Post Michelin's Laurens Proving Grounds & Tire Info for Hydroplaning Resistance

Saw a good article on the european side of Sport Compact Car.

Talks quite a bit about the various tracks and drivers at Laurens.
Some will probably like the info on the various tracks and the aerial photo of the site since there's a Suby only race event on the black lake track.

http://www.europeancarweb.com/tech/0302ec_contactpatch/

Of note in the article is a paragraph mentioning where to put your newer tires (greatest tread depth) if you are only replacing two tires on a car...

2nd paragraph after the Mixability heading:

"It is best to replace tires four at a time, but if replacing only two, always put the new ones on the back, whether the car is fwd or rwd. With less tread depth on the rear, the rear will hydroplane first in water. "

Think about it a bit, would you rather have potentially massive oversteer come on very quickly (full tread depth tires on front)? Or would you rather have understeer (full tread depth tires on back) where you can feel the grip lessen and simply let off the gas by instinct to correct for the hydroplaning/understeer?

Experiencing this with back-to-back tests in duplicate cars with full tread depth tires on the front vs rear makes it a very educational moment. Nothing like the back end of the car passing you with virtually no advance warning!

Same applies to snow tires: If buying only 2, put them on the back wheels otherwise the back end will keep snapping in a nasty way...
