With the same car? I have a cobb ap, i would like to compete in stx and unlimited at the same auto-x. I plan on having azenis on my stock wheels and running cobbs stx map for stx and for unlimited ill run stg 2 plus my volks with r-comps...is it possible/legal to register for two different classes at the same auto-x?

Not normally. You'll have to look at the rules of your local series, or talk to the responsible people, and see if they might allow it. But typically you can only run competitively in one class. In our region, we allow people to take a second set of runs (for a second entry fee and a second work assignment), but those runs get scored in a FUN class, and there are no points or trophies for that class.

Depends on the event and sanctioning body.

Here in SFR SCCA, what would happen is this :
  1. If it is a HEAVY day as far as turnout, forget it. No second run cards sold. This is at the discretion of the event chairs
  2. If #1 isn't true, you can buy a second run card.
  3. Only the FIRST runs you take for the day count. Second ones are fun runs. This means that if you are competing (for series points) in STX, you'd be in luck if STX runs first that day and SM (or other class) runs later. If STX is the last run group of the day (or later than the group where you'd want to run), then you WILL NOT be able to run STX for series points that day.
  4. If you run during 2 separate groups, you also have to WORK during 2 separate groups. Skip EITHER of those work assignments, and ALL of your runs are scored "DNW" (disqualified) for the day. Obviously, this means you'll need to pick your "fun runs" work group so that you aren't working during your STX runs (and vice versa).

it would be unfair to your competitors if you had already participated in a session before them. ain't gonna happen. fun runs, or "time only" as we call it, is just fine though, simply compare your times to with the class you wanted to run with.

The only issue I could see is that you'd be out twice as much as everyone else. Corner working can usually be substituted for setting up and/or tearing down, if you get the people running the show to agree to that deal.

talk to the event staff. I'm the event chair at our events sometimes, and if someone was willing to work twice and pay for 2 run heats, and if the 2nd set was either DSQ'd for competition purposes, I wouldn't have any problem with it.
