Default Stoked for E85 tune next week

How's it going everyone? I just thought I would share my excitement for my new tune next week. For those of you that don't know, my car is just a basic stage 2 opensource tuned car on pump 91 and 18psi. It ran a best of 13.2 at 102 IIRC. I was dissapointed, and decided that a little increase in power would be nice. So I talked to my tuner about E85, and placed an order . I got A tial 38mm EWG/up-pipe combo, a Grimmspeed 3 port EBCS and a set of KW variant 1 coilovers because my struts are clunking and it's driving me nuts (all from Import Image Racing). Plan is to install those mods, do a new timing belt, 1000cc injectors and get it tuned by Phuong @ WingzPerformance on 22psi of boost. I hope that going from stage 2 pump to E85 will be more noticiable than going from stock to stage 2, because I wasn't all that impressed with my Stage 2 car. Hoping to trap 110, but I will find out this saturday at the track, I'll keep yall posted. Cheers

I love ethanol.... used to run 17psi with ping on 91. Switched to e85 and 75lbs injectors and cranked up pressure to 22. Kind of wanna try 27 and see what it does once the car runs again

Too bad e85 stations are so far and few between.

E85 used to be so much cheaper, then it went up in price.... not so sure about nowadays anymore

Good luck with the E85 tune. Gas stations are few and far between but with a little planning, it's not too bad. I also keep two 5 gallon gas cans in the garage just in case.

I agree, but there is one next to my work (across the street) and one a mile away from my house, that pretty much makes this a no brainer.

Yes....you also burn through it twice as fast. At least I did when I ran my E85 map. Granted I am modded about twice as much as the OP.
So I guess do the math...see which fuel actually "takes you further."

We can, however...be honest about one thing, well maybe two...We don't buy these cars for MPG efficiency, and we also don't get tuned on E85 to improve MPG. It's strictly for performance.

It's just silly when people state how E85 is cheaper than 91 , yet it really isn't in the big picture since you generally burn through it about 40% faster.

Don't get me wrong. I will probably be going back to it as soon as my new motor is finished being broken in. It's been driven three times in the past month, so I am not worried about constantly finding a station. I am pissed the Cave Creek/Union Hills location closed though, now I have to drive 10 miles further for the closest station, which is a 70 mile round trip for me now.

Offer wasn't aimed at me. But I'd take you up on that just to feel the ride of the coilovers. It's on my list of possible next things. PS on my fairly stock stage 2 E85 added almost 100ft lbs of torque. Difference was huge... when temp is lower than 75deg. Not so nice now we are tickling the 100s.

So you are about 29% less on highway, so around town (and when getting on it). You are most likely close to that 40%

If you're worried about how much more fuel you're gonna use, E85 isn't for you. You're going to use waaay more cause you're foot is going to be planted to the floor. It cost me more at the pump than my 91 tune does and I don't care. I'm never switching back.

I'm running a Walbro 255, ID1000cc injectors, stage 2+ at 23 pounds. I'm making 349whp & 417wtq. I got 80wtq just from the E85 tune.

Oh, and I carry 10 extra gallons in my trunk at all times.

Good luck.

Just a 'lil update for y'all. The EWG didn't get here till yesterday and things came up. I was supposed to drop the car off this morning to get the timing belt done, but I forgot today is sunday and the tech at power Subaru that was going to do it is off today, and Pat is the only tech that my tuner recommended to get it done. Hopefully I can get ahold of Phuong to get the tune done, I'm really disappointed I couldn't get it done as planned because I took work off this weekend to be able to hit the track.

Agreed on the temperature thing. These cars are DOGS with the a/c on sitting at a light, and then getting on it. Stupid TMIC. I'm tempted to go FMIC just to prevent the gnarly heatsoak I get; It feels like a stock WRX when that happens! And I won't be installing the coilovers until I get another weekend day off, I just can't afford to not have my DD down for a day or two and get rides to work. How was the seat of the pants impression? I've heard people say that it feels like a totally different animal going from stg 2 pump to e85. Like I said in the previous post, I was disappointed when going from stock to stage 2, it didn't feel like it did all that much.

Huge gain. When I went stage two it may have sounded faster but didn't feel significantly faster. Not so with the change to E85. It's the torque you'll notice it comes in hard at 3000 revs. The car feels so much better, plus I love the smell. If you do it now you may be disappointed because of the temp. When I did it few months ago it was cooler and the difference was dramatic.

Got the car back yesterday. What a hiatus that was. I picked the car up and on the drive home, it felt SLOWER than the pump gas tune. Was only getting 14 psi on the boost gauge. WTF!? Looked around under the hood, and what do you know, the TMIC to Throttle body intercooler pipe was disconnected. Cleaned it off (had oil in it) and re-installed it with hair spray and let it sit. Drove around for a while, with a huge grin on my face I might add, only to have the car throw a CEL. Great.
I plug in my scanner and read the code. PO457. Must have been a line that fell off. Pop the hood and it's the line that runs from the BPV to that black thingy that was disconnected. Re-installed it, and ziptied ALL of the lines, including the one that is next to the alternator (t-fitting) that is a huge PITA to get to lol. Now it runs fantastic, no codes so far. And to Crofty, I was not disappointed at all, it still maxes out the factory lammco boost gauge even in this 100 degree weather with the A/C on and she just flat out ****s and Gets! I'm no expert, but this car has at the very least a 110 trap in it, even in this 100 degree weather.

I dont know if it was the TMIC or the motor having low compression, but my track times were not good. I did 5 runs. 1st run was a 13.7 @ 104.5 with a 2.2 60ft, I bogged the launch. 2nd and 3rd were both 13.4's at 103, 4th was a 13.2 with a 1.74 60 ft, no trap speed. Last run I Iced down the intercooler for 15 minutes. Still only ran a 13.19 (no friggin trap again!) with a 1.81 60 Ft. And then on the way home, my car throws 2 codes: PO171 and PO457. Last night was a horrible night to say the least. I'm almost at the point where I want to sell the car. Either way, I see losing another 5+ thousand dollars in the near future. If I sell it now, I'm going to loose my ass considering all I've put into it. If I keep it, It's just going to have more stupid problems. I'm going to compression test the car, and if It gets at least 150psi in all cylinders, it's going on craigslist. If not, I'm pretty much forced to build the motor, I'm not selling it with a hurt engine.

Yet another update. I dropped the car off with Phuong yesterday because I need these issues resolved. Upon getting my car back the first time, there were a few things I noticed on the car that seemed "unprofessionsal", however; Phuong apoligized and offered to fix the problems for free, as well as finish up the gauge install and figure out why it's throwing codes. He even went as far as letting me drive his 2g talon Daily Driver back and forth to work for the next couple of days because I don't have mine.

He did a boost leak test and found a few leaks, he also dialed in the Fuel trims and fixed the driveability issues the car was having. I sure hope the leaks are what caused my trap speed to be so low (104 in an E85 stage 2 car with an EWG on 23psi?). I'm going crazy driving this bone stock automatic talon LOL.

This sounds very familiar from when Phuong had worked on my car doing an E85 tune. I also had to go back to him to have him fix my tune, not to mention the several emails he sent with a tweaked tune. Similar codes, and similar issues with work not being completely done (hoses falling off, not hitting peak boost, etc). Two months pass by, and guess what...my motor went BOOM. Coincidence due to tune? Maybe...But I was pushing over 400 to the wheels for a good amount of time. One will never know the true cause for me snapping a rod in half.

I don't doubt his intelligence and tuning capabilities, however we all know his cream of the crop lies with EVO's and not the Subaru platform.
