thanks a ton, but what does "Neutral Position Switch Circuit Malfunction (M/T)" mean? does anyone know? and once again, should i be worried? it drives fine, not even a change in idle or anything

there wouldn't be a change in idle or engine performance because its a p1 code which for subaru's seems to mean that its got to do with 1. the powertrain or 2. the circuitry or 3. both and thus not an emission related problem.

SO, what you've got is a problem with the with the neutral safety switch on your M/T (Manual Transmission). most likely, replacing the switch will turn off your CEL. I wouldn't worry too much about it. that part failing is usually only a problem on A/T so my advice, would be not to worry about it, and once you can get to a shop, have them replace the switch, clear the code etc. and then see if it solves the problem. all that switch does is tell the computer to kill ignition if the car is in neutral. wiring problems can be cat and mouse games so hopefully replacing the switch solves your problem. good luck!!

also, does the car start in neutral? does the CEL go off if you start the car in 1st? do you have a manual transmission? more info!!

the car starts just fine, it is a manual, and the engine light stays on after i start it. i just had the guys who scanned it reset the light, but they diddnt know what that code was, cuz they r stupid. it stays on in neutral with the light on too, so im clueles, but as soon as i can i will take itto a reputable shop to get it properly diagnosed. thanks for the info tho

Try to start the car (out of gear, of course) without pushing the clutch in. I think that was the question kpatler was asking. Have a look at the switch down there on the clutch pedal anyway....it may be stuck closed or otherwise messed up.
