Shop do the swap or self swap?
Which one? I don't have a garage or house to do this at. I don't have any friends. So, would you still figure out a way to DIY or would you spend $1000 - $2,000 in labor to have it swaped?
I'm going to start making some serious money soon is why i ask Then the next question is what shop? to buy the motor, do the swap, or both.

lol, I wouldn't call "doing it yourself", cake...especially if you really are doing it alone. it also depends on your experience/knowledge. if you can get away with the car being down for a bit, it would be a great learning experience to do it yourself. i'm sure you'll find some help around here.

well.. based on the fact that you don't have a garage or place of your own to do this at / store it.. I would say have someone do it for you.. the actual engine swap is not hard.. but the wiring is ridiculous for a newby depending on how good of a swap you are looking to do. if you want it like oem .. you pretty much have to strip the front end of the interior down to basically nothing. and almost rewire everything.
which brings to my next point.. besides the obvious insurance benefit.. which is not guaranteed for ANY amount of time.. why would you be so determined to go through all the expense and hassle of swapping on a newer car which still has substantial resale value and warranty? trust me when I tell you I have been in your shoes many times before. And at least in my opinion it is not worth it at all on a newer car like an 05+. If you are younger like me.. it would be a better gamble to have your parents buy a car wrx / sti and insure it as theirs and not have you as a driver until something happens then to swap your RS and say it's still an RS and then having something happens. my $.02.. but think long and hard about it. An RS coupe is a much different story!! |

lol, my parents aren't ballers and you make a valid point there.
Though, my warrenty is almost up. I would like to keep this car, but get more performance out of it. TheRS motor is the sucky. You would have to do an extreme amount of modifications to get more power out of this engine. Im asuming if i droped a different head on this block i would have to swap out the ECU as well? |

But seriously, I wouldn't bother doing a swap in anything other than a bug eye or a GC. Why bother in anything newer? It's a lot of work for something you can buy used. The bugeye & GC look better IMO anyways.

well.. I wasn't implying your parents buy the car for realz. You would pay it's just in their name. I was implying to sell the RS for as much as you can and purchase a WRX / STi.. new used whatever. say you can get 15,000 for your RS... then you could prob get into a 06 WRX TR for 23,000.. or a 02-03 WRX for less than you sell the RS for. and if you did a frankenstein build you would have to get some type of aftermarket engine management and a tune.. and also run premium gas and not have as much power as a WRX still plus you don't have much room to grow above that. Basically you best bet would be to ditch the 05 and go from there.. as sad as that may seem.. you could go newer WRX.. older WRX.. buy a RS coupe for cheap and swap that and build it out.. but swapping the 05 is probably the last place I would go.. and I think the majority of the N/A community would agree.

i second the not swaping an 05 RS. i will be swaping my 01 GC in the future, wil lbe doing the tranny drivetrain first then the engine swap. but if i had an 05 i would jsut sell it when i was ready to swap and buy an STI, having had an 06 STI i can tell you there isnt any compairson to an RS and an STI. there is so much that is different for the time and money you would put into it its not worth swaping. again just my .02

I swapped my GC and it took about 10 weeks, two days worth of engine and the rest is wiring. Kind of a pita especially if you get an older GC like the L I have, but well worth, you learn a lot in the process. Whatever you decide to do though good luck. BTW I can help if you decide to swap somethin.
