Default Machine shop surfaced block to the max...

Edit: Assembly questions... Post #4

So After a 2nd blown HG on a block with little boost and 230* water, I decided it was likely due to a warped deck on the block. I have never just slapped a raw head onto my block without getting it serviced/cleaned/decked. So I'm thinking it's the blcok.

Anyway with that said, my machine shop decked the block and took 0.10 mm from each side (Max limit from FSM). Being a dummy that I am I ordered OEM STI gaskets thinking they would take only half of that... Anyway since the OEM STI gasket is 0.40 mm compressed (and subsequent quench if the piston height is 0.00) it will now have a tighter quench of 0.30 mm .

Do I need to use a thicker Cometic gaskets (Their smallest seems to be 0.68 mm so my quench would be 0.58mm - or 0.18 WORSE quench than stock).

Build - EJ257 block with JE 2618 "Low-compression" hybrid pistons.
Using the EJ205 heads with slight modification to deshroud the lip on both sides of the combusiton chamber.

What would you do in my situation? I get the block back tomorrow and will be assembling this weekend...

Thanks!

Oh yeah, If the piston height is not 0.00, can somebody chime in so that I know what the real quench should be (oem). Thanks!

In this thread EJ257 vs EJ255 facts there is a chart on post #4 that shows piston height being 0.31 and quench being 0.91 on a stock 04-07 EJ257.

Thanks for the info - So the OEM Gasket is really 0.60mm and not 0.40mm?

With that said, my quench would go from 0.91mm to 0.81mm - How adversly will this affect my performance? I plan on fixing the compression ratio with the deshroud, so CR is not an issue at this point - Just the quench.

Thanks!

Question on rings... My top rings (JE) have no marking NOR bevel, (if they did, the mark or bevel is to be on the top) - So I can put these in either way.

HOWEVER My 2nd ring has BOTH a dot AND a bevel, HOWEVER they are on opposite sides... Which side faces up?!?

Dot up! U could try using two stock head gaskets on each side, pull one apart and use the outer pieces on the other, so it would be a 5 layer.

Well, I've run into a problem now...
The pistons I'm using (100mm JE "low compression") for the hybrid aren't accepting my stock rod. The rod small end doesn't quite sit low enough in the piston for the wrist pin to slide through. It looks to be off by about 0.5 mm which is a lot actually.

Well, turned out JE made a mistake... Machine shop was able to fix it via shaving part of the small end of the rod so that it'd fit. In part my rods were all balanced (small AND large ends) to within .1 grams of each other.

Needless to say machine shop is calling JE on Monday first thing to inform them OEM STI rods don't fit in this OTS part.

Slowly coming together - hope to fire it up tomorrow evening.
