My mother in laws 2004 Jaguar X-Type needs brakes. All four corners are worn out. 40,xxx miles and her composite rotors can't be turned and need replaced....plus new pads.

Are you sitting down?

Jag dealer........$1900

Friend who works for a dealership........$1200

My cost for parts and free labor.....$600

Total Savings: $600-$1300

Please tell me theres not some special $900 wrench I need to do this in my garage.

It's a Jag. You probably need a $900 wrench to take the wheel off.

The car really is a huge POS. I remember having to drive it home one night on a lengthy trip and thinking how much nicer my LGT was.

im serious. I dont know how many guys I saw who said the caliper was frozen, untill you tell them it turns the other way even then its a big PITA cause the tools designed to do this arent meant to turn backwards so you have to put pressure on the piston while turning it in to get it to go back.

Also make sure you line up the cut out in the caliper piston with the locating pin on the back of the brake pad

You need a piston turning tool, that is the only special tool, you cannot compress the rear piston it has be turned in.

Toyotas and VW have used that rear caliper piston style for years. Just get the cheapo tool that goes on your socket wrench from pepboys to do it.

You can rent those for free from Autozone; they just take a deposit.

Yeah, somewhat common. My conquest has them, or at least something similar. The tool is a cube that fits on a socket with little prongs of different sizes coming out of each side for a somewhat universal fitment.

I just bought mine for like $8

No shizzle, before I got married my wife was taking her car to the dealer for everything because they treated her well. No surprise that they were treating her well, I got the mailer for her 60k mile service and the estimate was almost $500 and all they were actually going to replace was the oil, filter, air filter, cabin filter, and some fluids. The rest of the charges were labor to inspect parts. WTF? I went through their checklist, replaced parts and fluids, and signed the sheet as a tech. 3 hours and $100 later I saved about $400.

Pretty much, Jag parts are ridiculous. Probably even worse than Porsche parts. I'll bet Sharky has some stories of taking in the pooper on ze parts from ze Germans.
