Do you know bearing clearance? Who built this engine? Was oil pump packed for start up? Look's like it happened on start up.

BUT WHAT DO I KNOW LOL
I haven't split the block yet, just pulled those two pistons. I built the block, bearing clearances were good when assembling. I did not pack the oil pump but used lots of redline assembly lube and fully primed the motor before starting

Looks like you had too much knock on that cylinder. The top ring land looks like it's seen quite a bit.

You said you tuned it yourself, right ?
How much knock were you getting ?

I've had guys think knock was ok because they had forged pistons. Knock is never ok.

Every time I've logged knock I had less than .3 volts. It was originally tuned by AMS with the old motor I just touched the tune up a bit after I built this block.

.3 volts? What are you using for EMS?

AEM. The top of the piston has no signs of detonation. Also, this happened while using 2 step

I can barely see it in the picture. It looked like a lot of small pits below the upper ring. Plus the wear on the wrist pin made me think detonation.

Were these upgraded wrist pins??

I'm not going to bash said shop but I do know for a fact they are a little timing happy on their tunes and based on the dyno sheets I have from the previous owner they aren't exactly the most well-versed in Subaru tuning.

Is it safe to say that nobody verified the pin to piston clearance?

They were not upgraded pins, I don't remember where timing was at. It made 450/449 on AMS's dyno. The tune really wasn't that great, drivability kind of sucked

Explain the drivability issues.

If his issues were anything like mine...the car would cruise so lean it would hesitate if you stepped on the gas faster than a grandma on a Sunday drive. Throttle so touchy it looks like you just started driving your first stick shift car. Throttle accel issues out the azz.

Ahh yes, the AMS driveability issues.

Look at the ignition accel and decel tables. Mine were spaced out.

Would it be worthwhile to replace all the wrist pins with JE's upgraded pins? I'm wondering if the wrist pin bent slightly because of the extreme load

Stronger pins are always worth it.

JE recommends the upgraded pins for over 500 hp.

I found out a tapping noise was one of my rod bearing being bad and the noise was only from 2.5k rpm-4k rpm. The rod and crank were f'ed up bad. So, a tear down would be adviseable if you have a spare car or borrow one.

Problem was cyl 2 wrist pin. Rebuilding right now should be running in a couple weeks or less

UPDATE: just fired the car up anddddd the tick is still there although it doesn't sound as bad. I'm grabbing some 20w50 right now to try out and see if it goes away. It's only there now when completely warmed up

Another update..switching from 10w40 to 20w50 made absolutely no difference in sound..car still runs perfect. Swapped avcs solenoids around to see if the noise followed..it didn't. Car still runs perfect. I am seriously lost as to what this could be.

upppdates!! if you swapped to new pistons, and replaced the rod bushing...seems tou should run car wihtout timing belt cover and visually look at tensioner. sounds dumb but very easy to do and only takes a short amount of time.

maybe its an oil flow issue, also did the lash check out before you installed new motor? if lash is good and all bearings/wrist pins are clearanced right shouldnt be any more noise loud tap wise...

maybe avcs issues......

One new piston, 4 new upgraded wrist pins. Had all pistons and rods honed to correct wrist pin clearance
