Summertime's coming around and with 22k miles my CVT is getting a little better on mpg - it's pretty much falling in line with the info I posted at the start of this thread.

Filled up Thursday, hand calculated was 34.5 mpg....I've added something to the car since the last fill up, but it's too early to tell if that's the reason for the higher MPGs.

I got the same for my last tank (34.7). What did you add?

AEM dryflow air filter. I'm not saying this is the reason I got 1-2 mpg higher than normal, but time will tell. If I consistently get better than before with the same driving style and route, then I can only assume the filter helped.

Very well could be, which is why I'm not jumping to conclusions...BUT, at the same time, I'm also using my AC where before I wasn't. Again, I'm not claiming this filter is the reason, it could also just be a coincidence.
I do know a few things for sure. *Summer blend fuels are coming back *First tank after installing filter was best tank yet *Using AC now, wasn't before *Haven't changed driving habits or route driven to work |

Try switching between that and a new paper filter element for a few tanks, all else being left about the same? |

It's been a week and 1080 miles since I bought my new 2013 5-door sport cvt and just took a trip (350 miles) with roof rack and ladder on top and it showed 32.4 mpg. That's not hand calculations I know, but I can tell you in that 1080 miles I saved $226 and change from driving my 2500 ram hemi. That's in one week, as its a business use car it's a normal week. So if I'm going to average $800 a month in gas savings, the Milage could be 20 mpg for all I care. I just wish I would have bought a Subaru years ago.

So, 2 trips from Nashville to Ohio and Back, and i've averaged 34.5mpg (hand calc) over 1800 miles. That's a bit under the EPA's 36mpg estimate, but certainly not low enough that I feel that the car should be rated at 30mpg highway like Steve suggests.

Actually it's not what I "suggest". It's what shakes out from professional drivers' results.

What speeds were you driving it? If you were above 65mph for sustained driving that will also put you well outside the test parameters used by the EPA to derive the 36mpg figure. Your mpg's are very similar to the real world (not spreadsheet) results other CVT drivers have been reporting, and far better than those reported by someone who drives his car at speeds over 75mph regularly... |

Using scientific deduction I already know that the speed was less than you are driving your car. My question about the speed is to see how much better they might have done (say, at 65mph cruise vs 70mph).
LOL, the EPA is certainly investigating your complaint, I bet we all get a huge settlement! |

Ah, the other part of the tag team. Between the two of you, you're a real wit.
Yes we have it in writing. Go to the Consumer Reports information listed in the first link of this thread, which is called the Impreza CVT MPG Problem. |

i have never seen in writing on the consumer reports website that the CVT impreza should be rated at 30mpg on the highway, do you have a link with the direct quote perhaps?

Was driving with cruise control set at the posted speed limit, so 55mph on the state routes between Columbus and Sandusky, 65mph on Ohio Interstates, and 70mph on Kentucky / Tennessee Interstates. Average MPH reported by the trip computer was in the 50-55 range.

So I'll ask again, someone at CR got 35mpg in a TL, so that means the Impreza only gets 30? |

With summer blend gas your drive probably would have yielded a couple of mpg more, and if you kept it at 65mph instead of the 70mph portion even better, but driving it in real world conditions gave you pretty good mileage! I hope nobody considering buying an impreza was convinced that getting 36mpg on the highway was impossible if you buy a CVT, but honestly I don't know many people that stupid, so I doubt many were dissuaded by the spreadsheet wunderkind . Because the numbers reported are pretty much exactly as I predicted, math and science, how did you ever get through engineering school without them? |

One can not accurately deduce the facts if the conclusion is predetermined. Look at the R&R conclusions regarding economics. They too, employ statistics (sic) - even the outliars.
Best MPG for the Impreza that I have experienced is on the the local highways where the speed is between 60/65 MPH. At times the MPG is greater than the 36 MPG rating by the EPA. Now for city/urban driving it's not so good and not so bad - mid to upper twenties, depending on who is driving the car. My son 25/26, me 28/30 depending on if I'm in a hurry and passenger load. Scientific Deduction, IMHO is the same as Data Interpolation which may or may not be the purported absolutes offered by statistical analysis (stats, damn'd stats, and lies - type of thing). |
