"WHAT UP DAWG?"
That's the first thing that I would hear walking into the sojax bay as Will is working on the days work. I wish that I had got the chance to know him sooner, but I first started hanging out with him about 6 months ago. His knowledge of subarus and F-14's was rediculous. You would think he used to be in the navy and worked on them with as much stuff he knew about them. My first experience with will was right after i got off deployment about 6 months ago and brought my 2000 RS into the dealership to see what was up with my ABS light randomly coming on and going off. I asked Will and he said "It has a loose ground DAWG" then followed me out to my car with his handy dandy power tool and tightened down a random bolt then proceeded to tell me it was whatever amount of money it was for 1hr of tech time then laughed. I turned my car on and it was gone and never came back. From then on I liked him. Everytime that I would go to the dealership (which was pretty often) I would always stop for a while and watch him work and shoot the ****...all while he was jamming out to the same 20ish song line up up Deadmau5/random techno songs. He has helped me on my RS as well as my Saabaru and I will miss the times hanging out at Ale House with him and some other people our convos about random military aircraft, him teching me things about subarus, and his friendly glare that he gave you when he saw you for the first time that day! RIP DAWG! I MISS YOU!

I'm really sorry to hear this. Very chipper guy, and like most of you, I was absolutely amazed at what he could do with those old Subarus.
I did not know him as well as most of you, but I hope everyone finds peace with it soon. |

I knew Will first as another member on NASIOC and later met him in person and immediately was struck by his knowledge of Subaru vehicles and later by his generosity and friendship. Will always answered my questions and provided insight when a Subaru issue had me stuck, he was an asset as a technician and an asset as a friend. We had been talking recently almost weekly about his desire to make some changes due to some issues he was having, none of which ever sounded so dire as to raise any concern. I was going to call him this past Monday night to touch base on those changes but got busy...I didn't get a chance to call until Tuesday morning.
Sadly, that call was too late. He is greatly missed. |

Damn I just heard about this, I didn't know him all that well but he certainly sticks out in my mind and he was always helpful with any questions regarding fixing cars. And from what I could tell he came across as stand up guy and exceedingly bright. It is most definately a sad day here in Atl, he will be missed.

I tried to type a post but it seems I can't express my thoughts...
so i'll just leave it at this: Will you ARE a great person, always helpfull, unbelievably knowledgable, generous and an interesting character. Wasting time at SoJax, with your techno/electronic music blasting is something I will always remember. Sincerly, "the XT kid" and my favorite "newb" oh, and this: is the face i'd always get while asking EA82 questions. |

I have so many happy memories of Will in the garage of our old house, and his staying so calm and amused through the crazy adventures with our overly religious grass-killing neighbors. Sitting down to dinner after he spent the day in the garage with Steven and talking about life, and kidding around at autocrosses, and all the times he'd come to visit after moving to Atlanta and then Florida.
Will, I will always remember you with love and with so much laughter, friendship, long conversations and happy days. Thank you for so many years of feeling like part of the family. |

Hey guys I never get to this area of the forum but I heard about this elsewhere:
I'm from PA and I'll make my long story short. I met Will a bunch of years ago in Concord NC. I frequent and am a mod over at USMB and I knew he had this legandary RX hatch I had to see. I sent him a PM on there and said I would be at blah blah blah motel at about whatever time and if he had a few I would love to see his car. He asked what room and I said I didn't know and he said "don't worry you will hear me" and he asked what I would be driving. Well he showed up as he said he would and we had one of the best conversations about Subarus and auto-x I have ever had in my life. What a smart and sharp guy he is. Anyhow we talked for easily 2 hours and then he left. A few min later my then wife's ex-husband showed up to drop off her kid and he was sporting this newish Neon that he likes to Auto-x. I said do you know the guy with the white RX? He was just here. The ex chuckled a little and said "yeah I know him and man can that MoFo auto-x." To this day WJM is one of the few I have ever met that took the effort to come out to a location I was at to meet one on one. I really respect him for that! RIP Sir. I hope Heaven has some great twisties for you to have fun with! |

I just happened to drop into the SE forum on a lark this morning and saw the sticky. I really couldn't think of anything to say through the frustration.
Will was a fixture both online and at the many events I attended in NC. He taught me how to properly launch a Subaru (no broken trannies yet!). He gave me some excellent advice about appropriate camber in ST. He gave me some fun course rides in his RX, some fond memories of him trying to decide whether hi or lo range was best for the cramped, technical courses at the WNC Ag Center and the hilarious bickering back and forth between he and Steven regarding the proper place for an ABS fuse in a ST 2.5RS (in the socket or out?). I think one of the reasons Will was so well known is that he didn't let shyness or social awkwardness dictate his enthusiasm... like it does for someone like me... he talked to and shared with everyone as if they were a potential good friend without being pushy or preachy or a braggart. For those of you feeling regret over not seeing the warning signs or not keeping in touch... please understand that depression isn't a mood swing.. it isn't a bad day... it's a form of mental illness. What Will did doesn't mean he didn't appreciate his friends and family. Depression causes people to hide or downplay their symptoms in an effort to act normal. It's not your fault... and he never would have done it if the part of his brain that knew so many people loved, admired and cherished him (which he obviously knew very well) hadn't been clouded by illness at the time. Will
When Bill, aka Scooby South told me "Will" was coming down
to jax to be one of the mainline mechanics I was curious. So I see this wall of a tool box and was immediately envious of the "Great Wall of Subaru"..of course it was blue. had a boom box, enough storage, associated work tables, welder, service cart and of course Will with his fro.. I was impressed. And those of you that know me, I am not easily impressed. I would confer with Will when I was pondering a technical problem that wanted a second opinion on. When I would visit Sojax for my weekly grocery (parts) run the first place I would swing by Will "Great Wall of Subaru"..whats up Dude.. SOSDD was my reply.. Even asked him to go into business together a few months back before I accepted my current gig. I would have loved to work with him doing thing I love to do.. work/tune/talk on our favorite topic/subject...subarus.. I miss him from halfway around the world.. please advise when the WJM dragon event is schedule.. I will fly halfway around the world to pay my respects and to be with "my/our family" as we remember our brother. Fight the good fight and take the higher path. Damn it Will..you're making my eyes leak.. where's the fuji-bond?.. Ben Yang aka jaxscuby |

For those of you who don't know me I was Will's wife. We were together for 5 years and though we divorced last summer we never stopped loving each other and remained very much a part of each others' lives. We were each other's best friend. I still feel as though I have lost my husband. We have a 4 year old daughter together, Charlotte Anne Maham (CAM, CAMshaft) who is coping well but misses her daddy very much.
Thank you all for your kind words and memories. RIP Will....I love you ~Ash25 |

Will and I weren't as close as most of you were with him, but he was one of the nicest, most honest, and helpful people I've met as part of this Subaru family. He help me and my family greatly and I wish I'd been able to do more to help him. I always went by to say hi to him when I was in the area. He was always elbows deep in a broken Subaru, but took time to stop and talk. I drove by the dealership today and couldn't bring myself to stop. I miss him and get choked up everytime I think about him. RIP.

For all of us who loved Will, I have no doubt that any and everyone here would have gone to the moon and back to bring him back to us had we had any idea. Everyone here loved him so much and will always miss him. But that terrible weight becomes so isolating. You just don't want to worry or upset anyone. What little energy you can find goes into reassuring everyone you're fine, because you love the people who care about you, too, as best you can through that terrible sense of sinking. I guess it's like trying to navigate in a stifling fog, and putting all the energy you can find into just trying to stay afloat, and stay above the surface. The people who start to see that become the people you work hardest to reassure that everything is fine. I don't know how it is that some people are able to come back from that, but I know that the love and friendship of a community like that make more of a difference than anyone knows. Maybe it can't always be enough. Maybe when things become overwhelming past a point no one can know, nothing could be enough. All of us were so lucky and blessed to know Will, and to share friendship, support, crazy days and the best of times and sometimes bad and difficult times with him. I wish with all my heart that all of that love and friendship could have been enough and could have helped. I hope we'll always find a way to keep that friendship and warmth alive in sharing it with each other, and with the people in our lives we love. |

Wow, just wow. I just figured something was up from Mr. Winn's G+ post of pics.
Let's see, first time meeting Will. It was a convoy across the Skyway during our first Dragon trip. We were following the group with Matt and Becky, Snowman, Opie and his wife and Will's wagon was leaking vital fluids on the side of the road. What followed would be a class in alternative engineering as Snowman and Will fixed the problem and we all chipped in on the water. If I'm not mistaken this was also the same trip a certain green svx hit a rock. Like all things Will, my memories of him involve either hair or leaking radiator fluid or the white Russians consumed at the Subaru Challenge in NC. My thoughts go out to Ashley and the whole Will family. Jeff |

I just heard the sad news from Cam (Aspen_2.5RS).
I first met Will at TopSpeed when I took the infamous green 95 wagon (turdburglar) down for a tune. He let me borrow some of his tools to swap the turbo in the shop that day and quickly became my go to "Subaru Tech Support" as someone mentioned earlier. I sent him countless annoying questions through AIM (WJMRallye I believe) about many of the problems I had as a shade tree mechanic working on these cars we love. A few years later I had bought a car that had been worked on at SOG. Not long after I got it the clutch and flywheel came off the crank because of unsecured flywheel bolts. I put the flywheel and clutch back on but it was suddenly running horribly. I had been on the phone with Will trying to diagnose what was going on when he said he would be passing through Greenville and could stop by my house and take a look. He and Ashley took time out of their trip so Will could check the timing on my car. Of course he was right, and the tech had also forgotten to put the timing belt stay back on the car. Based on Will's investigating and his relationship with former coworkers at SOG, I was able to ship my car to them and have it repaired free of charge. All he asked for in return for his labor and expertise was for my wife and I to take he and Ashley out to dinner at O'Charley's. We unfortunately couldn't make our schedules work that day and I gave him some cash instead. That was the last time I saw Will. It's too bad we didn't get to have that dinner together. I will be praying for comfort during this hard time for you and Charlotte, Ashley. Tell her that her Daddy left a legacy of loving and helping people, the proof is here. -Drew |
