I think it'd be safe to say you'll need an aftermarket clutch. Especially if you get the larger turbo.

The clutch will be fine for just a VF39.

What about the 43 and 48? Is the VF39 the most in reliable of the 3 you'd think?

I'm just saying....and oh okay it's whatever just wondering. Looking around for VF39 or 43 and sti tmic but nobody has any for sale on here! Turbo for >450 shipped and sti tmic >250 shipped none out there in good condition!

I'm running 15.5 psi of boost from a VF43 from 5500RPM to 6800 RPM and my target AFR is 10.7:1. Guess what ? The stock fuel pump couldn't do it. I was only getting 10.9:1~11.1:1 AFR at best. My 02 wideband sensor was perfectly calibrated, the stock fuel pump with 40K miles on the clock just couldn't deliver enough fuel. So, OP, change your fuel filters and UPGRADE that fuel pump while you're in there. |

Yes on top of the sti tmic and turbo I'm doing fuel pump. I do the fuel filter as preventative maintenance anyways since I always change that when I buy a car!

Tuner said he's going to do a winter tune so ill have less torque, around 310/310, but for spring ill be at 320/340ish

A new stock clutch will hold the torque and be easiest to drive. You just won't get 90k miles out of it like you could at stock torque levels, and clutch jobs are expensive. An aftermarket "Stage 1" clutch (like those from ACT or Exedy) will hold the torque and theoretically last longer. But the pedal will be heavier, and they can chatter. I personally went with an Exedy Stage 1 street clutch and a stock flywheel. It engages smoothly and is easy to drive. But the pedal is heavier and I hear a grinding noise at about 2200-2400 RPM under heavy acceleration. Under normal acceleration it is quiet. Long story short, stick with the stock clutch for now and do research when it comes time to replace it. If you do go upgraded, don't go heavier than "Stage 1". My $.02, not the Bible. |

With 15.5 psi at redline and a target of 10.7:1, my IDCs are well into the 90% range with a Walbro. Without the Walbro, IDCs were flirting with 100% and AFR target of 10.7:1 was not reached. How do you guys feel about headers w/ uppipe? Actually debating on whether on installing them or just selling them (they are UEL) because they did put a hole in my wallet. People are all for modding to Grimmspeed port & polish manifold w/ crosspipe and uppipe and saying it makes a difference but buying aftermarket headers w/ uppipe makes no difference. Also, I always thought that porting would make you lose spool too.

The stock fuel pump is fine, I'm replacing it as a precautionary measure since it seems to be the general consensus. I don't plan on upgrading further than VF and tmic so it should be fine. My clutch is perfect now, even after 30-40 pulls since I've bought it! Ill go stage 1 clutch after it starts slipping, no point to replace it until then though yes!

How will 5 speed trans and diff hold up with 320whp 340wtq? Give or take and what's safe? And will an hks bov hold 20psi?

Assuming I never launch or red line it besides maybe once a month. A Wrx with 88k miles running strong with 240whp and 320wtq, somebody can from personal experience having the VF setup on a Wrx with stock trans and diff...

They break on stock power. Nobody really knows how long it will hold. It could blow on the first pull or could hold for 5 years.

No, there are simply FAR too many variables to say. Will it last? Probably. Will it fail? There is a chance. Lot's of people have a similar setup to yours on their WRX's and don't have problems, others do. The question you are asking simply cannot be answered with full honesty. If you are simply looking for a number, 20 years.
Edit: Forgot to mention the whole "glass transmission" argument is a lie. These are essentially the same transmissions that have been used by Subaru for nearly 20 years in Japan and make equal or more power when modded. My 18G and trans have done just fine, and I can beat on it pretty good. You'll hear more of ringland failures then trans failures. |

07 WRX Wagon, 64k miles Stock trans. - gears, clutch, flywheel. VF43, DW 750cc injectors, STi tmic, Invidia catless 3" exhaust, Cobb Tuning SF itake, tuned by Sean Ivey. Made 321awhp / 343awtq @ 21psi. Clutch slips in 4th at WOT in low RPMs. Otherwise it's fine. If you're going to be on a stock 5 speed, don't shift much below 2,500 RPMs. Lower RPMs = more load on your clutch / trans = shorter life span. Barring 6,500 RPM dumps, no-lift shifts, and other completely unnecessary driving habits on the street, the stock drivetrain will handle the power no problem. With the and sr intake already installed! Can't WAIT to boost hard that's a lot of power for a 20 yr old haha |
