Default New tire time for 04 sti....help me decide...

Ok stock tires have 26,000 miles on them and it is time to start looking into new tires. My Dad owns a tire store and I work there. I drive the car everyday, goes to track, not really concerned with wet performance as long as they are ok like the stock potenza's. So I've come down to two...the BFG g-force t/a kd and a tire that suprised me with it's ratings for the tread design it has, the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 . Not sure which one I want to get. Looking for something with the same or better dry traction as the stock tires, but quieter, the bfg is noisier than the goodyear but the bfg is probably quieter than the stock tires so thats fine. For the price of the re070's I think either of these tires will be a good choice of a better tire but not near the cost.

Goodyear or Bfg? The best size to go with? Why and why not if you decide to answer...thanks

forget about quiet MAX perfornamce tires.
The re070's grip VERY well.
the GS-D3's have a rather soft sidewall---methinks ya'd be with them.
The kd's have been known to be(and become) VERY LOUD

SOOOoooooooo.....

falken 615's

Uncle scotty...I know none of the tires are going to be quiet but the one thing with the re070's that I hated was the almost mud terrain sound they had, like paddle tires or something. yes tires were rotated, they had this sound when they were new.

That Falken looks pretty interesting, have any more info than what i could find on the site? Like a better picture or something?

Yokoham Neova AD07 - better dry and wet traction than the RE070's and the BFG - much quieter than either as well. Tested against the BFG here and won handily:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...neova_ad07.jsp

It is the best dry-cornering street tire that TireRack has ever tested, competed well against the Falken ST615 in a test of shaved street tires in Grassroots Motorsports, and also tested best in the dry in a recent Car&Driver street tire test- where it beat the GSD3 among others - GSD3 was best in the wet, however. Not likely as quiet as the GSD3, but considered quiet for its type. Also has a stiffer sidewall than the other two - good since you're coming off the all time champ in that area, the RE070.

Unfortunately, the 17x7.5 stock wheels on the '04 STI will only support the stock size 225/45x17 in the Yokohama. The benefit of the Falken ST615 is that it comes in 245/45x17 and that would be the largest tire you could fit on that wheel in terms of width - the taller size would also be a benefit for the gearing of the STI 6-speed.

For street driving I'd take the Neova's, but for the track the ST615 in 245/45x17 would get the nod. If you went to a 17x8.5 wheel I'd say go with the 255/40x17 Neovas...

the azenis 615's look pretty nice, and for $480 shipped you cant beat the price. http://edgeracing.com/tires/2254517/

Anybody use the 615's yet? They are looking good and seam reasonably cheap, Not that price matters much cuz I'll check them tomorrow at work and check the falken price with my other shop that gives me stuff for what they pay for it. Maybe even call falken themselves up and become a dealer. That $480 shipped is good tho.

I'll check on the neova's too, the $180 rack site price isn't cool but Like I said, i don't pay that anyway Looks like the tires I picked out aren't going to be what I thought they might be....

Thanks, I'll do some investigating tomorrow...If possible to find tire in 245/45-17 that would be best choice for me? If I can't i'll just check stock size.

The Kumho MX has done very well for me. Good grip and a lighter tire. No real difference in noise, but for the difference in price you can get some Dynamat or a bigger stereo to reduce the road noise.

I really liked the MX's, as well......they were not available locally, when I needed new tires(that day)....i bought the RT215's, and then the price increased and I bought the Z212's to replace those.

There is one BIG thing that the MX's DO NOT do that I LIKE....and that is that they did NOT squeal like a pig under hard cornering....the did 'squeak' or 'chirp' a bit....but no squeal like the Z212's

I ran the 615s this summer, in 245/45-17 on my WRX.
i had to roll the rear fenders to clear 'em but god damn did they stick good.
grip like no tomorrow, even on a fully stock wrx. i even surprised my evo school instructor with their wet grip.

he sat next to me going into a slalom, and just said, "too fast, your going to spin." i just grinned and kept my foot in it. end of the run he just said. "Nice. what tires are these?"

ehh I don't want to have to do that. Will 245/45-17's fit without problem on a stock 2004 sti suspension and with these wheels - roja LT5. offset is +42 and I had to use a small spacer up front to clear the calipers. I may just get the stock size so i don't have to mess with making stuff fit.

....making the wrong wheels fit is way too much 'messing with', IMO

The use of the spacer was no problem at all up front, it can easily be taken off and it's fine, rolling the fenders can't easily be fixed. Thats what I meant as far as messing with stuff to make it fit.

Will this size work without body/frame/strut/control arm modification?
