Default OT Runners: How do you motivate yourself to run first thing in the morning?

i went to bed early last night with the assumption that i would get up at 6:30 and run for an hour then head to work.

i did wake up at 6:30, but then went back to sleep til 7:15. now i'm faced with running in 100 degree heat or wait until 9:30 at night.

i need to get into the routine of running at the ass crack of dawn. what's your advice?

I've tried this so many times and just came to the conclusion that I'm simply not a morning runner. So, I run in the evenings.

I think the key is just making the decision that you're going to do it. It's all in your head, obviously. You just have to do it.

But, I can't tell you how many times I've done the exact same thing you just described!!

you just have to force yourself to get up. lay all your stuff out the night before. lay out socks, shoes, shorts, shirt...everything!

i'm usually up at 5:30am and out running by 5:45am. when i have early meetings in the city, i'm up at 4:30am and running by 4:45am.

I've heard that a new activity becomes a habit after a month or so.

That being said I have never ever been a morning person.

just ask yourself this:

not fat or be fat, that is the question.

in my case: no boobs or manboobs, thats the question. typically that makes my get out the door.

i just started running about a month ago after a 2 yr vacation. i want to keep pushing myself but im experiencing old man knee pain and its to damn hot.

also, knowing that it'll be sooooo much hotter in the evening is a pretty good motivator in getting me out the door in the morning.

The same thing has happened to me on countless mornings.....just not meant to be. Besides, I find I'm much more motivated to work out after a 'relaxing' day at the office.

Yep, there is no way I can run in the morning so I do it after work.

It gets really stupid hot here so I've been doing most of the longer runs on the treadmill.

I don't run because I an ishty knee and ankle but I ride my bike. I can't ride in the morning either so I just wait until it starts to cool off to ride. My motivation to go the mental picture of my 60 yr. old boss climbing Mt. Rainer and dozens of other mountains. If he can do that, my 25 yr. old fatass can get out there and crank out a few miles on a bike.

the problem with running in the evenings is it's still 85-90 degrees and humid as hell this time of summer. if i only needed to go out for 20-30 minutes i could stick it out in the heat.

i'm going to run tonight then tomorrow morning. seriously. i'll report back on wether or not this actually happens.

Not be a bitch? Set your alarm clock, when it goes off, get out of your bed and start stretching. You determine if you are a "morning" or "afternoon" runner based off your run times, but even that has conditioning based on how you train. If you always ran in the afternoon, working out the in mornings will be difficult until you stop being a bitch and run in the mornings. Eventually your morning run times will approach your evening times and you will be okay.

I've found I can't really run in the mornings simply because I've got nothing in my system. I'm stuck running in the evenings because at least then I've been eating and I'm not going to pass out.

Also, I'm not a morning person, at all.

I know what you mean. It is hotter but it is a good workout. You'll sweat like a mofo. I've been drinking 50-60 ounces of water in a 15 mile ride on my mountain bike and I'm sure I sweat it all back out.

I always do the same thing. Set my alarm for 6 then hit snooze til 7. But personally I prefer running in the sweltering heat than force myself to run in the morning. Guess old habits from college lacrosse have me used to working out in the afternoon.

We played in a tournament the other day and had 4 back to back games on Saturday in 95+ heat. Now that was fun.

its just so much nicer to run in the mornings. this past week, there was one day that i was steaming a bit when i came back from running. it was THAT cool out.

as said abover, yes. once you do something for about a month straight, it becomes a habit.

there's actually a small group of people that i see out running/walking every morning. its kinda nice to see the same people every morning. they're also like 30 years older than myself.

I tried doing this for a while, but I have to get up a bit before 5 so it doesn't happen too often. It is easier to do when it's light out. Sometimes in the winter I find it is almost warmer out in the morning before the wind kicks up.

It can also be helpful if you're meeting someone for a run. That way neither of you will want to leave the other person waiting and so you both have to show up.

That's why I won't do more than about 5 miles outdoors right now. Any longer than that and I'm on the treadmill.

28 days to a new habit.

I have to run in the mornings to avoid the heat as well. I ran at 5:30am yesterday, ran with a friend. Was going to get up at 5:30 this morning to ride by myself. Didn't happen.
If you can do it, meeting someone makes it much much easier. This didn't used to be an option for me, but luckily I've met a few people recently that I can train with.

Its a struggle to do it by yourself, but really try doing it for a few weeks and it will get easier.

running long distances on treadmills is exceedingly annoying.

once my alarm goes off, i hit the button and get my stuff on.

plus, running really early is extra nice due to the lack of traffic on the roads. i'll belt out 3 miles in the morning and not see more than 4 cars.

Also, buy yourself some toys to play with. New shoes, clothes, watch, HR monitor. Something to look forward to in the morning.

I always sort of like the fact that running doesn't require much beyond some shorts, shoes and socks.
I don't even use a watch most of the time anymore. Of course if I were training for something I might wear one but even then only once in a while.
