My first EVER build thread
Hey guys,
First, i appreciate any feedback on my car. i will warn you before reading my thread that i am NOT mechanically inclined and honestly, i am trying to learn. right now i can change oil and i just replaced an alternator on a ford focus.... give me a break, i am learning.haha. (Pics at the bottom) I just bought this car about a month ago and wanted to post this asap, if for nothing else, be able to watch my own progress. I knew nothing of boosted engines before i bought this car and now i am trying to do as much research as possible to make sure i dont blow something up.haha. the following is what i copied right off of CL of what the previous owner had done. the only thing that i can say at this point is that ive added a new stereo and my amp/subs. Please let me know what you guys think. Again, i am learning so you will have to give me a break on a few things here and there. 2002 Subaru WRX 2.0L Turbo w/ ~145k miles Platinum Silver Metallic Clean Title Mods List Engine: • VF22 Turbo Tuned by Dom @ MPS (320awhp/310ft-lbs) • STi Intercooler • APS 65mm Intake • Cusco Poly Engine/Tranny Mounts • Gimmick Silicone Turbo Inlet • TGV Deletes • DW 650cc injectors • Maxwell Power Hybrid Boost Control • Intake Air Temp Relocation to Intercooler • Synthetic Oil • Timing Belt Replaced by PIA at 105k miles Exhaust: • ERZ 3" catback • Greddy Flat flange 3" Downpipe • Tial 44mm EWG • Grimm speed Up-pipe • Grimm speed VF series Waste gate bracket • Kartboy Silicone Exhaust Hangers • Grimm speed crossover pipe Suspension/Brakes: • Racing Logic Coil overs (8k front/7k rear) • Whiteline Swaybars (25mm front/23mm rear)? • Whiteline Steering Rack Bushings • Whiteline anti-lift kit • Whiteline roll center kit • Whiteline Steering Rack Bushing • EBC Yellow Pads • PowerSlot Slotted Rotors • H6 Rear Brake Rotor Conversion • Girodisc SS brake Lines • Super Blue brake fluid Wheels/Tires: • 17x9 +42 Rota DPTs in hyperblack • 245/45/17 Hankook Ventus V12 R • Rolled Fenders • Front wheel bearings replaced about 10k miles ago Drivetrain: • Kartboy Shifter Bushings • Factory Option Short Throw Shifter • Stock Transmission • Stock Clutch (to my knowledge) Cosmetic: • JDM STi Hoodscoop • Prosport Boost Gauge • Koji mod Headlight shrouds • Yellow Hella Fog light bulbs • Hella Supertones painted gunmetal • Perrin weighted shift knob • Painted Sideskirts • Custom grill (or lack there of) • Debadged Trunk Things to note: • Driver's window stop needs to be adjusted • A/C needs to be charged again or is dead • Dent in passenger fender On that note, i had the dyno sheet to prove the 320awhp... but someone has walked off with it... not sure why someone would take that... oh well. Welcome to the scene. I created a build thread on here as well and surprisingly was not getting any feedback from the community. I was left to do all my own figuring of things, and so on.
That being said, your car is pretty cleanly modded as is, and is at a safe power level. You don't need a dyno plot for people to trust your numbers, that is just seeing your mod list alone says enough. Things people typically overlook (or just don't care about) at that amount of mods is; timing belt service, compression numbers, wheel bearings and brakes. Your brake setup is better than stock and plenty if you don't plan on autocross or any race events. Your wheel bearings were done recently so that's good. I'd look into when the timing belt was last serviced. What are your plans with the car? Do you plan to go more power? If so, start saving a lot. You'll be needing a built bottom soon with those miles stacking up. If you go more power, you'd be wise to do a tranny swap at the same time, or find out the hard way. Come out to some meets, get to see others cars. The more I met with people and learned off their experience, I felt like I came a much longer way then reading a thread online. Either way it's a fun journey, I was in your shoes two years ago, except with a completely stock car. Yours is pretty modified to start off with, enjoy the wrenching, but pay most attention to wear items at this mileage more so than performance. I.E shocks/strut replacement, MAF replacement, front O2, fuel filter ect. Love your car, and it will return the favor, rape on it and it will be scene on here as a part out. Once again, WELCOME! |

I find people often look up and refer to build threads when they want to see reviews of certain items or photos of certain items etc..but they don't post in them frequently. they get more feedback and comments when they are full of exciting things to report, or if people are just absolutely in love with the car etc..but typically it's a 'views only' thing, people come for some reading material or information or photos and bail. there has to be a reason or a connection to stir up conversation
I'm not sure if copying and pasting a craigslist ad from a car you bought really qualifies as a build thread though. you have a good start with your CL ad, but what I'd consider a build thread would be to document what is done to the car and show as much of the progression as you can, and update it with meaningful content, photos, description, reviews, for what you change or add/remove from the car. what you have there is a parts and mods list with no real meaningful content. if you want to make an actual build thread, it's probably better off in the member's car gallery, too. look through some other posts there for format ideas. I have a build thread over on iwsti and I don't really get many comments at all, but I still document everything I'm doing to the car so I have something to reference and look back on. it's easy to forget about different stages the car has been through otherwise. it looks like a pretty fun car and I am sure you are excited to have picked it up. I am sure you have a lot of reading to do about all of the parts on the car - there is a myriad of information throughout various forums, chances are you can find what you need by searching. try your best to research things and be thoughtful and courteous when you reach out for help - lots of trolls that love ripping newbs apart when they ask common questions that are easy to answer. +1 on going to meets, everyone loves to talk about cars there, you'll learn a lot and meet a lot of cool people! |

I wasn't going to just out and say it, but this really isn't a build thread considering there was no direction, or objective. Figured that was why there wasn't any postings in two days. Appreciate your good info Entaille well said. |

I appreciate the feedback. i have a couple of ideas on where i wanna take it, i just wasnt sure where to post something like this. Mostly i just wanted to get this up so i dont start doing anything to my car without some way of keeping track of it all. i figured that you guys might want to see it as well...
And yes, a lot of research I have found. obviously, you guys have been where im at, so i dont need to tell you. I am trying to open up my schedule for some meets. hopefully i can make it out soon. Again, thanks for the feedback |
