Which brand of shock to use in a rally car
I have a set of Tokico adjustable shocks on my rally car. But the darn think is leaking fluid, so it looks like i need to replace it. Which kind of shocks would you use? I'm thinking of getting the non-adjusteable Tokico shocks, but someone said these shocks are made for street use, not for gravel. I don't want to pay for something like DMS even though they make excellent shocks for rally cars. How about Bilstein? All I'm looking for is something affordable.

Get you what you pay for. DMS is a CHEAP rally shock, when you compare it against some of the other well-known brands.
We've used DMS in both of our rally cars, and we've finally broken one corner. First time ever... but it was a HUGE hit. |

DMS about $3,500 a set of four. Ohlins $2,300 each corner.
It may be cheaper for you to just replace what you have, but carry spares. Cheers! John |

eh? i paid $2400 for my DMS...
shop around... and good deals may be found. but yes... DMS is the best setup for the buck. do not compromise on safety or suspension these are 2 very very key things in rally prep. good luck Jamie www.subiegal.com |

Jamie, since DMS North America has been formed, the prices have gone up dramatically.
Still the cheapest and best thing out there IMHO, but not as cheap as they used to be. My first set cost just under $2K. Cheers! John |

I hear Tein HG are about $2100 a set (Tein Gravel are even less expensive), but they hardly ever come up in these threads. Anyone know the scoop on these in rallies?

I don't know anyone that uses them on a Subaru in rally. Anyone have experience with them?
Cheers! John |

I run Tein HGs in my rally-x car and I love them. Tein also has a new rally setup that's cheaper, but is only one way adjustable. The HGs are bump and rebound adjustable, and have been operating well on my car for around a year now. My only concern is that they should be valved a little stiffer since I run them at 2 clicks off hard - 20+ clicks of adjustability don't do me much good if anything more than 4 clicks off hard is too soft!
Scoff all you want at them being on a rally-x car, I run my car at Rally Park North East and I run it hard. The Rally Sprints we've had there have been major car breakers (a US spec lancer blew out all four DMS on his first stage!), and the Rally-X there is run on portions of the same roads. The NC Rally team 2.5RS rally car broke the welds off the brakets where the DMS attaches to the knuckle. And I myself have broken off large chunks of my 15" alloys from a Legacy Turbo. So the point is these things are as proven as I can manage at the moment - if they were stiffer we would use them as spares for the rally car. When I first got them I wrote up a big review, which you can find here. Check it out! Alex |

more info = better advice
Hi whitenoise...
If you'd give us a bit more info about the car, it would help you get more informed feedback to your questions. car model, year, etc intended use: "brisk TSD," regional/club rally, Pro/National rally, rally-X etc current mods: is car caged, etc? your future plans for it, what series you want to compete in, etc. ciao for now, Dave G "...embrace loose gravel, bewre big trees..." |

I don't feel like going too into it, but I also had DMS 50MM for about 6 months and I hated them. They are not meant for street cars and require constant cleaning if you want the adjusters to work... Alex |

I'm pretty sure I've misspelled his name, but Tam-Peachie is the Tein mascot. I think he's stoked you like your Teins so much.

Here's some info RB5 Clone,
Its a 1985 Corolla GTS I'm planning to drive it in regional rallies and autocross events. This car is to gain experience in rallying so national's will be out of the question. The regional rallies in Western Canada have 2 snow events and 2 gravel events. I purchased the car during the summer and slowly changing things so that I felt comfortable sitting in it. The car have a regulation approved roll-cage, extingishers, teri-trip, everything needed for a rally is in the car. It doesn't look like I have the budget for a $2000 US for shocks, cause I got the car for $5000 Can. How about heavy duty streets shocks? |

good shocks on the car = fewer shocks to yer body
Thanks for add'l info.
If you opt for heavy duty street shocks, buy a couple extras cause you're gonna need em. Street shocks are just not engineered to withstand the abuse rally gear is going to endure. If you splurge for DMS, it's more of a one-time expense (yeh, right) cause they are so tough. You may need rebuilds after a season or two, but unless you wreck, you're unlikely to need new shocks with DMS. Did I say that they are tough? We've whacked toaster-sized rocks at speed and bounced out (or NOT bounced out) of numerous ditches without shock damage. OK, so there were minor details like busted wheels and popped tires and smooshed front bumpers, but you get the idea... DMS are not just tough, they are safe cause they let you maintain control while other shocks would have your car flopping around and headed for the nearest upright objects at a high rate of speed. Even while learning, more control is definitely a Good Thing. You may have limited options for upgrading your Corolla (there's prolly not as much aftermarket support as for a Subaru, for example) , but there are enough of them running in Canada so you should be able to tap into proven knowledge there. I have bought Bilstein HD shocks for my 67 Volvo Amazon, will let ya know how they last after a few rallyxes.... ciao for now, Dave G Codriver and Part-Time Wheel Twiddler Last Ditch Racing deepest-darkest Maine |
