Default Carbing front underpanel

***UPDATED -- ADDED PICS 8/14/2008***

The Carbing front undercover is a nice addition to the car.

It provides full coverage rearward because it extends beyond the rear of the jacking plate, and out on the rear sides. The plastic undercover only goes to the front of the jacking plate and about 2/3 of the way back, the side coverage is reduced and exposes part of the underside.

It also has an access panel that can be removed to access the jacking plate, without removing the entire panel itself.

This undercover also seems to have cut down a bit on the road noise as well, probably because it provides more coverage.

*********

The Carbing front undercover it is a direct fit on 2002-2005 models.

For 2006-2007 models, you need to "modify" the way the rear bracket is mounted.

In either of the above applications, this should be a no-more-than 30-minute install.

*********
On 2006-2007 models, the jacking plate was revised. The jacking plate has a lip on it. This lip effectively prevents mounting the Carbing bracket flush against it.

Your solution is to get two (2) stainless steel bolts (either regular cap bolts or allen style bolts) 8Mx30, and at least fourteen (14) extra stainless steel 8M washers.

Put the supplied washers on each new bolt. Put the bolts through the rear mounting bracket and then, while holding the bolts in place, install 6 to 7 washers over each bolt, and then hand install. The extra washers act as a shim between the rear bracket and the jacking plate. You're trying to clear the lip on the jacking plate, so you can either add or remove washers as needed.

Once you've set the shim height correctly, lightly snug each bolt just enough so you can slide the bracket either forward or rearward. Then dry test mount the underpanel.

You want to make sure the underpanel lines up correctly where the bolt holes in the panel are centered over the mounting holes in the subframe and rear mounting bracket.

NOTE: the front splash-shields may get caught under the front lip edge of the Carbing underpanel. You can either push either side out of the way or do a little trimming -- I chose to push them forward and leave them.

Once satisfied with the position of the underpanel, remove it and then torque the rear mounting bracket bolts to no more than 30Nm.

NOTE: the torque specifications for the factory jacking plate on the 2006-2007 models is WRONG. The factory four nuts (two on either side) and the four bolts (two forward and two rearward) show the specs incorrectly in the factory manual -- they are reversed.

The sideward nuts are torqued to 70Nm and the frontward/rearward bolts are torqued to 30Nm. It is shown the opposite way in the factory manual -- trust me, I know.

*********

When tightening the Carbing underpanel, you can torque the bolts, but be careful.

*********

Up front, you may want to get an extra 8Mx20 bolt -- of the three supplied, the center one is too long and will bottom out on the 2006-2007 models, and may do so on the 2002-2005 models.

Torque the front three bolts (if mounting to the factory sub-frame) to no more than 14Nm.

(I also used a stainless steel washer between the Carbing underpanel and the subframe to shim it so that the underpanel, made from aluminum, is not sitting against the subframe, made from steel, to avoid the potential for galvanic reaction to take place.)

The three rear supplied bolts are used to mount the underpanel to the rear mounting bracket you previously installed. I would torque them to no more than 8Nm (10Nm maximum).

*********

Happy Motoring!

My camera was damaged and so I will try and borrow one for now.

I'll take pics of both the factory and Carbing undercover for comparison, the rear bracket, showing the lip on the factory jacking plate and a pic of it installed.

Give me until the weekend to do so.

Thanks.

Back from the dead.

You have to remove the underpanel to change the oil.

Here's the jacking plate with the Carbing mounting plate attached. See the lip on the edge of the jacking plate (2006/2007). You have to use washers to shim the plate. On the 2002-2005, there is no lip. If you install the Carbing subframe, you have to grind down the lip for a center flange on the subframe to mount upto the plate.

The front bolts that mount the undercover to either the factory subframe or the Carbing subframe should be torqued to a maximum of 14Nm and the rear bolts that mount the undercover to the Carbing mounting plate should be torqued to a maximum of 8Nm.

I also got some oversized stainless steel fender washers for the bolts that mount the underpanel to the subframe and I used allen type head stainless steel bolts for both the rear bracket and the front undercover bolts.

Here's a side-by-side shot of the factory underpanel and the Carbing underpanel:

Here's a pic of the Carbing subframe. This piece really stiffens up the chassis and shaves 10 lbs off the front:

See the tabs hanging down toward the front on either side. Those are there if you want to retain your factory plastic underpanel and not spend the $200 or so on the Carbing underpanel.

Wow, that under panel covers a WHOLE LOT MORE area under the car vs the factory under panel.
