They seem to be pretty close for most normal people.

With the onset of warmer weather and putting the summer tires back on, I'm happy to say I have gotten a little over 33 on average on the last two tanks. Mostly going to work and back, (10 miles one way), with a few side trips thrown in. I would expect a drop when the AC starts getting used.

CVT MPG problem? What CVT MPG problem?
Put another 55 miles on after this, and the MPG's only dropped slightly to 35.7, primarily because I did about 15 miles of it on the Interstate and stomped on the gas a bit. This mileage represents primarily rolling hills on two lane roads, with some city driving mixed in with occasional stops. And I wasn't granny driving it either... |

No bubble to break. I know what your oft-touted Corolla can do, have owned two, and test drove a new one the same day I bought the Impreza. MPG be damned, they've turned into an even more blah car than they used to be. I get that you like the 'bonus' MPG you get out of yours... just not a tradeoff I'd be happy with for a real blah car. I'll keep the Impreza. If yours really bothers you that much, perhaps it's time to move on to something else. |

We all know your stance on this, other than recruiting people to your cause, why do you keep beating a dead horse? Apparently it's going to cost you an extra $5000 to drive this car per your math, then why do it ? Sell the gas guzzler and move on. Or pay an attny to sue for false advertising, whichever makes you happy. But dang, any other forum would have froze your acct after hijacking every thread.

It seems like your argument here hinges around Consumer Reports. Can you explain why I should expect to get 20% better than EPA in those cars without citing Consumer Reports?

EPA numbers are "for comparison purposes" only.
P.S. I don't "hijack every thread". I mostly only expose falsehoods. Last edited by stevehnm; 05-13-2013 at 01:41 AM. |

I stated I didn't compare numbers. I didn't have a desire to. I wanted what I wanted! Do you think I am lying about what I'm getting on my car? Why would I? It's my car, my gas, and my money. (33.0 average this tank.) On the highway with cruise set to keep the rpm's at 2 grand, I have gotten 36.5 on multiple occasions. (That is just over 65 BTW. 34.0 if I bump it up to 70.) MY car is delivering what I expected. This is hand calc with a GPS and gallons at the pump. Yours is not. Fine! That does not make me a liar any more than it makes you a liar. Yeah, I'm also aware that speed limits are higher in other parts of the country. I have logged somewhere between 150 and 200 thousand miles on two wheels traveling around this country. If you want to debate things knock yourself out. How about you stop the veiled personal attacks and start acting like an adult. You're acting like it is some kind of conspiracy to promote the car by those that are satisfied with it. You're not satisfied. I get that. You claim that on average the car is not living up to it's advertised numbers. I get that too, but like I said, mine is. MINE. <-NOTICE THAT WORD: MINE! As unhappy as you seem to be, you really need to get rid of the car so you can find something you will be happy with. Instead of making a federal case about it here, why don't you rent a billboard along the interstate somewhere so you can reach the potential new buyers before they make the fatal mistake of buying this AWD car with deplorable fuel economy. While you're at it, why don't you make your car a rolling billboard stating your displeasure. John |

To each his own. I prefer to be an educated consumer myself, which includes doing my part to hold manufacturers to their word. Stories from a half dozen people here who drive slowly enough to eek out good mpg mean nothing, when one could drive pretty much any car rated at 30 mpg EPA highway and get the same numbers. |

I get good mileage and drive the limit. Limit here is 60.kph for mains. Sides are 50 or 40. (I go 45 in the 40s) just a few minutes north the limit is 80. But most of my drive is 60.

Strange as this might sound, I do agree with you that the majority here are not achieving the numbers that expect, nor do I fault you for making an effort. However, for you to chastise others that are satisfied is uncalled for. It is as if you're advocating ME to complain to Subaru when I have nothing to complain about. It has also been mentioned here many times that the NASIOC collective represent a very small portion of Impreza owners overall. I think it is safe to say we can agree on that point. So, what brings us here? An interest in cars, trouble we might be trying to resolve, improvements we may want to make, and so on. There are many, many people who are not on any Subaru forum. Way more than there are here. Sales numbers prove that. I have two friends that I can think of right off the bat. Customer relations courses will teach that 10 unhappy people will tell others while 1 happy person will tell others. By that logic, there are many satisfied customers that no one ever hears from. Now, what do you define as "drive slow enough"? I generally drive the speed limit in town, known speed traps, and so on. On the open road, I usually run 5 over. Interstate, 5 to 7 over. Real heavy traffic, I go with the flow. Out in the middle of nowhere, well lets just say more, although that is usually on a motorcycle. Again I ask, just how fast should I be going? I really don't know what else to say. If we lived close enough, I would trade cars with you for a tankful and see if it is the car or the driver. That would be interesting to see the results. John |

So stories from a half dozen of us who are happy and can get close to the EPA numbers mean nothing, but the half dozen of you that bitch and complain incessantly do mean something? I don't follow that logic

John - I agree with you 100%. There are people out there who buy gold plated rifles because they like the way they look. I agree the Impreza is a good car (Subaru's in general are). I'm not criticizing everyone, just those who don't get that of course they can get the "EPA highway mpg" if they drive slowly enough - that's why I've posted up I've done better than 50 mpg. I was driving only about 40 mph on the flat though (two way run of course). "Slow enough" means to get the mpg they want without regard to their time value.
And I'll admit there might be some cars out there with CVT's that do much better than the typical ones. Myself, I'm looking to trade straight across for a 5MT though. |

So long...
I traded my 2012 Impreza a few weeks ago to get back into a truck. I had compromised the utility of having a truck vs outstanding fuel mileage with the Impreza. My year with the Impreza yielded 28.5 mpg (lifetime, computer) so 1-2 miles less if hand calculated. That is way off the mark when compared to the sticker. My results are only a couple of miles higher than my wife's '10 Outback which is heavier, has a bigger engine and is driven with no regard to fuel economy.
My new truck is rated at 15/20 mpg and after 3 fill ups my average is 20.8. This is driving the exact same route and manner in which I drove the Subaru. The Impreza was the only vehicle I ever owned where I couldn't routinely hit the high end of the fuel economy numbers. I would hope that the extent of the MPG threads here would give SOA something to think about. I wish everyone well and safe journeys with your Subys, Peace. |
