Yo i couldn't believe the sound that is now coming from the car. Did the sedan mode and through mode along with the loudness. OMG! the one thing that I always complained about was the system in the car just wasn't up to par. Now though, it actually has a punch to it. I think because for some reason my loudness was off. IDK why wtf!!!?? but problem solved.

I find that too. Even at loud volumes I think I found some settings I like with loudness on. EQ on through mode

Bass -2 to -4
Mid -5
Treb -1 or -2 (can't remember which)

Loudness changes your EQ curve with the volume knob. Not very good if you're looking for a consistent sound.

I know that, but it is close enough for me, especially with the through/flat eq setting.

hello everyone. i found this thread from a link from another site. i just bought a 2013 Limited Outback and have been very unhappy w the audio sound. im an audio mixer/engineer by trade and im pretty picky but also my last car was a 2003 limite outback, so i was at least expecting similar sound. i am interested in trying to reach these menus but dont know if this works on my car yet.

i have a question abt the loudness setting though. loudness historically is an eq curve setting that was designed to be used at low volume settings. it is based on the fact that at low volumes, rules of physics and our ear design make it so the low end drops disporportionately lower. the loudness compensates for this drop in low end. it was only designed for low volumes and makes things unnecessarily boomy at higher volumes. all the past head units i have used have this setting but it is a flat setting that is on or off w a button. . if its on, its on all the time regardless of volume, even though it was designed to use w only low volumes. am i understanding by posts here that if it is ON with these head units that it only activates when u turn the volume to low levels and when u turn the volume up, it deactivates automatically? ?? i have never seen that but wld explain why its a feature that is hard to access, which seemed crazy to me cause usually u wld turn it on whenever u have the volume low.

Yes, the level of loudness goes down as you increase the volume level to a point where it essentially deactivates. This is why I still use it

I've been messing around with the hidden menu options on my 2012 and I can't really find a difference between sedan, wagon and through mode. When you select the key combinations and the mode you would like to use shows up how do you know its actually saved?

The easiest way to tell it's saved is to press the buttons for that mode again. Nothing will show up on the display if it's already in that mode.

In through mode, the bass sounds more even to me; the volume of each note on a bassline stays more constant. The difference is easier to hear when loudness is off. Loudness messes with the EQ so much that it's hard to tell what else is going on.

One other observation I made recently: the loudness keys don't work in AM or FM radio mode. The 1-6 buttons act as station presets, which appears to override or interfere with them.

Go back several pages in this thread. There are graphs showing the levels at different frequencies. Interesting to see what the diferent settings are doing to the EQ curve.

This is a great thread and IMHO should be a sticky at the top. The change in sound is much better than how it came, making it at least tolerable. It just makes me wonder what they were thinking by putting those curves in the HU in the first place

Can confirm that the setting from Wandeas early on work with 08 Premium hu. Also, thank you and have my babies lol I never would've dreamed the stock stereo could be considered adequate or better

To turn loudness on or off:

With the unit ON, press and hold 1, 6, and TUNE (right knob.) The display shows LOUD OFF or LOUD ON.

To disable fixed EQ:

With the unit OFF, press one of these combinations of buttons:

1 + 2 + TUNE for SEDAN
1 + 3 + TUNE for WAGON
1 + 4 + TUNE for THROUGH MODE

With these "features" disabled, it sounds significantly less awful, especially at lower volume levels. This should make it a much better candidate for use with upgraded speakers, or a line out converter and amps. From the schematics, I think it would be fairly easy to add proper RCA line outputs as well.

I don't know if these keys will work on earlier models, but hopefully they do.

Fantastic forum you've got here!
Just want to confirm this works on 2013 WRX HU.

i just did this on my 09 premium sedan. turned off loudness and set it to passthrough mode. i have factory tweeters and an after market subwoofer/amp. my settings on the amp are pretty conservative but after the change my amp is clipping. i had to reduce power at the amp. now i need good amount of volume for subwoofer to shake things. but the overall sound quality is slightly improvedwith no more high pitched distortions. Radio and SAT quality is improved the most. Still i'm wondering if i can raise my bass level without clipping the amp?

I have a similar set up on mine. 4 way amp to the factory speakers and a sub/amp with the factory H/U...Turned off the loudness and set passthrough mode. Bass is a little more defined from the sub but not great...I am waiting to get more cash to upgrade the H/U and the speakers, right now I dont have the sound I want but I hope to upgrade the H/U & speakers this summer.

The loudness toggle worked for me on an 08 base head unit. Does anyone know how to access the EQ menu on the 08 units?

does your back panels rattle when the sub hits, if so how did you fix that? do you know if u upgrade your H/U if u can still use the satellite radio? anyway loudness seems to just add bass and treble at low volumes and flattens out at higher volumes. i don't see why it should be turned off from my experience. unless for people who have the bass set at anything higher than -3 it might be boomy. but with a sub setup im keeping my loudness on along with -4bass and +4 treble. The sedan/wagon EQ should be disabled though.
