Front License plate in TX
How many people actually have the front license plate mounted?
I'll be getting my real plates soon (its been 4 weeks since I bought my car!) and was wondering if i should mount the front license plate... i really don't want to but i don't want any tickets either.

well...
Not because I want to have it on there, just because cops are 'Richards' and I don't want to get pulled over for some stupid crapola.

it's your call
But...By not displaying the front plate, you have broken the law and"Richard" is now free to search you and your car. Its all on you, I don't like it either, but I don't want to give the man another reason to stop me. Ask any criminal lawyer, and they will tell you the same( I just ask the wife). It's an easy reason to stop you and look for further violations.

front plate
One of our local houston gents trimmed his font plate down to just the letters clearly showing (like a euro plate) and mounted it centered on his font bumper so its not blocking air flow at all. He claims the cops have seen him more than once and no hassles at all. I like what he did (very clean, doesn't block 40% of lower opening airflow). I'll ask a houston patrolman and try to get an official response. W'eve got a few working security in our building.

i've heard this a couple of times... but if you alter the plate issued by TxDOT, you have altered/damaged state property... which, is breaking the law.
I pass cops all the time they dont pull you over up here, UNLESS you're at a street race or "crusing" on a friday/saturday night.. then they'll pull you over for anything. I've been pulled over 3 times: 1st time 81 in a 55.. cop checked licence plate.. not there... just got a warning 2nd time no tailights (electrical fault.. no plate.. cop told me to go on my way 3rd time... 55 in a 40.... just made sure i had the right sticker... got back on his bike.. went for another guy All that happened within a year of purchase |

I have not had a front plate on for 10 years.
Had a few tickets, but never for that. They are about to change the law to save money. (and stop manuf. a front plate)
The officer must have probable cause to search your car. One missing front plate is not probable cause for a search. Always close your car doors if you leave your car in front of an officer. With the doors closed , you dont have access to any weapons in the car and he has no reason to searh there for same. But, he can always say he smelled something illegal and then he has probable cause. Last edited by ThinkTank; 07-31-2001 at 06:02 PM. |

While I can see how modifying your existing plate might be illegal, does anyone know the legality of something like this:
They clearly list the state and license number on the front of the vehicle ... |

They're not mine ... the cars belong to skeletor25RS and subpreza, if I remember correctly (someone correct me if I'm wrong) ... guess I should have specified that in the post.
I was thinking about getting one for my car, as I don't have my front plate on yet ... [I believe subpreza can get them for you, but I deleted the PM I got about it, so I may be mistaken on the name -- can get them from many other places with anything you want on them for about $30-40] Last edited by SanjuNana; 07-31-2001 at 07:46 PM. |

I personally have not had a front plate on any of my last 3 cars. I have been pulled over twice for speeding and neither officer mentioned my missing plate. I do keep it in the cabin with a couple of suction cups for interstate driving between cities. Highway patrol seems to care a little more about it than city cops from what I hear.

The cop can do anything he wants.
The question is if any evidence he gains from an illegal search can be used against you in court. If your rear plate is good, and you have no front plate, any evidence he finds from a search of the inside of the car without your express permission will not be good in court. This assumes a lot of things. No hand gun in plain view inside the car. Other people with a cloud of acrid smoke around them in the car. A bound and gaged minor from another state inside the car, etc.
The lack of a front plate violates a very small law. As does speeding. If he wants a good seisure of evidence, the officer better find some other reason to search your car. Never agree to a search if asked. The stories of I-10 seasures are a good demonstration of abuse of the rights of search and cause. Always be very polite to the officer as he really can do anything and ruin your day. Treat him as though he did you a favor by pulling you over and never do anything to make him feel uncomfortable. I've never had anything in my car to hide...
.....so I've never had a reason to tell a cop he couldn't search. Yeah thats mine and subpreza's car up there. I've never had a problem with a cop for the plate, and I drive a LOT. From what I hear, cops think it looks like a diplomatic plate, and they really don't want to mess with you

I can get the plates made for you for $32. They are made out of aluminum and sport white reflective vinyl and black letters. They are built to euro size and spec. It takes about a week to get them made. If you want one for divisionals next week let me know asap. Call me at 409 945 0207. BTW, I have never been pulled over for my plates. I never even been hassled about it. Remember the pics of me, Steve, and Andres getting pulled over by DPS? The officers quote "cool plate, will it fit on a Suburban?" TxDOT code: Passenger vehicles must display a front license plate that is not fictitious in letter or characters. (i.e. sports logos, non issued vanity plates, mirrored images) As long as your issued number is there you should not have a problem. I have been rolling with my plate for 6 months with no negative feedback from the fuzz!

Never....
8 tickets....
1. 74 in a 60 No plate. Ticket for speed only. 2. 54 in a 40 No plate. Ticket for speed only. 3. 88 in a 70. No plate. Ticket for speed only. 4. 75 in a 60. No plate. Ticket for speed only. 5. 51 in a 40. No plate. Ticket for speed. Ticket for no insurance card. Ticket for no tail lights. 6. 85 in a 60. No plate. Ticket for 5mph over. (Nice cop in MO). And none of these were in my nice bright red sports car... all of them were in 4 door cars with no visible mods. And not a one of them actually stuck on the record... all ofthem were "taken care of." Plate? I still don't run with one... I only bolt it on when I am going out to cruise around the Metroplex on the weekend with friends. |

To get back to the poll, I never put the fronts on. I had tickets back (about 10 years ago) in school but never did they give me one for no front plate, not even a warning. I live in WestU in Houston where we have Nazi's for cops and they never even give me a second look. What I do is keep the front plate in the car with me so I can show them it wasn't stolen. Its a non moving violation and is usually a fix-it ticket. As an aside, the WRX is the first car that actually has the holes predrilled with the ugly tab built in. Very ugly.

i don't have a pic of mine, but i went to a vinal shop and had a reflective vinal sticker made from my plate...sticks to the outside of the windshield in the upper passenger side corner...3/4inch shorter in length and height so it would clear the wipers, and it's more reflective than a regular license plate...oh yea, it was only $20

My first car, I got pulled over specifically for no front plate 3 times...all warnings. Within the first 2 weeks with my suby, I got pulled over for no front plate. There was no dealer tag up there either... Go figure..

i went to the dps today
The short answer is no.
The long answer is no, unless it is a show car with a signed letter from the state that the plates are for "show" porposes. i was going to ask them to cite regulations where i could find these laws, but i "slid" in front of several (ok, quite a few ) people to get this answer. |

if anyone finds some sort of official law book, maybe you can photocopy the part that lets you use euro style plate and keep it in your glove box just in case ...
