another question to add.....i read somewhere (i think it was youtube lmao) that 04-05 rex's have thicker teeth in the gears (RA thickness) so would an RA 1-3 or 1-4 be even a real upgrade? no matter what i have to keep my stock 5th for gas mileage (and some hope of top end lol).

Is the 97 Outback tranny a direct bolt in a 02/03 WRX? If not what mods need to be done? Are these trannys known to be stronger than the "glass box" trannys? Thanks,
Shawn.

I don't believe they are any stronger. However with the slightly shorter gearing compared to the WRX, it puts less strain on them. You need to change over the clutch setup to the NA tranny stuff, and change slave cylinder, and matching rear diff. The NEWEST you can put on with the speed sensor is an '04 Outback. '05+ run off the ABS sensors for vehicle speed, but you can still have it done.

i would call the dealer and ask for Service, then gear ratios for those two. Some dealers will help you, some will say that information isn't attainable. I can call my guys up on it.

Looking for some help Fuji,

Running 2.5/2.0 hybrid swap in my 02 WRX. Looking for mostly reliability. JDM STI RA gear set or LGT trans?

both of those arent bad choices. Difference would be gear spacing between those two. The LGT's gear spacing is similar to say a '00 2.5RS. The difference is that your tranny is a 3.900FD and the 2.5RS is a 4.111FD. Speed in each gear will be a tad faster in your tranny than a 2.5RS. The STi RA gearset you'll notice a taller 1st gear, which you may find helpful because you can get a bit more speed before shifting into 2nd for daily driving. After 1st gears, spacing is much shorter making acceleration much better, but note that 5th gear is a .825 ratio on a 3.900FD, which will have higher revs than stock; my JDM 6spd is a .842 with a 3.900FD.

Anyone know the gear ratio and final drive ratio on a 07 jdm ver 7 sti tranny? I could only find them up to 06. Also can someone explain to me the 3.9 final drive in the front and 3.54 fd on the rear of the 02 wrx? When you calculate speed/rpm which final drive do you use? Thanks

^^ the mechanical FD will equate to 3.9 because of the center diff. between the THREE diffs the FD will calculate to 3.90:1

I'm not sure if the JDM STi changed to a 3.545FD for the rear diff like what the USDM did for the '07 JDM STi's.

But ratios are the same and they still rev to 8000rpms
3.636 / 2.375 / 1.761 / 1.346 / 1.061 / 0.842

The USDM STi that runs the 3.545FD rear diff uses a step up gear transfer gear with a ratio of 1.1:1. You take this 1.1:1 multiply it by 3.545 and you come REALLY close to 3.900; which is 3.8995.

The rear diff with the FD ratio of 3.545 DOES spin slower than the 3.900FD of the same wheel speed. Wonder if they did this to reduce bearing wear and less heat???

Wow.. This thread has shed a lot of light on things about gearing that I really didn't understand. Thanks Fuji.

-Is there a confirmed correct list of rear diff ratios somewhere that's easy to access?
Thanks for any help

assuming 225/45/17 tires, with 4.11 fd...

3k rpm with .738 5th = ~73mph

3k rpm with .825 5th = ~65mph

that doesnt sound too bad i guess. hell with the stock 3.90 FD i can cruise at around 80mph at around 2800-3k rpm (w/225/40/18's)

It's really not that bad at all. I have .738 5th with 4.44 fd and 3k rpm = 68mph. That is the slight downside, the upside being that 5th gear actually feels like a driven gear rather than an overdrive.

i gotcha. sometimes with the stock 5MT it feels like an extra 6th gear would be nice for OD.

So would it be correct that a 03 standard wrx for example would have a 3.9 front ring and pinion, 1.1:1 tail section and 3.454 rear diff? Just trying to learn about how the ratios work.
