Retrofit rear camera into 2012 Impreza?
Is it possible (practical) to add a rear camera to the '12 Impreza Sport Limited? I have the Limited stereo (non Nav), could it be integrated into the stereo?
The notch cut out in the rear door for a camera is there, but it wasn't even an option surprisingly? Thoughts?

i am not sure the option even exists for the stock NAV. Ask your dealer maybe the same HU is in a different model that does have the option.

The JDM accessories PDF does show a rear/backup camera. That's what the cut out is for. Not sure if the wiring is there, I wouldn't hold my breath (but yes, when I get around to replace the base factory HU, I'll look into it.)

If you have the limited non-nav stereo, it seems that there are hooks for a backup camera built-in on the stereo.
Check this out. Put the key in acc position. Turn off the stereo. The holding down '6' and turning tune dial until a firmware version info screen comes up(it takes ~5 full turns). Press the tune dial in once and you get the 'firmware update' screen. So there is potential to update firmware for things like bluetooth, ipod interface, etc If you press the tune dial one more time, it actually brings up the CAMERA!!! Well, there is no camera attached, but if you connect it, presumably, it will show the rear view camera on the stereo screen. Currently when I get to that screen, it shows a blank screen, with backup markers. If I press some other number, it turn on/off the back up marker, or brings up different size markers. I would assume that there is a video input jack in the back of the HU. In the regular screen setup menu, there is even a setting for choosing NTSC or PAL video format. I hope someone would try and hook up a camera to the stereo to see this really works. Maybe there's even a way to have it automatically switch the display to the camera when you are in reverse. Myabe down load the firmware from a forester or outback? Last edited by bobdole888; 04-12-2012 at 04:58 PM. |

I've seen after market cameras for cheap on ebay.
search for 'impreza camera' and you'll find some for $18. Personally I would look for something built better for quality, but there are cheap cameras out there. Brys, please let us know how it goes. I'm very much interested in this also. |

sorry, I was under the impression the quoted $169 was for an '12 Impreza specific OEM camera, not the "fleaBay stuff." I be interested in finding out if there are any camera(s) that would be a perfect fit to the factory "cut out" on the '12 Impreza as well.

Genuine camera from Subaru is $169.
http://parts.subaru.com/subaruparts/...cat5=0&retval= This is camera only. No display. You use the stereo's display. |

Just to verify: this info is for the 4.3" non-nav HU (CM631UD or PF-3391A-A).
There are two unused connectors on the back of the unit, next to each other. The schematic shows: 8 pin connector (J901) pin 1: CV(+) pin 2: N.C. pin 3: CAM +5V pin 4: N.C. pin 5: CV(-) pin 6: CAM DET pin 7: GND pin 8: N.C. This connector appears to be for the backup camera. A reverse signal is also present on the main connector, so I'm assuming this selects the backup camera video if CAM DET is grounded. The camera composite video should be connected to CV(+) (signal) and CV(-) (ground). Although the schematic shows pin 3 as +5V, it's really +6V. 12 pin connector (P903) (I'm going by what's shown on the schematic signals, not the text description next to it, which doesn't match) pin 1: SCAM_COMP pin 2: N.C. pin 3: N.C. pin 4: N.C. pin 5: VTR_AUDIO_L+ pin 6: VTR_AUDIO_R+ pin 7: VTR_AUDIO_R- pin 8: VTR_AUDIO_L- pin 9: N.C. pin 10: VIDEO DET pin 11: VIDEO_GND pin 12: N.C. This connector appears to be for another video input. It also looks like grounding the VIDEO DET pin will enable this video. I think this is what the PAL/NTSC select in the hidden menu is for. The video should be connected to the SCAM_COMP input. No guarantees on any of this! I'm just reporting what the schematic shows; I haven't connected video to any of this pins. Maybe SVXdc has found a source for the backup camera connector by now? |

It looks like someone might have gotten this to work with a similar HU from forester.
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2323331 The person bought a harness from svxdc to hook up a cheap ebay camera to the HU. My biggest concern would be that the Forester does have the camera option, so the HU might have different firmware that enables the camera. The if the impreza has a different firmware than the forester, then it might not automatically display camera on reverse. |

The rear camera input on the Impreza model CM631UD HU is functional. It uses the same 8-pin socket (and same pin-out) as that 2011-2012 Forester HU, as well as the 2008-2011 OEM Kenwood Navi HUs.
The Impreza HU is already wired to the reverse gear signal. It just needs to see that a camera is present for the feature to start working. I make an adapter harness with an RCA jack for an aftermarket camera. (and yes, I did finally obtain a large quantity of the 8-pin plugs for that) I can also make an adapter with plain wires for anyone who wants to connect an OEM camera. The factory wiring is not present in North American Imprezas (and apparently not all Foresters, either). So you'll need to add a long segment from the HU to the camera. I'd love to make a harness for the "VTR" A/V input, but haven't identified that 12-pin socket yet. The 2012 Impreza/Forester Fujitsu Ten nav HU also has a rear camera input, on its 16-pin socket. See this post. Since the cars already have a factory harness there (Imprezas without the camera wires), the easiest way to connect a camera is to add a new female RCA jack whose wires have the appropriate pins to snap into the factory plug (which I can also provide). Just recently, an installer used my cable and confirmed that this camera input works. Anyone who wants to contact me, see my profile (click on my username) and read the visitor message. I opened up the hatch and the wires are not there, nor is the mounting bracket for the factory camera. One could probably be fabricated or purchased from a Forester. I switched to a Pioneer so I now have a spare camera if anybody is interested.

I'm worried about routing the video signal to the HU being messy work. I see some wireless option on ebay for ~$30. That might make the install a little less overwhelming. Although, I'm not sure how well it would work with the HU. Especially I would want to have it turn on automatically on reverse. |

I finished about an hour ago, having installed a billion subwoofers, amps and various other components over the years, it was a breeze!
It was only 1 AV cable that ran to the radio, everything else (2 cables) ran to the reverse light, i snaked it all through the factory rubber passages. It's certainly not OE, but it cost under $60 complete. I used a $35 camera from a US Ebay seller. The worst part was dremeling a hole in my brand new car! Thank you SXVdc for the help and the harness! |

Honestly? It won't. The wireless would let you skip running the video line from the rear to the front of the car, that's it. Since the camera needs power, you still need to get a wire from the camera through the tailgate to a source of power (probably the reverse light circuit unless you want to hunt down a constant +12 back there). And that is (in my opinion, anyway) the hard part. Getting from the back to the front is easy, it's snaking wires through that damn boot to the hatch that's annoying.

I don't know how hard it is to route a wire from the hatch to the HU. It seems that Brys found some passage to route the AV wire. Does this need some special tool to pull a wire through? |

Buy SVXdc's 8 pin harness, connect the spade connector to one of the screws on the body of the radio, then plug in the AV cable. The "special tool" i use is a bent out hanger or a long wooden dowel with the wire taped to it to pull the wires through the rubber boots and to route the cable from the reverse lights to the hatch door. |

Does it really automatically turn on when reversing? Did you have to do anything other than using SXVdc's harness to enable the camera? Could you share with us which camera you got from ebay? How is the video quality? Did you need any special tool to run the AV wire from the hatch to the HU? |
