Anyone selling a decent condition GC that runs ok? Sister needs a car - its her first car. Dont care about mileage, doesnt have to be manual or auto, either is fine. So long as it runs and is cheap, let me know. looking to buy between now and october.

Has anyone here used a plastic headlight restoration kit? I used a meguiar's kit on my wife's corolla and it worked great but after only a few weeks its tinting yellow again. I had used some 3M plastic polish and a buff-ball on my saabaru with pretty similar results.
Is there a good clear coating I can put on after the polishing that will make it last longer or prevent the hazing? I've seen some kits that have an after-coating but have no idea what it is or how to get that separately. Obviously, I used regular car wax and that's not enough. Or do I just polish the lights every 3-6 months or so until I wear holes in them? I think they are like 40 bucks at rock auto so that's another option I guess. But that solution isn't going to be so pretty when it's the V's turn after a few pittsburgh winters. |

Jason and I had this conversation at the last meet, and we both agreed an automotive clear coat after sanding works best. That is what the oem lights have on them, it has a uv inhibitor, which is why they last longer than the wax. I found a two part rattle can (2k clearcoat) on eastwoods website, i think it had uv inhibitor, i havent been able to try it. If you google the 2k clearcoat spray can i think it will pop up. http://www.eastwood.com/spray-max-2k...ontent_reviews Last edited by slowgenius; 09-17-2013 at 09:17 PM. |

I've been using UPOL clear #1 recently. Super nice clear coat from an aerosol. Little pricey at $21 a can though

Im not 100% but i know it peels off in spots and rocks chip it off. Its some kind of paint, and i know jason said he has used automotive clear on lights.

Probably like anything, it's all in the prep. I'm not sure any aerosol is going to dry and harden like a real automotive coating though. I think the paintscratch clear is really expensive too. I got bumper stuff though, I know the primer and paint are for soft plastic painting. I wonder which is better to clear a headlight - Metal clear or flexible bumper clear?

I was hoping there was something like a wipe-on chemical hardener for a smooth sanded plastic surface. Like a real product. Something would have to work. Unless they really just hit it with clearcoat.
Seems to me that there has to be a caustic materials-based chemical solution beyond the obvious. What the hell do chemical engineers do anyway? Gotta be up to something. |

really? I did one off and one on on by bugeye and it was so much easier on the car because the car did a great job of holding it stead against semi hard pressure from the drill. The only scary thing is getting near the edges, even taped off it was a bit uneasy.

Your best bet if painting them is to use a 2 part urethane clear. A 2 part clear is activated by a catalyst, where an aerosol is not actually activated to harden but only air dry. I have done many headlights including my saabaru by wet sanding with 800, 1200, 2000 then buffing. Using a compound, then glaze with a high speed buffer. This gets them like new but will eventually fade in about 8-12 months. I simply hit them with a buffer again to rejuvenate them....I tape them off to protect the hood/bumper/fenders from burning any edges with the buffer.

Not sure what that stuff is made of or how it handles heat. I did yellow vinyl overlays on the saabaru fogs and they turned brown and got brittle and would never come off. Any overlay I fear would end up worse and harder to correct than just re-buffing the headlight every 6 months
