Transmission still slips from 2nd to third AFTER rebuild, reflash and new valve body
Hi, I'm looking for some advice on a rather odd issue. I just had my 05 Impreza 4EAT automatic transmission rebuilt, plus I had to install a new valve body due to faulty solenoids, plus I had the Subaru Service Bulletin 16-72-07 Automatic Transmission Learning Control Procedure (which needs to be done after transmission is disassembled or when the valve body is replaced, among other conditions) done. All this was done to fix a 2nd to 3rd gear slip that happens mostly under hard acceleration.
I talked to my car mechanic, and he says that having done all work mentioned above, he suspects a wrong application of the learning procedure re the Service Bulletin I mentioned above, or possibly a faulty transmission control module that is not accepting the learning procedure. Should I try doing the learning procedure again, drive the car for a few days to see if it somehow adapts to all the new parts and finally stops doing the gear slip, or take it back to the shop (which is what I intend at the moment)? Thanks for any advice given!!!!

Verify that you at least have dexron 3 compatible fluid. Subaru HP is the best ATF for the 4eat. The wrong fluid can cause slipping and weird shifting. Your could have other problems, but it is worth the check.

Hoon, thanks for your reply and your suggestion. I do have to check out which fluid was used after the rebuild. But, it seems it's the only issue, as I just found out today that the TCM reflash done last Monday was NOT the one required by Subaru in their Service Bulletin 16-72-07, which specifically calls for an automatic transmission learning control as noted in my original post.
What my local Subaru did was indeed a reflash under Service Bulletin 16-69-07, which applies for 4-3 and 3-2 downshift shock for temperatures 32 F or below. I live in a tropical island which NEVER sees such a low temperature, but they assumed it was needed anyway. This happened even after I handed them a copy of the correct Bulletin for them to work on my car. So, in a few days I'll take my car back to the dealer, fight about the whole thing, and ask for the correct procedure. Wish me luck and patience!!! |

So, update time. Last Saturday I had the service bulletin correct procedure done, and my car's transmission is still slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear. But it now does it mostly under heavy acceleration or going up an inclined road.
Subaru's transmission tech told me after testing but before doing the learning procedure that to him it seemed most likely to be a mechanical issue. Need of further adjustment of the new transmission parts possibly. Or another probable cause he mentioned was electrical. Bad wiring from/to the solenoids to the TCM among others. So, back to the shop in a few days to determine what's the real issue. At the the back wheels hop/noise is fixed, which was caused by one of the solenoids. |

So, update time! My car still has the transmission slippage issue, and just today I filed a complaint at my local (Puerto Rico) Consumer Affairs office to see what can be done.
In the meantime, I have tried to determine if indeed the issue is caused by either the accelerator pedal position sensor, the transmission control module, or other electrical part, even thought the scanner has never detected any service codes, even for the faulty solenoids. I will try to locate a good local car computer shop that can maybe test these items. If any of you has any insight as to what may be causing this, your advice and knowledge is most welcome. Thanks!!! |

Bumping this, first inspection meeting with the Consumer Affairs representative, the car mechanic, and a lawyer (!) representing the local Subaru distributor. In short, the car showed the same transmission issue in two test rides with all parts riding the car, some new information surfaced up about the possible (non-mechanical) causes of the problem, and soon the local Subaru dealer will re-perform the learning procedure, apparently with SOA techs on board via Internet.
So, the saga continues... |

Bumping again to update after 2nd Consumer Affairs inspection, this time with the local Subaru distributor head mechanic and the guy who worked on my car's transmission.
This time the automatic transmission learning control procedure was PROPERLY performed, taking literally less than 3-4 minutes. The last time Subaru techs supposedly did it, they took some 4 hours (!!!!). As per my request yesterday to perform it again, the Subaru techs looked like they did not know what I was talking about, much less how or where to look in the Subaru computer program to actually do it. I gave them the instructions on how to do it (Googled it beforehand), and then they finally did it. The result was mixed. The TCM seems to be ok, as the procedure was successfully done, and the car showed having the latest version of the software. No codes showed up that could help in determining other probable cause if present. So it seems the problem might be finally mechanical. The Subaru head mechanic told us of two cases where they worked on cars with transmission problems that were corrected only after replacing the transmission case. They seemed to have a small crack or blemish or whatever that impaired proper function. This is the next step on my car's ordeal, to make sure if it's the cause. Has anyone heard or experienced such transmission case issues? Any feedback is welcome. Thanks! |

So, bumping with latest developments...
Car is back today at the shop to double- and triple check for the cause of the malfunction. Before taking it in I had all electrical components checked independently (2-day test), and every parameter checks out ok, except when the slippage occurs. I guess/ hope that by Friday at the latest I will have news on what's gonna happen. After that, if nothing is found at fault, or if the case is indeed damaged or cracked, it's my call, depending on what Consumer Affairs suggests me to do. This is more like a diary than an actual forum post lol, but I want others to benefit from my experience. Wish me luck!!!! |

So, update time! After the longest wait, the car was checked, no problems were found, no tranny case damage was found... back to square one!
I decided to take my car to another local tuner, which works with Subies and FR-Ss among other cars (370Zs, Nissan GT-Rs, Evos, M3s, etc.), and the newfound culprit are the pistons. None of the previously checked or replaced parts were the cause. Parts will be ordered in the coming days, and I hope I FINALLY can have my car, with an almost-new tranny, in two weeks or less. Fingers crossed! |

Yes, PISTON BONDED HIGH CLUTCH, LOW CLUTCH, LOW AND HIGH CLUTCH, those are the part names, 3 in total. Sorry for the caps!

Yes, slippage, but none of the other parts replaced so far were the cause, as the car still has the same problem. The shop that's working on it now told me that the pistons are worn and, as far as I understood, this is the cause of loss of pressure inside the transmission and the cause for the slippage. Clutches, valve body, torque converter, all checked fine after his inspection.
I'd like to read your opinions as to why this would seem unlikely, irrelevant, or otherwise not logical. Thanks! Last edited by Guatiao; 05-31-2014 at 12:49 AM. Reason: Grammar |

So, update time, this time with GREAT news! My cars is finally fixed!! After a 52-day stay at the new shop, it's finally repaired. It was tested for over a week, making sure everything was working in perfect order, letting everything adjust as it should, and yesterday I finally brought it home. The 45-50 minute drive home was uneventful, the transmission feels and works awesome, and the car is back in business.
BTW, the part numbers for the 3 pistons I mentioned before are: 31544-AA000, 31544-AA010 and 31643-AA180. It turns out apparently the previous shop did not replace them, or if they did they got the wrong ones and they delivered my car as fixed when it really wasn't. In the meantime, I had my Consumer Affairs hearing this week also, and I'll know in some 2 weeks the result of my claim (over $2k for parts, labor, and related expenses). Now, let's reeeeaaaaaally test this almost new transmission!!! |

Congratulations. I need to study up on these pistons. I will look up the part numbers, but I am pretty sure we call them solenoids in Tennessee.

Hoon Goon, thanks for your interest in this issue. I did see solenoids on the valve body, which was replaced by the first mechanic, but these pistons are different parts. I could send you pictures if interested.
A little local road testing today further assures me that things are working as they should. I plan on doing a longer trip during the week to see how the car behaves. |
