Default So I just found out I need hand surgery tomorrow...Weekend warriors be careful!

I play in a regular flag football game with friends every Saturday of football season for the past few years. Nothing too serious, nobody trying to hurt anyone, everybody has to go to work on Monday...

Well this past Saturday while reaching for a flag my left thumb (I'm a righty) caught on the ball carrier's hip bone and bent back towards my wrist (hyperabducted) in a very unnatural way. Instantly heard a pop and knew we had a problem.

Fast forward to today, I went to see the hand surgeon, he took some X-rays. Sat down to examine the thumb and in two seconds told me I needed surgery. The MCP joint at the base of the thumb is very unstable. So tomorrow I go in to have the ulnar collateral ligament of my left thumb repaired. If it's really shredded he's going to have to graft in a tendon from my wrist.

No surgery for me for 6 weeks.

Oh.

Joy.

Go enjoy yourselves in your annual football game. Just be careful, because these things happen all the time. Pics before/after incoming.

Tendon grafts can be painful, do NOT rush recovery. Trust me.

Neek, are you a doc or something?

because, if not, then the part where you say:

"Need hand surgery tomorrow"

and the part where you say

"No surgery for 6 weeks"

are a bit contradicting.

I'll let you practice left-handed eye surgery on me so you're not out for 6 weeks. I have no need for one of my eyes.

Yeah I'm a pediatric ophthalmologist...surgeon. Sorry for the confusion.

No I didn't get him. I suck. However I did finish the series because I was in denial about how bad the injury seemed to be, that and I'm a dumb ass.

Here's a before:

Yep. Own Occupation too so if I can't do surgery but can still see patients in the office...it pays.

However I should still be able to do surgery after six weeks.

Update:

Out of surgery. I apparently really shredded the ligament, but no graft necessary. On percocets. Will update with pics after this big giant "mitt" comes off. This post took way too long to make, with one hand...and the percs.

Bummer man. I still can't bend my right index finger fully because I jabbed it into someone's arm. This happened over a year ago. I can bend it a little more each month though.

Dang Neek I had no idea you did that. Glad everything has worked out so far. How long does this set your schedule back?

As an avid racquetballer I'm just waiting for a blown knee or foot.

6 weeks until I can get back in the OR. Right now I've got a pin through my thenar MCP joint (joint at the base of the thumb for you non-bone peeps), freezing it while the ligament heals. That comes out 3 weeks post sugery.

Neat!

I got four cool little stitches yesterday, right at the side of the knuckle where your index finger meets your left hand, after losing a fight with an environmental chamber.

That **** bleeds like hell, yo!
