Legacy Turbo Problems

If the Turbo bearings in my turbo were seized from overheating, would this prevent my engine from turning over and firing? and is there anyway to test this to see if this is the problem? I have the EJ22 in my car(1991 Turbo Legacy LS sedan) My engine overheated and blew the water pump, however I know the internals are alright cus I had a compression test done and everything is fine but my car just wont trun over, it backfires and wont start. I think i may have cooked the turbo, is there anyway i can test to see if the turbo still spins and runs??????

The turbo wouldn't prevent you from starting the car. There's something else going on there.

And don't be so sure your engine is fine just because you did a compression test. You could have blown a head gasket, cracked a head, or fried you crank and/or rod bearings.

I had a similar incident last winter when my thermostat froze and the car got hot. It seemed to be fine, but about a month later it started eating oil to the tune of 1wt per week. I knew I had a timebomb on my hands.

I sourced a new block, and did the replacement. When I cracked the case open, I found I had 3 spun crank bearing and all crank and rod bearings were scorched. The through bolts that hold the block together had gotten so hot they turned from golden to black everywhere but on their heads!!!

Legacy Thanks Matt

Im running out of ideas, I really dont want to replace the whole engine, but its looking like Ill have to do that more and more. If I find the same identical engine of which I have, Will it just bolt in or am I going to need to do some wiring harness changes or anything like that??? Will my stock ECU work also. I have a 91 Legacy Turbo LS Sedan. Thanks for your help but keep the ideas coming. Another question, if the turbo is shot, that means the turbine cant spin, which would cause there to no exhaust escape and no air intake right cus, the engine ran all the way to my house and shut down fine, then the next morning it just wouldnt start. i nursed it home which wasd only like 5 minutes away after I noticed the temp gauge, so I shut the engine down and let it coast in neutral, then started it again when i ran out of momentum, then repeated it that all the way home. I didnt add anything to the engine right away and I didnt touch anything, I shut it down and let it cool by itself. The next morning I put new spark plugs in it and it still wouldnt fire, I had it taklen to a shop where we discovered the water pump was completly shot! The pulley was right snapped off the bearing shaft.this took all the tension off my timing belt. I had a new water pump and timing belt put in, and it still wont start. with everything tightened up it just wont catch, it tries to turn over, but backfires and wont stay running, is there anything in the ECU that would prevent it from running???? Maybe it sensed the overheating and needs to be reset or something, but the more I investigate the more im leaning towards a new engine. Any help would be greatly apprecieated, I want this thing to run sooooooooooo bad. If anybody has a good source on parts too, this would be real nice, I may just need new heads or some other part instead of a whole new engine. Thanks for the help Guys. Keep on driving.

Legacy

Definately check legacycentral for this. First of all, 91 Legacy LS's did not come with turbos. Did you add a turbo to your naturally-aspirated EJ22 engine? Or did you mean to say '91 Legacy SS / Sport Sedan...?

Anyway, the legacycentral board has complete info on replacing the timing belt and ensuring you've timed the vehicle correctly. Sounds to me like it could be timing at this point, since you've had to replace the water pump and mess with the belt, which could have jumped many teeth during your drive home.

Backfire during attempt at starting = clue that timing is off. Exhaust valve open at wrong time.
