel as long as you aren't dropping the clutch in at 4k plus speeds, all your going to do is eat a clutch faster. Seeing as how I don't like to slam gears (take my time shifting) I figure I'd be doing ok. I launch on average about once a month, and it's only ever on snow/dirt/mud, never dry pavement.

Which one is the original bushing set? (before there was an option) I hope it's the race....I love NVH.

The original was the race version. Actually, it became the race version after the comfort version was created. I have been running the "race" version on my wrx for...um....longer than I can remember right now and did get an increase in noise around 60 mph. Oddly enough our sti did not get nearly as much of a NVH increase as our wrx did.

It would be interesting to find out if there is an interest in solid bushings(Is it still a bushing if it's solid?) all around the car.
I drive my car mostly on the street, and I have your and Kartboy's bushings all around. I think the only areas I don't have upgraded bushings are the lateral links, front control arms and the shifter pivot. I'm ready for the race car feel. If you decide to make any trial sets of solid bushings/mounts, remember me I'll be your guinea pig. |
