Only WRX and STI get the electroluminescent gauges where the needle is white. 2.5i and OBS get the regular light bulb version (with needle red).

I have the blue ones. Its a simple plug n' play thing. not noticeable from outside. if you get pulled over, just dim the dash all the way. just follow the directions that come with the kit. can't beat the sexy lights for 37 bucks.

What's the hardest part of the install? I'm debating if I should have the dealer do mine.

The hardest part is running the wires from the cubby hole to the footwells. I ran the wires with out removing the radio, and it just requires a little patience. Overall it is really easy. The kit provides all the mounting hardware and adequate instructions. Then all you have do do is plug in the wires.

Silly question - are these gauges really electroluminescent? Cause they look a lot like they're LED-backlit to me (not that they don't look awesome and bright).

holy crap, don't do this unless you have the 3/8" wrench. I didn't remember to mount the driver's above the trim panal, so now I can't get it off and it's like 1/5th of the way screwed in. my fingers are bleeding from trying to unscrew the nut.
it seems like a simple install job though. |

Ok, went back and had the wrench- mounting the lights is not so bad, I would say it's 1/5 on the easy scale but it's still very annoying if you dont have small hands.
Feeding the wires is also annoying, but it's more chance if you can feed it through the first shot- Overall it should take about 30 min to an hour depending on how much you struggle with feeding the wires. |

So do the footwells stay on when the car is in motion like the cubby hole LED or are the footwells only activated when you open the door?

Installed! (Lots of pics)
Took a bit longer than anticipated, since, naturally, I screwed up a bit. I performed the installation on my '09 OBP 5-door WRX:
My car: First off, a big thanks to Ben at Hodges Subaru for getting the kit out to me, and at a great price. I ordered: H201SS100 - Subaru Red LED Interior Illumination Lamp Kit 66237SA120 Lamp Pocket (red cubbyhole LED)1 The illumination kit came with a wiring harness, driver and passenger LED modules, instructions, and a bunch of washers, nuts and bolts for the installation. Tools you'll need: philips screwdriver, and 3/8" wrench (I used a crescent). ALSO, a FLASHLIGHT to help shine some light on the underside when you're trying to wire the harness. That's probably the toughest part, since there are some small spaces and plenty of spots for the wires to get stuck. First, I popped off the blue cubbyhole LED - this is where you will wire everything in. It comes right off in its retainer. The blue cubbyhole LED (left), and the new red LED (center). Duh. The LED modules pop on and off the retainer (right) The driver's side LED module. It's actually very well constructed - the whole thing is sealed in epoxy. I'm not sure why, maybe it's rated for deep-sea use. First thing I did was connect the new LEDs to the wiring harness, and connect the harness to the cubbyhole power, to make sure everything worked. |

Installed (cont)
Next step was to install the LED modules. I started with the driver side. The instructions suck hard, there's no text at all. But you can figure it out. Here's where the drivers side LED attaches.
I'm impressed that the kit came with nylock nuts! You have to work the nut/bolt/washers by feel, and then hold the bolt steady with the wrench while tightening the nut/screw with the philips. Here's the driver's side LED installed. Here's the passenger side location. Note that the instructions have this part BACKWARDS. You want to install the stem BEHIND this hole, with the LED away from you. Here's where it should go (the wires should be tucked up behind the edge): Passenger side installed. Next step is to thread the harness. The easiest way is to pass the harness one side at a time through the cubbyhole...hole. If you have small hands, you can actually reach from under the steering wheel and pull the harness through. Driver's side. Driver's side connected. Testing driver's side. This is where the flashlight saved me. I mis-threaded the passenger side and it got STUCK, between the metal support and the center console. REALLY stuck. I thought I would have to remove the entire console to get the console out (and I don't know how to do that). I ended up taking the glove compartment off (which didn't help much). But I was able to stick my head by the pedals and trace the harness with the flashlight, and after an hour or so got it freed and routed correctly. |

Last up, make sure the cubbyhole LED is connected to the harness, and in its retainer.
Once everything is hooked out, test everything out before you clean up the wiring and ziptie it off. Success! Now, zip tie the slack in the harness to whatever is nearby, and you're done! Finally, a few more pictures of the completed install. Oops, cubbyhole LED was still out on this one. Note that the LEDs are really QUITE dim. The pics are bright but fuzzy cause some of them are 2-3 second exposure times. It's a really subtle effect, and not really noticeable when driving. In fact, I kinda wish it was just a bit brighter. But I haven't tried them in complete darkness yet, so maybe they're just right. Overall, a pretty easy, relatively cheap mod. I love the uniform red glow in the cabin! |

Any idea where to get this from, don't want to go through dealership since they'll probably mark-it up here in hawaii. |

I ordered mine from Ben over at Hodges Subaru in Michigan. It was $11.36 (discounted from $19 retail) plus shipping.

i just got some led strips from a Chinese seller on ebay. A pair of 24 leds each in red flexible strip for 4 bucks. Ran the wires to the cubby, looks amazing, definitely a lot brighter and a nicer red than the factory illumination kit.
I will post pictures very soon. Unfortunetely my cubby light is still blue. It doesnt bother me, adds some contrast but I will probably change it to red. |

That's freaking sweet. I'm lookin' to do that in my '08 2.5i. They have it on SubaruGenuineParts.com (https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/p...oducts_id=1492) but I'm gonna see if the dealership can give me a discount or something. It's a long shot, but why not, haha. They also have the red kit at (https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/p...oducts_id=1493).
Thanks for the pics, Dartholomew! |

Ive had these 3 LEDs per side wired into my footwells for a year or so now, I tapped the power off the wire in the door that goes on whenever the door is opened- the clearance light... cost me about 6 dollars for the LED's but I have a ton left over.....
simple wiring, not hard at all. anyone could do this in any car |
