Thumbs up Stromung WRX Exhaust on Today...Very Nice!

This morning I had the brand new Stromung WRX muffler installed. Installation was straightforward except for one thing I'll get to in a few lines. Here is the info.

a. I got the full stainless system. The individual pieces it's constructed from are beautiful; shiny and stout.

b. The weld quality was not really up to snuff in my book. The welds were a bit uneven and there was plenty of weld spatter, even on the...

c. 76mm stainless steel dual tips. These tips are nice. As I mentioned, they are not chromed and have a very classy embossed Stromung logo on the brushed stainless surface.

d. Since this was one of the prototype units, the mid-hanger was welded on the wrong side of the 2.5" stainless piping! Nothing a little torch and rebend couldn't fix. But I will definitely make sure Scott Taylor knows about this. I can't explain this particular flub.

e. The flange had to be welded onto the pipe. I don't know if this is how the production units will be...I hope not.

f. The muffler is a straight-through design. This is in contrast to the 15 degree bends in the internals of the NA muffler.

The sound...

Turbos are quiet! With the stock mid-pipe, at highway cruising, you'd almost mistake the system for the stocker. Unobtrusive, with only a very slight but pleasant low drone.

At idle, the system is well behaved. Idling at about 750, the burble was clearly noticeable from inside the cabin but it was quite pleasant. At the back end of the car, the exhaust note was throaty and deep, sorta lopey.

On throttle the system makes a very nice throaty burble. I wouldn't exactly call it a low rumble but reasonably deep and no nonsense. Definitely not a buzzing. Even pushing 75% throttle and 5500 RPM (I know, I've only got 660 miles on it, my foot slipped!) it makes, to my ears, a well controlled, serious sound.

Around the neighborhood, I didn't get looks of disgust or shocked looks so that should give some indication of a reasonably high "public acceptance factor".

Overall: A nice looking product that provides a "civilized" yet serious sound out the back of your WRX. With the K&N drop in on the intake side and this muffler on the exhaust side...the motor definitely is more eager revving up beyond 3500RPM. It's noticeably more responsive. I'm curious to try their 2.5" non-resonated mid-pipe, but probably not right away.

So there you have it. I'll be sporting this at the upcoming NESIC Meet. If anyone is interested in this item, well, you're probably already familiar with Stromung's NA exhaust proucts so you know where to find them.

Cheers!

Wilkey

I double-checked. Yes, the piping is 2.5" OD mandrel bent. I'm working on pics and sound clips. If there is a call for 3" tubing, Stromung may switch to that. Like I said, what I have is a prototype. However, this is the same unit going to Cobb for their systems so I think that Cobb must be satisfied with this spec at least for Stage 1-type upgrades. The stock piping is also 2.5"

Why even bother replacing it if the stock is 2.5" also?

I personally going for a true 80mm exhaust. Hurry up CUSCO!!!

Ok, I went out with some calipers and measured the stock piping at a couple of points. I got 2 1/8 inches, 2.125" OD. The stock tip covers are 2 5/8 inches, 2.625".

Why would I put on a 2.5" system? Because it looks nice, sounds sporty but is inoffensive and is reasonably priced. Plus, it meets my needs at this time.

I think Stromung will listen if people want a 3" system. Just make your voice heard.

Why do you need a 3" system now?

A 2.5" systems has been proven to be good for 11 second passes in DSM's, should be fine for us.

Let's not try to re-invent the wheel here. The past 10 years the DSM's have been tuning their cars. There's much the Subie guys can learn from them.

Just because both WRX's and DSMs are 2.0L turbo, doesn't mean they are the same. 99% of exhaust systems in Japan sold for WRX are 74mm and up with 80mm being the most common one. Doesn't this tell you anything?

I had a DSM. I had a 2.5" exhaust. That was a waste of moneyt, since once I got my 3" setup the car was much faster with my 18G.
