Runway courses, not quite as fun in a boost buggy.

The course wasn't that bad, just not good for PAX. And it was bad in an Evo STU car with stock Recaros. Subies have cruise control and I have Sparco Evo seats. Win and win.

Thanks John!

Show up with the cruise control mod and I'll protest you...just saying.

I haven't seen the PAX adjustments, but did we move up more or less relative to the average?

Moved up more than average. See Brian's chart in the pax thread. We need an STU group buy on steaks and Hoosier hats to send to Rick. I heard it worked for the BSP guys...

Yeah, I've seen the chart since then. Not sure what we did wrong. Only thing I can think of is that Bryan's performance in STX makes him believe that in theory STU in an M3 should be relatively faster than STX? And not sure how BSP got a gift seeing as they were faster than SM. Whatever, it is what it is.

I recently got an 04 WRX, and have started autocross this season. The only mod that pushes my car into the STU class are 17x9 wheels, otherwise it seems to me I will always be outclassed by the STIs and EVOs. Does anyone have an opinion as to whether I would be better off trading the wheels (RFP1s) to go down to STX? Thanks,

Barry

Definitely get 8" wheels and move to STX.

Hey guys, have a tire size question.

I have an ESP prepped WRX, and mainly run in local events in road tire classes, as I don't have the means for r-comp tires yet. Since you guys typically run 17x9 wheels and are limited to street tires, I thought this area would be more appropriate to ask.

Since I'm in ESP, I'm also on 17x9 wheels.

I tend to stick with star specs as a great all round aX tire for my climate.

Which size Dunlop star spec would you go with? 245/40 (actually didn't see this size on tire racks site), 245/45 or 255/40? Maybe even wider?

The 255/40 is wider, but the 245/45 is taller... keep in mind, I have a 5 speed.

Thanks

245 is the limit for AWD cars in ST* classes.

Most of us run 245/40 Starspecs or RS3's. Tirerack has discontinued the Direzza Starspec I and will be introducing the Starspec II early next year.

You'll be in STX by the way being a WRX

I believe he is just asking about tire selection since STU guys also run 9" wide wheels.

I would run as wide and small (diameter) tire as possible. A 9" wide wheel is plenty wide to handle a 265 or wider, but you may run into clearance issues. Since you are in ESP though, I believe you can modify your fenders for tire clearance...so go nuts. A smaller diameter tire will also help with the tall gears of the 5 speed.

Correct, that's what I'm asking.

What about sidewall strength? Wouldn't it be better to have a slight stretch on street tires to strengthen them up?

To strengthen, and provide a more responsive feel, generally yes.

But I think that a wider tire will yield you a larger contact patch, thus better grip (and allow for faster times).

I'm sure you could calculate the break even point between a wider tire that provides more grip vs the slight loss of response. You could create a test to show how the variables (contact patch and responsiveness) have an effect on the result (time). Without actually coming up with metrics and testing this, my (slightly educated) guess would be that more contact patch and subsequently more grip will allow for fast times when compared to a slightly more responsive tire.

Alternatively, a proper sized tire for a 9" wheel will provide the best of both worlds (contact patch and responsiveness). I believe tire rack (and searching here on nasioc) will provide you with the best tire width for a 9" wheel. Keep in mind that the size can vary by manufacturer (Star specs typically run wide).

I've ran 245/40 and 255/40, but I changed alot on the car (suspension, diff, engine, steering rack, ...) before switching to 255s, so I couldn't tell you if I felt a difference...
Not sure if I should stick with 255, go back to 245, or try 265 or larger...

However, it looks like they might not even make the new Z2 in a 265 size...

Get two sets of wheels.. 255's on one set.. 245's on the other..

The 265 Z1 Star Specs almost seemed too fat for 17x9's IMO.

You probably won't feel a noticeable difference between between 245's and 255's (given the same suspension setup), and maybe not even between a 245 and 265.

However, autox is a game of tenths of seconds, so we generally try for all we can get

Yazel - I'm running 265 Federal RSR's on my 18x8.5's and they seem to fit fine. Star specs do run wide tho...

Lol... If I can't afford R comps right now, two sets of wheels are a bit much as well, lol.

I might not even have an option of 265 if I stick with Dunlops... I'll have to wait and see when they are released.

Yep and thats why I specifically stated the Star Specs. I think when I measured my 245/40 RS3's vs. the Z1 Star Specs in the same size, the RS3's were right at 1/4" narrower per tire than the Star Specs mounted on a 17x9 wheel. I'd imagine similar size differences existed between the larger sizes as well. And my thinking of a 265 being a little too fat might also just be a biased observation seeing as I am used to a slight stretch of 245's on 17x9's.

Lol I know. Hence the wink face! But yea I think I remember seeing that expected sizes chart for the Z2 and no 265 under the 17" category.

I went from a 255/40 Star Spec to a 245/40, leaving all else he same, and was pleasantly surprised at how noticeably better turn-in felt and general overall responsiveness. This was on a 17x9 wheel, too. I can't say downsizing made me faster or slower, but I definitely liked the improved feel.

I ran 255/40 in SMS locally one year (Street mod street tire) then went to STU in 2011, same wheels, but 245/40 Z1s.. incredible difference, and speaking with a tire tech with Goodyear (Dunlop parent company)... the 255 uses a different carcus and compound than the 245. sizable weight difference too if you notice. (3-4lbs/tire).

Don't ask specifics of the difference, I have known and trust the guy a while, so I didn't dig for every last detail.

Are you saying you liked the 245 or 255 better?

That's interesting, because the wear I saw from the 255 was a bit different looking than the 245... the 255s started to look like used hoosiers towards the middle of the season, and I want to say they didn't last as long.
