Default IndyCar 2010

The 2010 season kicked off today at Barber.

Quote:
Briscoe leads first day of Barber test

By Matt Beer Thursday, February 25th 2010, 00:46 GMT

Ryan Briscoe led a Penske one-two on the opening day of the IndyCar pre-season test at a chilly Barber Motorsports Park, with Justin Wilson emerging as the pacesetting team's closest challenger.

Penske would have claimed a top three sweep with Briscoe, Helio Castroneves and Will Power but for the efforts of Wilson, who pushed Power back to fourth despite a late crash.

With this week's two days at Barber the only winter group test before the season opener in Brazil, Briscoe was delighted that Penske had proved to be the team to beat.

"It's nice to be at the top of the speed charts," said Briscoe. "It's important because it is our only test before the first race, so we're all comparing times. It's nice to have the Team Penske cars on top. It's a great way to start the year."

Wilson was also pleased to run so strongly on his first appearance with new team Dreyer & Reinbold, despite his accident.

"All in all, I think that it went well and I'm pleased with P3," he said. "I'm getting comfortable in the car and with my new engineer and crew.

"Unfortunately, at the end of the day I just clipped the grass going into Turn 1 and the car snapped around on me. The car isn't too badly damaged and I'm okay."

Ganassi's Scott Dixon and reigning champion Dario Franchitti were fifth and ninth, split by KV duo EK Viso and Takuma Sato, and Tony Kanaan in the best of the Andretti Autosport cars.

While Kanaan felt he made great strides during the test day, some of his team-mates were struggling, with Ryan Hunter-Reay back in 16th as he fine-tuned his set-up on his debut with the team, and Danica Patrick troubled by the weather conditions in 18th.

Newman/Haas/Lanigan's new recruit Hideki Mutoh completed the top ten ahead of Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport) and Conquest's recent signing Mario Romancini.

KV ran a third car for former Honda Formula 1 test driver James Rossiter, with the Briton taking 13th place on his IndyCar debut. Rossiter has been linked to a third race seat with the squad, a plan KV has yet to confirm.

Three of the 2010 IndyCar squads chose to skip the test. Panther's Dan Wheldon is running at Sebring instead due to the cold weather at Barber, while new team FAZZT preferred to continue work at its Indianapolis base having successfully tested earlier in the winter. Dale Coyne Racing also sat out Barber, but ran with JR Hildebrand at Sebring last week.

Twenty drivers took to the track today, with at least one more expected to join in tomorrow when former Indy Lights champion Jay Howard takes a turn in Sarah Fisher's car. The pair are alternating in the Sarah Fisher Racing seat this year.

I wonder why Sarah Fisher is there. Isn't she only running ovals? And Justin Wilson is class.

Might be because IndyCar is paying for the test? Shes clearly not on the pace at all, but at least she has some running time in the car.

This should be an exciting year. I'm hoping Briscoe can win the championship this year. I'm also hoping for a good race at Sonoma since I'll be attending it.

Just saw an announcement that Dale Coyne has hired Milka Dunno. Thought IRL may be rid of her, but no luck. She's a rolling road block with Venezuelan oil money sponsorship.

It's embarassing, IMO. I can't believe a guy like Rahal can't get sponsorship. Maybe he can drive for the BMW team in ALMS to keep sharp this year?

Quote:
Officials of the Indy Racing League have been in discussions with Lola, Dallara Automobili, DeltaWing Racing Cars and Swift Engineering about designing, manufacturing and supplying the IZOD IndyCar Series chassis scheduled to hit the racetrack for the 2012 season.

DeltaWing, Swift Engineering and Dallara have released images of design concepts and their plans based on the league's objectives.

A fifth entrant is BAT Engineering – former Lola chief designer and Reynard North America president Bruce Ashmore, former March chief designer and engineer Alan Mertens, and longtime open-wheel racing engineer Tim Wardrop.

Its news release and images of its concept:
Three of the most successful designers in recent IndyCar history have joined forces and will look to return to the winner’s circle at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with an innovative new IndyCar design once again starting in 2012.

Bruce Ashmore, Alan Mertens and Tim Wardrop announced the formation of BAT Engineering (Bruce, Alan, Tim) and will be submitting a comprehensive proposal to the Indy Racing League as the next chapter in IndyCar racing is being written.

The BAT proposal focuses not only on creating a dynamic new competitive platform for the IZOD IndyCar Series, but it also brings an extensive plan for job creation in Indiana.

The three designers, each of whom have been part of milk-drinking outings at the Indianapolis 500, bring experience, innovation, and extensive research to the process. The opportunity to develop a clean-sheet design was one that all three principals found too exciting to pass up.

The next IZOD IndyCar Series design will bring the next chapter in the sports history by providing a safer environment for the drivers, delivering a compelling on-track racing product for the fans, and pushing the sport forward through a concentration on clean aerodynamics and high-efficiency energy use.

The BAT Engineering design has not only produced a very fast car, but it also provides the strength and structure to allow the drivers to race hard and go wheel to wheel without ending their race early. This close racing and the durability of the car design will add to the on-track spectacle and competitive format with more entries making the dash to the checkered flag.
The IZOD IndyCar Series is well-positioned to introduce a new product and take full advantage of the exciting new shows that the BAT Engineering project car will promote.

The BAT Engineering entry is the right car to help this process, and will serve as the catalyst for re-energizing the motorsports industry that surrounds the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The new design proposal will create new opportunity for the region through the design, build, and support of the next generation IndyCar. BAT Engineering’s proposal will best address each of these targets as the team puts their technical capabilities, years of experience, and design innovation on display once again.

Following meetings with renowned Indianapolis surgeon, Dr. Terry Trammell and Indy Racing League safety and technical directors Jeff Horton and Les Mactaggart to ensure maximum safety, BAT Engineering started the design process with a core consideration-driver safety.

With the very latest in Computer Aided Design and Computational Fluid Dynamics software to develop the shape and aerodynamics of the new race car, BAT Engineering is putting technology on their side for the design, and the firm has also made agreements with various software and simulations companies to most efficiently manage the modeling and pre-build testing of the entry long before it hits the pavement.

BAT’s bid is based on a program that would see the design entirely built within a 30-mile radius of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, using highly skilled American labor. Further details of the concept, which features strength, protected wheels and stable aerodynamics to ensure close racing, will be announced in the near future.

Rahal wants a one year deal, Coyne wouldn't give it to him.

If they are thinking of a new car. IMO, they already had one with the Panoz DP01. Better IMO then that old IRL chassis.

That chassis is almost four years old and looked like a reworked Lola B03/00...and it was never designed to run on ovals.

Might as well just adopt the DP09 they use for the SuperLeague series.

I'll be at Barber, at least for the practices and qualifying. The Rolex and Continental races are Saturday, so I imagine I'm probably flying out Sunday morning.

Maybe I'm not looking the right places, but IndyCar doesn't seem to get much info out ahead of time for the upcoming season and teams. I went digging around tonight and noticed Newman Haas team looks pretty dismal this year. Only one car and it's Mutoh? I'm sure he has lots of money behind him paying for the seat, but without Rahal or a similar driver, they might as well quit.
I hope Beatriz and De Silvestro hand Patrick her butt on a platter, too. It's about time they got some talented female drivers in there.
I, too, was hoping Duno was off to stock cars.
There's lots of drivers and teams listed for this year, but the quality sure drops off after about the top 6-8. I hope some of those guys get better and/or are more competitive this year, like Moraes, Meira, Marco, Conway, and Weldon.

Thats part of the reason I don't really follow it much, there just isn't the talent anymore there was 12 years ago when I seriously started following CART.

Yeah, in the early 90's I liked CART better than F1. It was really great for a few years there. Still not sure how or why it all got ruined, but that's a topic for another thread.
