Default Android bluetooth phone set up?

My OSB finally came in last friday (ealier post here), and today was the first day I actually was able to drive it for any considerable length of time. Before leaving, I decided to give the bluetooth audio/phone a spin as well. The audio part went off without a hitch, really. Played music from the music app, as well as streaming from Pandora and Yahoo!Music app.

The phone part seems to be giving me issues. This is something I kind of anticipated. I've known that android phones, at least some of the HTCs (I have the Incredible), don't have the ability to operate "hands free" from a bluetooth headset. You can use a headset, but the only thing you can do from the headset buttons is pick-up and incoming call, and hang up. No voice dialing.

Now, I was able to start the process by following the steps in the manual. I thought that I had paired the phone and set up a couple of entries in the car's phonebook, but everytime I tried to make a call it said I was not, in fact, paired.

Am I fudging some step or missing something from the manual? Or is this a known problem with Android phones? Any guidance would be much appreciated. I've been scouring various Android resources, but figured another subaru owner might have run into this as well.

Just to give you some hope but my EVO works fine, Android HTC phone on 2.1 still.

That is hopeful. I've been unsuccessful in getting specific info through other searches which leads me to believe that perhaps this isn't really a problem generally - I'm probably just missing something in the manual. Will attempt again tonight.

After trying again, I'm pretty sure there's something up with my phone's ability to pair with the phone service. As I said before, I didn't seem to have a problem getting it to work on the audio side of things.

After going through the first couple of steps, I get to the point where the car is searching for a phone to connect to. Even though my phone is discoverable, the car doesn't seem to want to pair. One thing I haven't tried, which I just thought of, is that perhaps because my head set (a jawbone) is still registered on my incredible, maybe that's preventing it from pairing successfully with the car. Will try deleting my jawbone from the incredible to see if that helps. If this is the case, I'd probably be ok with that for the time being as I only used the jawbone while driving.. though it does suck if I have to re-pair each time I want to use it.

Worst case scenario, other than it just won't work 'period', is if the fact that it's paired with the car's bluetooth audio is preventing it from pairing with the phone part. I definitely don't want to have to choose between the two. Makes one of the two features useless.

If either of those possibilities turn out to be the case, hopefully froyo will fix the issue... which should be out sometime winter 2014.

Fyi for any that may run into this:

I deleted my phone from the car and vice versa. I then first paired the phone and I got it to work. Audio was also working. However I wasn't able to get it to work when I got back in my car later. Trying to see where I messed up this time.

Did you ever get your BT to work? Mine was working just great (after a bit of initial fussing). Then I installed some new sound equipment (left the head alone) AND dropped my phone in ice tea (yeah, I'm a genius).

So now I have a new phone and the stereo was reset by pulling the battery, puts me back to square one. At first the phone would pair with the car, but then the connection was flat out dropped a few times. Now the phone doesn't even see the CAR_M_MEDIA connection available. I'm worried that something has happened to the BT transmitter on my car. :-(

Yes. It seems that I was on the right track, it just took a moment for both the headset and phone to connect. IIRC, what I ended up doing the first time was going through the setup in the car, and then I made my phone discoverable AND I scanned for devices with my phone. Seems superfluous, but it didn't seem to work if I just let the car search for my discoverable phone. Now, when I get in the car and the bluetooth on my phone is on, it just connects... one note though... I seem to have some issues with that initial connection if my wife was driving and she hooked her phone up.

Ah... discoverable. That fixed everything (for now). I initially refused to choose that option because it was a logical contradiction, the car should be transmitting at that point, not the phone.

Should know in the next few days if it continues to drop the connection.

Thanks for the help.

Glad to hear that worked. I agree that it doesn't make sense, but I was starting to get desperate by the time I tried that.

Well... it kinda worked.

Phone won't automatically pair, I have to do it manually every time now. And even then, it's not playing nice. Head unit controlls won't always switch songs, sometimes it disconnects or won't connect to media. I'm getting pretty peeved, might tear open the console and run a USB up through to the charger location and just use that (use my phone for navi so I don't want it in the console). But then the BT phone won't work :-(

You can add a shortcut to the BT settings. My wife's phone won't connect automatically either, so I added that shortcut for her.

I may have mentioned this before: but before froyo, things worked bang-on exactly how you might expect them to work. I could listen to music on either pandora or from my phone, and nav directions would cut in and out as needed. After froyo, things got all fuct, and nav would cut off music for all but a few select apps (the winamp beta seems to work. Pandora has since been updated so it works) The up/down worked for both pandora and local music. Even cooler, switching off of local music and/or pandora to my radio would automatically pause what I was listening to. The upshot of this was I could listen to the radio and cut to music quickly via BT. That doesn't happen now. And most annoyingly of all, my default music player starts auto-playing after initial connection, re-connection from other input source, or after I hang up from a call. this isn't so bad if I'm already listening to my music player, but generally my go-to is pandora.

Yeah, BT shortcut has been my fix for now. Froyo 2.2 was working great with BT for me (prior to my iced tea incident), so I don't think that is all of the problem, tho it may be some of it.

My current thought is that there is and additional service running now that is causing the BT to behave poorly. I'm trying to remember what I've installed since the BT was working and have been selectively uninstalling items.

Pandora is a go-to for me too, mainly because I don't do a good job of maintaining a varied library on the phone (syncing with iTunes sucks). Then I found Jam11. Stream music from your PC/Mac to your phone, works OK. Now I have 100G worth of music on my phone, more or less.

:-(

At this point I've tried everything on the phone side; including ROOTing my phone and installing a new ROM with different BT drivers. Problem is the Subi, which I don't know how to fix, or even start to play with. Might be time for a new head unit, I just really like those steering wheel controls.

That's rought. FWIW, verizon just pushed an update, 3.26 I believe, to some of their phones. I got it the other night. I haven't noticed any problems with my phone, but if you happen to be online for an OTA update soon, perhaps that'll do the trick.

As far as new head units are concerned, I've read various posts that suggest it may in fact be possible to get head units to work with the integrated steeringwheel controls as well as in the integrated mic... I know almost nothing about car audio systems, but if you really want to make it happen, it seems at least possible. Lord knows there's a lot of stuff I would like to see in a head unit upgrade (things like better player integration, album art and tag info over bt) but I'm too lazy to do the research to find out what would be needed to not lose my steering wheel controls.

The BT (and other wheel controls) seem to be a variable resistance circuit which is nominally open. Meaning, it's only a few wires which send different amperages (assuming volts are held at 12) to the HU depending on the button pushed. Or at least that's how I read the schematics:

It seems like a stretch to assume that the industry would have standardized how many amps trigger song forward, mute, etc; but maybe they have (which would make finding a compatible HU feasible).

For now, my rooted phone lets me keep it awake while in my car dock, so at least I don't have to unlock it while driving. That, and I programed the volume rocker to skip songs when long-pressed. It's just not on the wheel... X-(

Just got my sport limited on Friday. I was trying out my non-nav head unit connected to my Android phone.

Using Bluetooth and Pandora, does the head unit display track info from Pandora, or is that just the navigation head unit?

Mine didn't display anything when I was trying it out.

i have the type B radio, (well now i have a similar radio from a forester) but anyway, via BT my audio displays song/artist, etc with no issues, and I can dial from the voice commands/phonebook,etc with no problems. I have a Galaxy S2 (sprint version)

this radio, (or the simialr 625 from a Forester, all work fine with everything posted above)

Is that a special tool you have for opening the dash? Or what is it? May be useful for when I decide to upgrade my stereo...

Definitely disappointed with that. Would be nice to have track info displayed when Pandora is running.

hey. i tried googling this and searching on here before posting. I just bought the Samsung Galaxy S3 and i am having difficulty connecting to my head unit. i can pair it manually going into the phone and "connecting" it even though it says "paired". Specifically, i am having trouble reconnecting the phone after i turn off the car and turning the car back on. I have tried deleting the phone and repairing it. google has turned up a thread saying that the "new" update corrected the problem, oddly the thread was started by a 2012 subaru owner but the model was not stated. my phone is the latest update 4.0.4. has anyone come up with a fix for this.

I also have a sgs3 and to start the connection is bad. What works for me for a weird reason. Turn on the car. Turn on Bluetooth on phone then turn on radio.
