Default Successful Conversions Board

Just wanted to hear some successful conversion stories.

I have had some experience with Subaru conversions, Its a fun thing about Subarus , being lego-like as they are.

Wanted to hear some of your stories including problems, new findings on compatible parts, lessons learned, any knowledge gained on wiring, any solutions to problems eccountered, and of course the success story of the end product.

Please include Cars year and donor car year, list of parts swapped. And any other useful info

Thanks everyone

Josh

well, I got tired of trying to think of all the parts I've got on there, so I wrote a page on my site for it.
It started life with a 3-speed automatic tranny, FWD, one injector, a distributer, and only 1.8l of displacement.....

now it has 4 injectors, 3 diffs, 2 coils, 5 gears, 3 pedals, and 2.2l!!
meet the Frankenwagon:
http://www.numbchuxconversions.com/frankenwagon.htm
hmmm...that reminds me.....I should put some pics of this years ice race up there too.....

got about 17k miles on the setup. putting the body at 192k, and the engine at 267k!!

love it to death. good mileage, pretty reliable (pizza delivery abuse up here in the cold and rough roads is hard on it), and second gear STILL puts an ear-to-ear grin on my face EVERY time.

for EJ20G swaps.

Don't mix up the MAF and the igniter plugs.....

they interplug into each other's sockets

umm.. also dont electrical tape up all your wiring until you're sure that everything works.

Im sure there were parts im missing here but you get the point.....my biggest lessons learned are:
Send wiring to someone else
make sure you have a COMPLETE donor car
might as well mod it while you build it
when something goes wrong step back and think about it cause you may be over looking something simple
have fun w/ it

Heres a pic

99 rs to a v4 drivetrain. I think the biggest lessons was to get the whole donor or whole front if from japan and do all the high mileage maintenance before the swap ( headgaskets, clutch, etc.) it also helps to budget a couple of $,$$$ more than what you thought. I know I found ways to spend it.

that XT6 is gorgeous.
How well does the EJ25 stack up compared to an EA82T?

Thanks, my XT is my baby.

When I first did the swap on the Rx people always made the comment "one HG problem for a newer one" and kinda shunned me on the old school board. My opinion is that they are great motors that can be had really cheap. The 165 hp vs the 1.8Ts 115 is a HUGE difference, the car went from a high 18 second car to a low 15 second car. On top of that it got +30 MPG when driven nicely and had lots of fun in the weather with it's new found low end grunt. The EA82T is junk, old, underpowered, unreliable junk. Makes the problematic EJ25 look like a star.

04 Sti donor car into a 2000 2.5RS sedan
Random things of note off the top of my head:

-I haven't been able to locate radiator brackets for use of a GD rad in a GC chassis. I've seen a prototype and tried to pursue them but the maker decided not to produce them on a full scale. It's not hard to make your own but it would be nice to have some nice looking machined ones.
-I used the ECS(East Coast Swappers) Drive by wire pedal adapter plate. Makes mounting the pedal easy and hassle free - nice piece.
-I recommend using as much from the donor car as you can. Gas tank, wiring harnesses, etc. I used everything I could. The only 2000 wiring harnesses left in the car are in the dome and doors. This cuts down on splicing.
-I used the GD cluster in the GC dash, a little cutting of the dash and it fits fine. There will be open space in the corners, but that doesn't bother me personally.
-The splicing isn't too bad. The lights/horn/wiper motor/dome are pretty straight forward. Some electrical experience is required to splice the ignition stuff on the steering column and HVAC. The HVAC is kind of weird to splice in because the STi uses an auto climate system and it's electronically controlled where my 2.5RS is cable operated. Had my father help me get that all working soundly. I also had some trouble with the doors because my wiring diagrams were not matching up at all. I had to power probe it all and figure it out like that. Not terribly hard just time consuming.
-I used everything: Entire suspension minus the front and rear struts, entire braking system including the ABS pump/hubs/rotors/etc (minus the lines, those all matched up fine, assuming the car you're swapping into had ABS), All wiring harnesses (engine/dash/incabin/bulk/etc), Cluster, Entire longblock with all accessories, 6spd trans with working dccd and all, radiator.. Pretty much an 04 STi wearing GC clothing.. or as close to it as you can get. Tho I would LOVE to get the GD dash and seats into my car eventually.
-There is a unit, I believe for the ABS, that is located near the glove box. This needs to be mounted in a certain position if I recall correctly. Parallel to the ground or something. I'm kind of hazey on this memory so if i'm wrong someone please correct me.
-If you ever plan to paint the car I would highly recommend painting the engine bay first while everything is out of it.

This is all just off the top of my head... there is definitely more tips and advice to help one through the swap process but i'm not going to sit here and write a novel. Any questions I would be happy to help anyone with though so feel free to shoot me a PM! I had a few people on the board help me when I was stuck and I really appreciated it, so I guess in repayment I can try my hardest to pass on the help to others.

A downfall for me on this swap was I didn't buy the donor car itself, I just bought everything off of it through a friend. So I didn't get to see exactly how everything was mounted on the STi. Might sound sort of funny but it would of helped me a lot. To see exactly where/how each sensor is mounted. When I first got the swap done I was in a rush and kind of just zip tied alot of things to keep them secure, which really wasn't a great idea. On bumps you would hear noises from the dash and stuff. And stupid little things like I didn't mount the ambient temp sensor right and the wires were pinched under the radiator so it would work for like 5 minutes until the car started building temps and then would lose signal. Pay good attention during the tear down. Make sure everything behind the dash is nice and tight or you'll get little squeeks or rattles like I did. Take your time or you'll have a bunch of stupid little kinks to work out like I did. But hey, live and learn, and I had a ton of fun doing it all... zero regrets.

(check engine light was on for a gross evap leak.. aka the gas station attendant didn't tighten the cap enough. God I wish we could pump our own gas in NJ)

Right now i've had the swap done for about 3 years.. time flies. I've just been daily driving it so far.. on a stage 2 protune + EWG dumped to atmosphere. I've been saving up parts over these years though and this car is really going to be a beast! I can't wait

(gt3076R kit, tial 44mm dumped to atmos, pe850's, grimmspeed coated/ported tgvs + thermal spacers, gruppe s header, blitz FMIC, element AOS....the list goes on)

96 Legacy GT w/ 04 WRX engine running on 02 WRX ecu/wiring.

Its the second ej20 swap ive done so it was all pretty straightforward. The 4eat wiring was a little different but nothing to crazy. The wiring is my favorite part. love it.

01rs to 04 2.0 stg 4 wrx using an 03 ecu/wiring w/utec and a vf-34. Got bored with the 2.0 now 2.5l hybrid with wiseco pistons, TD06 20G, EWG, ppg's, cusco diffs, aem ems, meth, custom intake manifold thanks to All Aspects, and pretty much everything else other than a fully built motor.

2 Lesson's Learned
1. Just because the subaru electrical wiring book says that a plug pins out a certain way doesn't mean that it really does. TGV pins on the motor harness's plug where in a different row than on the Bulkhead harness plug. I did all of my continuity and power checks by splitting it at that plug. Took forever to figure out hey these pins are in row whatever and here they are in a different one. Doh .

2. The Black/Red wires in the dash are both power and ground. Dont accidentally merge one of the grounds to one that supplies power. You will fry your ecu or Utec. Fortunately I was able to get it fixed really cheap.

I did the original swap in 2005 with a lot of help from the local guys in HR, got bored with the 2.0 and went 2.5 hyb in 07 I think. Over 50k since the original swap and still going.

did my first swap in spring of 03...it was an 02 wrx motor into a 94. I've since learned its much easier to merge obd-2 harnesses into other ob2 cars

also some of the smaller systems, cruise, abs, ac, etc...are a bit easier.

Love it and drove the car everyday for about 5 years in various states. AWD, RWD, STi 6-spd...4.11, 4.44, 3.90...factory turbo, VF39, Water injection...factory ecu, utec, link ems. It died in a car wreck Nov 07...

Now I'm doing the lazy man's route and just have a hydra that I have "minimal" wiring to deal with on the current project. Found the donor chassis Feb 08 and finally got a garage to start chipping away at it in December/January 08...hopefully it'll be getting wrapped up in the month or so.

95 L sedan to 98 V4 JDM STi

buy a clip!!! you'll kick yourself after you've spent months finding parts you didn't know were needed. i needed random differential clips, new LSD half shafts form an 02 forester, custom rad brackets(JDM's were trash), rear disc swap parts, swaybar and mount kit for non swaybar equipped L sedan, RHD>LHD wiring lengthening, and custom heater setup running the 95 blower, etc off the 98 controls......... yeah, you read that right, custom a/c grafting, custom power steering line grafting...... other stuff i can't recall!

always prepare $$ wise. if you think it's going to run you $500 for a part, plan on doubling that. time wise do the same thing, theres always parts you'll have to wait on, etc.

Talking 1997 Legacy GT w/ '05 WRX conversion

1997 Legacy GT with an '05 WRX complete conversion (not just engine/trans but also ABS, immobilizer, gauge cluster, cruise, etc) and assorted other goodies. I wish I had more time to enjoy it and am thinking about more power!

Lessons learned were that the swap will take longer and cost more than you plan for, & buying a complete running donor car is definitely the best way to go. Wiring can be fun and isn't that hard if you do your homework and take your time!

Default 1997 Legacy outback now powered with 97 JDM WRX.

Finally all put together and driving around.
Some points, in no particular order:
It took longer than I thought.
Wiring was a bit of a pain, even though I had Ritewire do a "merge" --I should have done it myself.-Get all the ECU pinouts PRIOR to buying the replacement engine, and get everything from the donor engine..
WOW it pulls way harder than I thought it would.
The stock legacy steering rack would not bolt to the 05 sti crossmember I bought, so I got an sti steering rack.. so, I had to use a combo of power steering hoses.
The clutch reservoir had to be cut down to make room for the intercooler.
With a little bit of custom plumbing I used the stock legacy radiator, and kept the stock turbo cooling reservoir, no overheating. (but I am in Canada).
The joint between the steering rack and steering column had to be made.
Everything works!.. A/C, cruise, and all that, the only thing I don't have is OBD II.
HD clutch is a must.
Turbo flywheels and stock Leggy flywheels are not the same.
The engine bay is FULL.
I kept the stock downpipe and just had a shop do the rest in 3in pipe.. not to expensive but effective.
Did I mention---WOW it pulls way harder than I thought it would?
As long as you stay away from the giggle peddle a reasonable amount, the fuel mileage is not that much different than the stock 2.5 was.
I kept the stock boost control.
The pillar pod for a 93 chev fullsize truck fits this vintage of outback reasonably well, as long as you don't mind doing a little cutting of the pillar pod.
That little hood scoop looks so much better when you know there is an intercooler under it .nobody expects anything from an old outback wagon... SURPRISE!!!
Legacy tie rods and STI tie rods are different.
Would I do it again?.. YES!! In a flash..
contact me if you have any questions.
