I think we tend to make the jump that street tires are like race tires, They are not.
Partick did get me thinking about why or how the Lambo's and 930's, etc... don't loose it on the on ramp?
I found a good discussion here:
http://www.autocross.us/forums/index.php?showtopic=4410
AutoXers don't have the luxury of warm tires or prepared surfaces.

I'm not saying 12's are the way to go or even if they will fit, just that if the narrow tire/temp way of thinking were correct then why do the super cars run super wide street tires instead of super sticky 185's?

PooK (love a good discussion!)

^^^my home auto-x website...of course I stopped auto-xing far too long ago. The tire debate can go on for a long time and can be argued from either side but you ultimately need to put numbers down. Your tire size and mandated offset, will also start effecting your scrub radius, which I think is a very important factor in a mid engine, non-power steering chassis. With that being said, I'm curious what the SAI is on those upright?

You'll probably find better and more relevant discussion with FSAE.com

That first question 'as an engineer...' makes me giggle.

The SAI is 7.5deg. Caster is VERY adjustable.
Here is some footage of the prototype running an autoX down south.
Im told to cut him some slack it was the first time out with the car...and that you know its him running when you can hear the engine over the music...LOL!

I Worked a bit on the brake lines and rear walls.

Do whatever will prevent surface rust down the road (like a motorcycle build) as we discussed.

Also, get me a list of the stuff I need to purchase for you like brake bias, s.f. of carbon fiber wrap, etc and I'll get it all coming your way.

Got something coming in the mail to you next week too.

You had mentioned the NT-01 as an option. I've run those on track on my CTS-V and would say they're closer to an extreme performance summer tire than they are to the A6.

But yes, a sticky auto-x tire would allow you to get away with running a larger tire.

The fact that they weigh 2x as much and are powered by monster engines plays into that. And, as you pointed out, street tires and race tires don't always behave the same.

I think a better question might be why aren't cars like the Ariel Atom or Caterham 7 sold with 10" or 12" wide wheels with 315s?

But anyway... Back to the construction pics!! Hope the pony comes through the mail OK.

I had considered the NT-01 but then thought I'd better dig aroung for a tire that wouldn't be as sensitive to temps.

I don't see any of the other owners of exocars posting up these large wheel/tire sizes, but then again none of them have 400hp at the wheels either.

I know that is a totally different calculation though as our point here is vehicle weight vs tire size/width. I wish there was some sort of formula that I could plug in the variables of my car to determine my options but I can't find anything anywhere.

I just posted a question on eng-tips.com under the automotive wheel/tire forum to see if I can gain some additional insight.

Sure, I admit I want the wheels/tires to look really cool , but not at the expense of slipping around and being a fool

Has any of the linkage for the shifter been fabbed yet? I'm curious to see how this will be tackled.

I'm also curious exactly how strong that front diff is. The other trans for these types of configs (audi a/porsche g) are SO $$! Would be awesome if it holds up to the rigors of this setup.

Check out WWW.cableshift.com its just one of a few companies doing this now, the suby gear box converted to 2wd has already proven itself in everything from conversions to off road.
I'm going to look into building our own on Marty's car, Erik (the first TR-42S) built his own as well as his own block off plate to shorten the transaxle.
The good news is the parts are out there if we need them.

Here is version 2 of my shifter setup. I haven't worked on the car in quite a while so I figured I could upload this video of my work from a couple of months ago.

Default 16" wheels?

Danny - just curious, would a 16" wheel clear the brakes or does it need to be 17"

Hand a long talk with the main guy at CCW Wheels in FL today about tire sizes, temps and weight of the car.

He noted that the Arial Atom 500 V8 only has staggered tire sizes of 205/50-15 and 245/45-16 with a weight under 1500lbs.

My guess is that I'll come in at under 1800lbs.

He felt a shorter tire would certainly help with traction by enabling the tire to heat up and maintain temps. As others here have suggested, he said there was no way he'd put anything larger than maybe a 275 as a stretch with more comfort at a smaller 255. He felt an 18" 315 would be impossible to heat up even on long highway runs, even if it was a Hoosier A6.

He also said I'd need to consider the visuals to make sure a 16" wouldn't take away from the car and that I could stay at 17" if necessary.

So I was thinking (outloud) this option -

JLine 2 piece forged 5L2 wheels in 16x8 and 17x9.5 (all matte black) with Toyo Proxes R888 tires in 245/45-16 and 275/40-17

Much better this morn! Now he's just ticked he had to miss trick or treat

Marty, the 16s will be close on the brakes, I'll be into the shop Wednesday with a hub and your wheels, I'll bring a 16 from Bill's trike with me.
The Solstice came with 18s.....but maybe?

Erik, fantastic work on the shifter! I noticed on v2.0 you turned the bell crank vertical, does it seem to work better that way?

Another thing on your bell crank method Erik, most are still routing the left/right cable in from 90deg, this cleans that up! By re drilling the bell crank can you control the throw ratio?
Kind of a short shift done easy!?

I will probably give it another go after I get the car up and running. But yes if I change the bell crank I can shorten up the side to side of the shifter. I really like how it came out, very compact.

OK Ill try to put this is some order and show "LOOKS" as well
First pic: 17x9 with 42mm running 255/40
NOTE: forgot the rotor so the "LOOK" is 5mm off not my measurements.
NOTE: the rack wont let the car get to ride height so it looks tall.

Same tire with 30mm less or about 12mm

17x8 with 48mm running 235/45

Same wheel/tire less 30mm or approx 18mm

8's and 9's with Proper offset

a 16...LOL! lets not go there

Default Progress!!!!!!!

Nice!

After our chat today it looks like I may have my alternate set of wheels/tires choosen! Gonna have to sell some blood but nothing beats a custom made set of forged 3-piece wheels from a well known and reputable company.

If everything goes right they should arrive at Danny's shop in a few weeks, just in time to be used to properly size the handmade fenders.
