Default More Dyno Charts...continuous thread...

Location: Innovative Tuning. Buffalo, NY 14216
Elevation: ~700 feet above sea level
Dyno Info: Mustang AWD 500 SE
Baseline hp/tq for a stock on same dyno: 195-200 whp for 2008-9 STI 2.5L
Add 22-23% to our dyno numbers to get Airboy wheel power numbers.

If anyone is hanging on the fence wondering whether a custom tune is worth it or not, I think these charts from today are pretty telling.

And in case you're wondering how low this dyno reads, this is enough power to run low/mid 11's with 12X traps:

The psi is set to roughly 24.5 but it fluctuates between 24 and 25 during the pull.

Here is this tune(same tune on the graph above) in action last summer at the track (potenza street tires)

11.44 @ 125.53

Thanks. I've been road tuning AWD cars for years since we used to have a 2WD dyno. Since people were used to no numbers at all I see no reason to start using inflated ones.

The stock cars we've run seem to put out a good amount less than the same stock setup on other Mustang dynos. I don't know if that's because that's just the way ours happens to read or if the other guys are inflating their numbers some so they're not as low.

The funny part is that 2WD cars read considerably closer to Dynojet numbers, than the AWD cars do. I'd say probably within 5-10% vs. 18-20% for AWD.

I haven't run an 06 WRX with downpipe and no tune on the dyno yet, so I thought the 08 WRX with downpipe and no tune would be the best comparison to show the gains from tuning this car.

Here's an 04 STI with FP Green at 19-20 psi. The tune is a bit soft because the turbo seals are pushing oil and I don't want the oil that's getting in the combustion chamber making it knock before the turbo gets rebuilt.

We'll have to see what's going on with this one. I'm guessing we have a boost leak to hunt down. The power oscillation that goes with the boost changes aren't noticeable on the street, but you can see here that something is up.

And this was funny. I tried to finish tuning a Supra we built on race gas. The 335 wide tires were having nothing of it. It spun so hard we got this readout:

Mike -

Have you had the chance to do a baseline for stock STi's?

P.S. Thanks for the donation you gave the CNY board

You're quite welcome! The 08 STI graph posted before/after tuning is the only stock STI we've had on the dyno so far.

Some graphs from today...

Aggressive stock turbo STI tune on 93+meth.

04 WRX with STI shortblock, HTA68 at 18-19 psi, larger TMIC (getting SUPER hot during pullls), ported manifolds, catless uppipe, turbo back exhaust, upgraded BCS.

Thanks!!!

The following car continues to have an extremely consistent and unique boost oscillation while on the dyno. We tested a few different manual boost controllers on it yesterday which all resulted in the same curve. There are no leaks in the vac. lines and under 17 psi the boost doesn't oscillate. I was happy to see that on the street it barely oscillates at all and you can't feel it.

Same tuned stage 2 compared to a stock 08 STI:

Is that really 6.9 AFRs across the board on your first graph?

That's what it reads when there's no AFR input and I forget to turn that channel off for graphing.

im looking to get a sti block and have this same set up but a fmic instead....right now with my vf39 i made 270 whp and 245 wtq so if i swapped block and turbo i would only get these slight increases ??? just wondering cauz i need some research before i invest in doing this same set up

You can't compare numbers from two different dynos. 270 whp on that dyno may be 100 or 400 on mine. There's no way to know.

FMIC's help a lot in real world conditions, but you can make a TMIC look real good on a dyno when there's a fan on it so it's hard to say what that will do for you on the dyno. There's an inverse relationship between heat and power so better cooling will maintain greater power while actually driving out on the road. I did a write up including the calculations to figure out power gains/losses via charge cooling a while back which you can probably find via search. I think I called it "how intercoolers make you power" or something of that nature.

I tuned a bunch of non Subarus towards the end of the week and then road tuned 8 Subarus on a tuning trip over the weekend so I just have this one new graph for now. I got a bit aggressive with the AFR to make sure it wouldn't knock if it got a bit lean as this car is used for lapping, then backed it down a bit.

And since it's going to be tracked on a big course (Calaboogie) I did a 35 mph 3rd through 5th gear with high load on the dyno to test for knock under harsh conditions. Here's a video:
