Default A new bill proposed to eliminate front plates!

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=3189

One-time fee of 75 bucks and you're in! The money goes towards vehicle theft counter-measures.

Cool.. its a step in the right direction - I'd gladly pay $75...

One thought - am I still subject to being pulled over so they can check if I payed the $75???

Doubtful--I think its something they would check after they've pulled you over for something else to see if you've paid the fee.

Wirelessly posted (Treo 600: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 95; PalmSource; Blazer 3.0) 16;160x160)

I wish every state had the balls and the vision to propose such a bill.

Besides the front plate, the funding for a vehicle theft swat force is awesome.

Our vehicle theft problem in this area has gotten out of hand.

I like the idea, but that bill is WAY too vague.

Is it a 1-time, or a once-a-year? It just says a fee. Is it per-car, or per operator? That said, I've always considered a no-plate ticket to be the price you pay for not running a front, and I like the idea of where this money is going.

I'd balk at the idea of paying it on every renewal. More money, for less stuff? I don't mind a one-time fee per plate issued though. That means I'd pay every 7 years, and i'm okay with that.

Play with fire, get burned. Just don't complain when you get burned.

This is a pretty sweet idea, I don't think I'd mind paying that fee at every renewal either.

I wish Idaho would do this. Its stupid over here, if your car is a '70 or older you don't need one, newer than that and you do. What difference should that make? Stupid Idaho

Absolutely nowhere near the required amount. This is a much better option, IMO.

Yes it is stupid to have the front plates. They exeptions on certain cars, or certain years, which really does not make sense. Its either on or off. And I say if its off on the exempted cars, why not on just have em off on all cars, or make it optional. Im down for the new bill. Plus I would really hate to have to drill into my bumper.

I dislike front plates, and I am fed up with the current state of car theft rates (having my prized MR2 stolen and stripped a few years back). But I have a problem with this bill.

Why is there a need to setup special funding for something that should already be part of normal police budgets?? How is this fund going to change the fact that the punishment for auto thiefs too weak to be a deterent?

If they offer an exemption for the front plates, that must mean there is no real reason to have them on our cars. So why not repeal the whole law and pocket the savings in making front plates as a bonus?

How about the state gives us a 50% discount on our registration fees for not costing them extra money to press a second plate?

How about they do an audit on where our money really goes. We pay so much for a piece of paper to stick on a plate that we paid for when we first bought the car. Plates are placed there for identification, but if they are going have exceptions, it just dont make sense. Its unfair to other car owners. Its almost like profiling people. Don't they think about that. And to think about this, we pay so much for these so called smart law makers. Like most people say, our laws are outdated made for the old times and most don't even apply for these modern times.

Another thing I hate is undercover vehicles or civilian dressed cops. Not that Im afraid of them, its that they open windows to impersonators. I understand the need for unmarked cars for detective or some big steak out. But on the highway, or in the city, all official cars should be marked, and officers wearing proper uniform, to distinquish their possition. Let their presence be known, so that violence can be prevented, not wait pretend your not there and see then stop the violence. Thats why we have impersonators doing this type of living everyday. Because we give them a way of living. Now if the public knew that ONLY a marked car, a fully dressed officer, can pull them over, we would have a safer place. Not only was the presence there, people who usually would tend to speed, would slow down, hence, PREVENTING a possible accident. BUT Then again, theres no money in preventing crimes, it has to happen, so that they can issue tickets, and funds can be given by the state because theres a need for it. So no crime no funds right? What would we do without crimes..

wait a min...

I just read it, it was first entered in January of 2006 then tranferd to transprotation(dont know what that means).

Then later on it states:
"The vehicle license number plates shall be attached conspicuously
8 at the front and rear of each vehicle for which the same are issued and
9 in such a manner that they can be plainly seen and read at all times:
10 PROVIDED, That if only one license number plate is legally issued for
11 any vehicle such plate shall be conspicuously attached to the rear of
12 such vehicle."

This is just for vehicles that are "issued one plate" - So as I read it, not for passanger vehicles. This is just a change... but correct me if I am wrong!

I'd pay it not to have the plate...
