I guess what I'm looking for is someone to sit me down and straight out say...."this is the answer and what I would do" "this is what is costs" "heres where to get it"
I know I don't know enough about subarus....I come from the world of AE86's so I'm hoping someone who has done the research/knows-well can tell me so I can get on to owning and knowing my own car and learning this new world my self.... is there no easy answer?? I plan (at this point) to go with FuKi K's advice....I'm sure hes right I'm just hoping with say "hey loser this is what you do!!" not "you might, you could" hope this doesn't seem dick-ish I'm not trying to be...lol

Bottom line is no subaru oem transmission to date is shatterproof. The only one that's close is the six speed sti versions and not everyone wants the expense or likes driving the six. Whatever transmission you choose there is still a chance a gear will fracture due to engine torque, you may eveb shift poorly a few times too many and break it. You just have to be prepared with backup, the transmissions just aren't as beefy as we'd like them to be. Getting into aftermarket gears is pricey as well but you'll still find people breaking them.

I think most people are looking for gears that are good enough for whatever their goal is not unbreakable..

I know everything will break....I'm looking for something in the:
less likely to break > best for performance I've not broken my 1.8L trans yet but I've been told by everyone I should have....it has a lot of problems I'm sure that are from misuse by previous owners and age I wanna get started on a different turbo set up but this is a really big hurdle I have to get over first.....there are some really big subaru shops here in oregon but I'm worried about getting over charged too because I don't know enough about I'm buying.... |

I took a $5000 loan last year for the motor swap....I just simply can't afford a 6spd....
I will be funding my new drivetrain with the $ I get from selling my old swap....so I have to figure out what exactly to get....and where....I'd like to know what I should pay because the guy I could be buying off of will likely take advantage of the fact I know nothing about this..... |

well look here to get a ballpark figure for what parts/year 6MT you would want. then go from there. that site breaks down for the most part all necessary parts to make everything work.

I read the entire thread and what a good read it was!
Thanks FujiK for putting this together. I am still a bit perplexed however and would love some clarification. I have an 06 WRX that I did a full STi swap into using a wrecked 05 STi as the donor. I love everything about the car now expect the GIANT drop in RPM from 4th to 5th gear and what I perceive as a USELESS first gear. Ideally for me and my type of driving, first gear would carry me out to more than 15 miles an hour (lol) and there would be identical spacing between 4th and 5th RPM wise, leaving 6th as an overdrive. Does such a gear ratio exist? I guess I should probably take a spin in my buddies 07 STi to get an idea of how his first gear feels, but more specifically how the drop from 4th to 5th feels. If it works out that the 07 6mt has a better ratio/spacing then I will be on the hunt for an 07 6mt and R180 and swap it out yet again. It was all well worth the effort, but I hate 1st gear and the fact that this 05 6mt feels like it has 2 overdrive gears. |

look into that first. and i know what you mean, ive driven a friends 04 STi, and yes the switch from 4th to 5th was somewhat anemic lol, but i did drive another friend's Spec B, and lets just say i hate him very much right now lol. |

Running my JDM STi 6spd feels really nice when 4th to 5th. Power is still there and your RPM is still in the powerband. |

Subaru doesnt like to make most things really easy, unlike hondas lol. my assumption for them is if you want the goods ya gotta pay to play. we spend more money on built bottom ends and drivetrains than some (i should say most but thats limited to the street guys running all-motor cars) do on their entire builds. this is a bit OT but i still giggle to myself when i see vids of guys with gutted, stripped, EF/EG hatches w/built B/H/K motors running against BPU (bolt-on, tuned) STi's and Evo's and beat them by small amounts and then call that an accomplishment. try again when either car has 395-550+whp.......or even with some weight reduction.

where's my 6th gear!
I have a 1995 Impreza "STI" with the stock 5 speed,I love how it shifts thru 1st to 5th but it feels like it could really use another gear,it revs 5th out quick it tachs 6500 rpm at 110 mph,but if I let off then lay back in to it it'll tach 6500 again but run 120 mph why does it do that? Is it just my car or normal?

.825 5th gear with a 3.900FD. That's just a tad longer than my JDM 6th gear, which runs a .842 with a 3.900FD. You should be able to run all the way to 140mph at redline. Your TACH is cable driven. It being old will get caught and won't read as high. I notice this. I see it in my '95 H6 swap. |

My 95 hits at least 130mph and the speedometer is cable driven. I am using an 05 RS transmission and final is 3.9. He should grab a gps and compare his speed with that to see if the speedometer calibration is that far off.

updated the '08 WRX to 3.900FD. Somehow the rear diff assembly shows 4.111? But looking at the front ring gear shows 3.900. The LGT are 4.111 for '05/'06 where they changed to 3.900 for '07+.

Thats probably a good deal. I bought a damaged case 05 legacy tranny for 200.00 from a wrecking yard. It cost somewhere around 100.00 shipping and I also needed a new mainshaft/inputshaft that was about 130.00. That will be my minimum cost. I may need syncros or shims but also maybe not.
Brand new parts are always better than used parts. |
