Default 96 EJ22 swap into impreza l or rs??

Please dont bash me. Im a junior in high school and am working on my senior project. I pulled out a ej22 from a 96 legacy wagon and was wondering if i can drop it into an impreza l or rs without any major problems(harness,ecu,etc.).

Sounds like fun, but don't bump a thread under a few hours. Sometimes it takes people a while to respond. This isn't IM or Text.

The ej22 should bolt right in to any 93-01 impreza with no problems. The wiring should all match up. If its the turbo ej22 then the wiring and other things may be different.

What?

No, just no.

The RS is going to have an EJ25 in it so a 22 will be a downgrade (and no, the wiring does not "just match up")

An Impreza will likely already have the EJ22 in it (some had an EJ18, but the 22 is almost as gutless)

Wiring wise you can make it work, however all the sensors have to match the ECM and the harness.

So you would use the harness, sensors and ECM already in the vehicle and swap the engine out. You may have to change the cam and crank gears so the sensors send the proper signals to the ECM.

All told, why? If you are going to do a swap either do a turbo (EJ20X, EJ25X or EJ22-t) or a 2.5 into an Impreza L. If you are on a budget you can do a "frankenstein build" (EJ25 block with EJ18/22 heads)

EJ22T heads are basically the same, except you have a (bolted on) port for the oil return (or is it the feed line?) for the turbo.

WRX heads will need a complete re-wire, might as well just swap a WRX engine at that point.

Do not bother with the 2.2 at all if you want to make a franken motor go with a 2.5 block and use 2.2 heads it gives you a higher compression rate. Plus then you have more upgrade options of the 2.5 block.
I am swapping a 2.5 into my 2.2 going with cams headers and an intake and that should be enough with the lighter impreza frame to make the kind of power I need. The 2.2 does not have as many options as the 2.5 does.

As far as the EJ22, they come in many different flavors:

1989-1995 (early) non interference, hydraulic lash adjusters in the heads, dual port heads , piston style timing tensioner, about 135 crank hp

1995 (late) non interference (I think), solid lash adjusters, dual port heads, piston style timing tensioner, 135 chp

1996-1998 (early) interference, solid lash adjusters, single port heads, piston style timing tensioner, 138 chp

1998 (late) to 2001: interference heads, solid lash adjusters, single port heads (?), hydraulic roller timing tensioner, 142chp.

That said, the idea of swapping one 2.2 into another is silly. If you know the 2.2 you have is good, swapping it into a 2.5 Outback that puked it's head gaskets is a good option. Also, building a frankenmotor (2.5 block/2.2 heads) is the route I went and am making near stock 2.0 WRX power; though I have a lot of time and money into my build. Sheer cool points would be swapping it into a VW of some kind; bonus points if it was air cooled.

You could actually do a pretty cool build using the ej22t SB as the basis of your build. If you current car is running and doesn't need a new motor, I would look into the built motor section for 22T builds and start building that motor over the next couple years with what ever spare funds you come across.
